If a PC game hitches while preparing shaders, let its preparation finish and check the game’s official support guidance before changing caches or buying hardware. Shader or graphics-pipeline work performed just as a game needs it can cause a frame-time spike; preparing and caching that work ahead of time can reduce the chance of a hitch, but the game, engine, driver, or platform controls most of the effective fixes.
Why shader compilation can cause a stutter
A game uses shader programs to tell the GPU how to render materials and visual effects. The game or graphics driver may need to compile shader code for the graphics API and target GPU. It may also need to create a graphics pipeline state, which includes settings beyond the shader itself. If that work happens at the moment a new effect or scene is needed, it can delay rendering and show up as a brief freeze or frame-time spike.
Compilation can happen during launch or while playing. Microsoft describes preparing shaders ahead of time as a way to reduce just-in-time compilation during gameplay in its Direct3D 12 Advanced Shader Delivery overview. Epic’s technical explanation of shader stuttering and Unreal Engine’s approach also explains why pipeline-state combinations matter, not just shader code.
Not every hitch is shader-related. Asset streaming, CPU limits, or other game-specific performance problems can also cause interruptions. A stutter by itself does not identify its cause.

What to try first
- Let the game’s preparation complete. If the game displays a shader-compilation or preparation stage, avoid closing it or starting gameplay before it finishes. Preparing work before it is needed can reduce just-in-time compilation, though the result depends on what the game prepares.
- Compare a first visit with a later visit. Revisit the same area or activity and note whether the hitch recurs. A smoother repeat can be a clue that the game cached work after the first pass; it does not prove shader compilation was the cause.
- Check the affected game’s official support instructions. Follow directions for that specific game and graphics mode. For example, Epic’s Fortnite DirectX 12 troubleshooting article discusses repeated shader recompilation and a cache-clearing step for that case. It is not a universal instruction for other games.
- Broaden the diagnosis if the hitch persists. If the same stutter continues, treat it as a game-specific performance issue rather than assuming shader compilation or a particular hardware part is responsible. Use the game’s support guidance and investigate other possible causes.
Should you clear the shader cache?
Only do so when the affected game’s official troubleshooting recommends it for your symptoms. Caches preserve prepared work for later use; deleting one can mean that work must be compiled again. Epic’s Fortnite instructions describe cache clearing as a possible response to a specific recurring DirectX 12 recompilation problem, not routine PC maintenance.
Cache behavior and coverage vary by game, driver, and graphics configuration. Unreal Engine documents shader and pipeline-state caching as related but distinct systems; its FShaderPipelineCache API reference explains that saving pipeline-state information can allow precompilation on a later run. Its shader development documentation and guide to bundled PSO caches describe additional engine-level mechanisms. These are implementation details for developers, not a universal player-side cache recipe.

What to expect on the first run
A first launch, first area, or first match may still hitch while new shaders or pipeline states are prepared. Epic’s Fortnite support article specifically warns that the first match may remain stuttery in the DirectX 12 case it describes. Later runs may benefit from cached work, but whether they do depends on the game and graphics configuration; a repeated hitch does not by itself establish that a cache is broken.
Microsoft’s Advanced Shader Delivery is a platform capability intended to prepare shader data ahead of time and reduce on-device compilation. It is not a guarantee that every title, store, GPU, or PC configuration receives precompiled shaders.

When the usual steps do not help
If preparation completes but the same scene still hitches, use the game’s support channel or troubleshooting material and describe the exact game, graphics mode, and point where the interruption happens. The available documentation explains shader and pipeline caching, but does not provide a universal test that distinguishes shader compilation from asset streaming, CPU bottlenecks, or other frame-time problems. Avoid treating a cache wipe or component purchase as a diagnosis.
