RC chips are integrated resistor-capacitor networks: one package combines resistors and capacitors to provide termination or filtering. TT electronics’ RC series has five circuit configurations, labelled A through E, across six listed variants: RC4, RC6A, RC6B, RC6C, RC6D and RC6E. Which version fits depends on the circuit topology and electrical requirements—not just the number of channels.

What is an RC chip?

An RC chip is a resistor-capacitor (RC) network integrated into a single package. Instead of placing each resistor and capacitor separately, a designer can use the network for functions such as signal termination or EMI/RFI filtering. TT electronics describes its RC series as an integrated passive device solution and says a single chip can replace up to 16 discrete parts. That is a manufacturer-stated capability; the exact replacement count depends on the circuit and selected variant. (TT electronics RC series application note, issue 2)

The note shows five schematics, Circuit A through Circuit E, and lists six product variants. The five configurations therefore should not be confused with the six model names; the source does not establish a one-to-one mapping between each configuration and each variant.

What are the five RC chip configurations?

The five circuit configurations are the A, B, C, D and E schematics in the TT electronics application note. They represent different resistor-capacitor arrangements for termination and filtering. For a particular design, select by matching the required topology and values to the schematic and variant data, rather than assuming that a model suffix alone identifies a universal filter type.

How to choose a network for termination or EMI filtering

For AC line termination

The application note describes AC (RC) termination as a series resistor and capacitor placed at the load. Set the resistance to the transmission line’s characteristic impedance. Choose capacitance so that the RC time constant equals twice the signal propagation delay, as specified by the note. Too little capacitance can leave overshoot or undershoot; too much can increase power dissipation.

For EMI/RFI filtering

TT electronics discusses simple RC, RC Tee and RC Pi filters as first-order configurations, with a stated attenuation roll-off of −20 dB per decade. The note recommends placing RC6 networks close to the I/O port being filtered. A compact package cannot compensate for poor placement: the path between the network and the noisy or sensitive interface matters to the intended filtering.

Check the whole interface, not only the capacitance

Before choosing a model, compare the circuit topology, number of channels, resistance and capacitance values, signal bandwidth, source and load impedance, tolerances, power limits, package footprint and placement distance to the interface. Source and load impedance affect the filter transfer function; resistance and capacitance tolerances, as well as temperature coefficient, can shift its 3 dB point. Confirm that the chosen network’s behavior is acceptable in the actual circuit.

Can an RC chip replace discrete resistors and capacitors?

Yes, when the network’s internal connections and component values match the circuit you need. The integration can reduce board area, discrete placement work and the number of solder joints and PCB traces. It is not a drop-in substitute for arbitrary separate components: check the schematic, channel arrangement, electrical limits, signal response and footprint against the original design.

TT electronics claims 50% real-estate savings over discrete components and says one RC6B can replace 16 discrete components. These are manufacturer claims in its application note, not independent comparative test results; actual savings depend on the board layout and the circuit being replaced. The note also cites reduced trace inductance, simpler inventory and fewer routing problems as potential benefits.

Where RC networks are used

The application note identifies high-speed AC line termination, EMI/RFI filtering and enhanced parallel-port interfaces. Its example circuits include keypad, ECG, parallel-port, serial-port, SCART, keyboard/mouse and motor-control filtering. These are examples of application areas, not a guarantee that any RC variant is suitable for every device in those categories; match the circuit and signal requirements before using one.
