The Prescott Pentium 4 3.2 GHz and Pentium 4 Extreme Edition 3.4 GHz are different processors, not two versions distinguished only by a 200 MHz clock gap. The early 2004 Prescott model uses a 90 nm process, while the 3.4 GHz Extreme Edition uses Intel’s 0.13-micron design and adds 2 MB of L3 cache. Either CPU will work only if the motherboard supports its package, bus, and BIOS requirements; the name and clock speed alone cannot establish compatibility.

What are these Pentium 4 processors?

Intel’s February 2004 quick-reference guide lists 90 nm Pentium 4 models at 3.40, 3.20, 3.00, and 2.80 GHz, alongside a 0.13-micron Pentium 4 Extreme Edition at 3.40 GHz. The same guide lists the Pentium 4 550 at 3.40 GHz and Pentium 4 540 at 3.20 GHz in June 2004. These dates and model numbers help distinguish the early Prescott launch from later Pentium 4 products. Intel’s 2004 Pentium 4 quick-reference guide

“Prescott” identifies the 90 nm Pentium 4 generation. The P4 EE 3.4 GHz is the higher-end Extreme Edition, not simply a Prescott running at a slightly higher frequency. Intel described its Extreme Edition as aimed at high-end gamers and computing power users, and specified 2 MB of integrated L3 cache for the 775-land version. Intel’s Extreme Edition specification

How do the Prescott 3.2 GHz and P4 EE 3.4 GHz differ?

Feature Prescott Pentium 4 3.2 GHz Pentium 4 Extreme Edition 3.4 GHz
Process generation 90 nm Prescott, per Intel’s 2004 quick-reference guide 0.13 micron for the 3.40 GHz Extreme Edition listed in Intel’s 2004 guide
Clock speed 3.20 GHz 3.40 GHz
Package/socket Not established by the cited quick-reference entry; verify the exact CPU package and motherboard socket Intel’s cited specification describes a 775-land package; check the exact processor and board
System bus Not stated in the cited quick-reference entry Intel specifies an 800 MHz or 1066 MHz system bus across the 3.40 GHz and 3.46 GHz Extreme Edition versions; verify which bus applies to the exact CPU
Cache Cache hierarchy and capacities are not stated in the cited quick-reference entry 2 MB integrated L3 cache for the 775-land specification
Hyper-Threading Not stated in the cited quick-reference entry Supported, according to Intel’s specification for the 3.40 GHz and 3.46 GHz versions
Architecture Not stated in the cited quick-reference entry NetBurst, according to Intel’s specification

Intel’s Extreme Edition specification describes a 3.40 GHz and 3.46 GHz offering; its bus figures therefore apply across those variants, not necessarily to every 3.40 GHz chip regardless of package or model. The frequency comparison by itself says little about real-world performance: the available source material does not establish benchmark results for these specific processors.

Will one fit your motherboard?

Do not assume compatibility because both CPUs are Pentium 4s or because one has a higher clock speed. Intel’s cited Extreme Edition specification identifies a 775-land package, but the early Prescott listing does not establish the package for every 3.2 GHz part. A board must match the processor’s physical socket and support its electrical and firmware requirements.

  • Identify the exact processor. Record its full model designation and, if available, stepping. “Pentium 4 3.2 GHz” alone may not identify the package or board-support requirements.
  • Check the motherboard manual or CPU-support list. Confirm the processor is supported, including any required BIOS version. A matching socket does not guarantee BIOS recognition or operation.
  • Match the bus requirement. Verify that the board supports the exact processor’s front-side-bus rating. Intel lists 800 MHz or 1066 MHz buses for the specified 3.40 GHz and 3.46 GHz Extreme Edition variants.
  • Confirm cooling and power readiness. Use the motherboard and system documentation to check processor cooling and power requirements before installation; the cited sources do not establish a universal requirement for every board and CPU combination.

Intel’s later 775-land datasheet lists Pentium 4 6xx models from 3.00 through 3.80 GHz and documents Hyper-Threading and NetBurst for that family. That later family information does not prove support for a 3.2 GHz Prescott or 3.4 GHz Extreme Edition on a particular motherboard. Intel’s 775-land Pentium 4 datasheet

What to check before buying a replacement

  1. Look up the motherboard’s exact model and revision, then consult its CPU-support list for the specific processor and minimum BIOS version.
  2. Compare the board’s socket and supported bus with the exact chip’s package and bus rating. Do not buy based on “Pentium 4” or GHz alone.
  3. Ask for clear seller photographs showing the processor markings and inspect them against the board’s supported model information.
  4. Check the seller’s return policy, particularly if the board’s BIOS version or the processor’s exact stepping cannot be confirmed.
  5. Assess physical condition before installation. These are legacy processors; Intel maintains a product-discontinuance record for the Pentium 4 Extreme Edition 3.40 GHz with 800 MHz FSB. Intel’s discontinuance record

If a physical replacement is appropriate, “Pentium 4 3.2 GHz Prescott processor” is a useful search phrase, but it is not a substitute for verifying the exact model and compatibility. The Extreme Edition 3.4 GHz should likewise be treated as specialist or used inventory; current listings, availability, and prices are not established here.

Which one should you choose?

Choose the processor supported by your existing motherboard and BIOS, not the one with the more appealing clock number. The P4 EE has documented 2 MB L3 cache and Hyper-Threading in Intel’s 775-land specification, but that does not make it a drop-in upgrade for a Prescott system. If no trustworthy motherboard support information confirms the exact CPU, do not assume the swap will work.
