Prelonic Technologies OG, a startup formed in Linz, Austria, in 2007, built the prototype described in a 19 January 2009 EDN report. It screen-printed a flexible display, activation button and battery onto one thin PET-film substrate. The report described planned test products for greeting cards, gaming cards and marketing materials; it does not establish that the module became a widely available retail product.

How Prelonic’s display-battery module worked

The reported prototype brought three functional elements together on a single polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film: a flexible active display, a push-button to activate it and the battery needed to run it. Screen printing deposited the printed-electronics layers onto the film, which EDN described as thin as paper. The benefit of that approach is integration: a card or package could carry a simple display without a conventional rigid screen and separate battery assembly.

Screen printing does not mean that every component is an ordinary ink, or that the finished module can be made by a desktop printer. It is a manufacturing process for depositing functional materials in patterned layers. The resulting device still depends on the properties and arrangement of those materials, the substrate, power source and electronic design.

What Prelonic planned to make

In 2009, Prelonic CEO Friedrich Eibensteiner said the company intended to launch test products to explore applications and markets. He named marketing materials, greeting cards and gaming cards as possible uses, and said a five-stage roll-to-roll screen printer was intended to support anticipated production volumes. Those statements describe plans at the time, not confirmation that the products entered broad commercial production.

DGZZI 2PCS Single String Mini Lithium Battery Indicator Capacity Module 3.7 to 4.2V 4 Cell Charge Display Board
  • Product IC features built-in comparators and feedback loops to detect four voltage points. Through internal calibration technology, voltage detection accuracy is guaranteed within plus or minus1percent
  • Connect the positive and negative wires of the display board to the positive and negative terminals of the lithium battery. The digital display will show real-time battery level.
  • Features green, yellow, and red LED indicators to highlight battery status, enabling quick visual differentiation of charge levels.
  • Battery level display explanation: 5percent (3.4-3.55V) is red, 50percent (3.55-3.7V) is orange, 75percent (3.7-3.87V) and 100percent (3.87-4.2V) are green.
  • Note: This model is not waterproof. Electronic components should be used in dry environments.

Cards and packaging are a natural fit for a thin, flexible display-battery module: they can add a short visual interaction or information display to an otherwise passive printed item. The same general approach can be relevant to smart packaging and connected objects, provided the display, power source, electronics and use case are designed to work together.

How the concept developed after 2009

A related architecture appeared in a 2020 Evonik and Ynvisible technology demonstrator. It combined printable battery inks with an electrochromic display in shared modules, with intended applications including the Internet of Things. This demonstrates continued work on integrating printed power and displays, but it is not evidence that the later demonstrator was the same product as Prelonic’s prototype or that either became a mass-market module.

Printed displays are not all the same. Electrochromic and e-paper displays can suit low-power information that changes occasionally, while the choice of display technology affects appearance, power needs and interaction. For a real project, the useful comparison is between complete architectures and supplier capabilities, not just the claim that a display and battery are “printed.”

What current supplier specifications do—and do not—show

Ynvisible’s current product page describes printed e-paper display capabilities and gives example specifications: power use below 1 µW/cm², display thickness below 300 µm, a 10 mm radius flexibility specification, and a required battery capacity of 6 mAh for the referenced display configuration. These are supplier-stated figures for that configuration, not universal specifications for printed displays or for Prelonic’s 2009 module. Battery life also depends on the application and operating pattern; capacity alone does not determine runtime.

Current supplier information points toward custom components and industrial or business-to-business projects rather than a standard consumer product. Ynvisible offers printed-display capabilities, Evonik works on printable battery materials, and other companies describe prototyping, bespoke printed batteries or thin-film battery and sensor systems. A supplier’s capability page is not proof that a particular integrated module is stocked for retail sale.
