Parabola GNU/Linux-libre is an Arch-based, rolling-release distribution that prioritizes software freedom. It uses Arch-style package management while filtering out software that does not meet free-software criteria; its project installation images default to the Linux-libre kernel. That policy can mean some Wi-Fi adapters, graphics features, and other devices will not work if they require proprietary firmware or drivers.
What is Parabola GNU/Linux-libre?
The Free Software Foundation describes Parabola as “a distribution based on Arch that prioritizes simple package and system management.” In practice, it retains familiar Arch conventions, including the pacman package manager and a rolling update model, but applies a stricter software-freedom policy to its kernel and available packages.
GNU accepted Parabola as a completely free project on May 20, 2011, according to the project page’s account on LibrePlanet. LibrePlanet also describes Parabola as using the same Pacman package manager and rolling release schedule as Arch. It reports that about 800 packages were filtered for failing the Free Software Definition; that is an approximate figure reported on the page, not a verified current repository count.
How is Parabola different from Arch Linux?
| Area | Parabola | Arch Linux |
|---|---|---|
| Software policy | Filters packages and kernel components that do not meet its free-software requirements. | Offers a broader upstream ecosystem, including software and components that Parabola excludes. |
| Package management and updates | Uses pacman and a rolling-update model. | Uses pacman and a rolling-update model. |
| Hardware implications | Devices may be unsupported when they need proprietary firmware or drivers and no free replacement exists. | May offer access to proprietary drivers or firmware that Parabola excludes. |
| Installation and upkeep | Uses an Arch-like, hands-on installation and administration workflow. | Also expects users to handle installation and system administration. |
| Proprietary applications | Not a good fit for software that is unavailable under its free-software policy. | Its broader ecosystem may provide more options, subject to the software’s own licensing and availability. |
The central trade-off is policy versus compatibility: Parabola’s filtering aligns the system more closely with the GNU Free System Distribution Guidelines, but it can rule out hardware support that depends on nonfree code. The Free Software Foundation’s list of free GNU/Linux distributions describes Parabola’s freedom-oriented position; it does not establish that every device will work.

Will your Wi-Fi, graphics, and other hardware work?
There is no universal compatibility guarantee. A wireless adapter may require proprietary firmware; a graphics card may rely on a vendor driver or firmware for particular features; peripherals can have similar dependencies. Because Parabola filters those components, a device that works on another Linux distribution may not work fully on Parabola.
- Identify the exact model of your Wi-Fi adapter, GPU, and any essential peripherals.
- Check current Parabola documentation for supported free drivers and firmware before installing.
- Consider the functions you need, not only whether the device is detected: wireless networking, accelerated graphics, power management, or other features may have different support.
- If a required device or application depends on proprietary code and has no supported free alternative, choose a distribution that permits it.
Parabola’s project ISO build configuration sets linux-libre-vanilla as the default kernel. The Linux-libre approach removes proprietary firmware and other nonfree components from the kernel, which is the reason hardware checks matter before installation.

Is Parabola a rolling-release distribution?
Yes. Parabola follows a rolling-update model: the system is updated continuously rather than through occasional, fixed-version releases. The project summary on LibrePlanet describes this as giving users ongoing access to updated system software. Rolling release does not mean that every package is always the newest upstream version or that upgrades are risk-free; it means users maintain the installed system through continuing package updates.
Use pacman conventions and perform complete system upgrades rather than updating selected packages against stale package databases. Avoid partial upgrades, which can leave packages out of sync.

What should you expect when installing Parabola?
Installation is Arch-like and requires more hands-on setup than a guided desktop installer. The general workflow is to boot installation media, prepare storage and networking, install a kernel and the required userspace, then configure the boot process and user accounts. Exact image names and commands can change, so follow the current Parabola project documentation for installation instructions instead of assuming that Arch commands or images apply unchanged.
- Check hardware first. Confirm that free drivers and firmware are available for the machine’s essential devices.
- Boot the current Parabola installation media. Use the image and boot guidance specified by the project.
- Prepare storage and networking. Partition and mount storage, and establish network access using the methods supported by the live environment and your hardware.
- Install the system. Select the kernel and userspace packages required for your setup, then use the project-prescribed pacstrap- and pacman-style tools.
- Configure startup and accounts. Set up the boot process, users, and other system settings before restarting into the installation.
- Maintain it with complete upgrades. Use the project’s current package guidance and avoid partial upgrades.
The Arch installation guide can help explain the general workflow, but it is background rather than a substitute for Parabola’s instructions. ArchWiki notes that specific devices may need firmware and networking packages; Parabola users must verify that the required components meet its free-software policy.

Who should choose Parabola?
Parabola may suit you if
- You want a distribution that prioritizes free software and accepts the resulting restrictions.
- You are comfortable with Arch-style installation, package management, and ongoing administration.
- Your hardware works with available free drivers and firmware, or you are prepared to choose compatible hardware.
- You prefer a rolling system and can keep it updated carefully.
Another distribution may suit you better if
- You need a Wi-Fi adapter, GPU feature, vendor driver, DRM application, or proprietary codec with no free alternative supported by Parabola.
- You depend on proprietary software for work or everyday use.
- You want a more guided installation or do not want to manage a rolling system.
There is no single current compatibility list established here, and a current official release number or definitive architecture matrix should not be assumed. Verify both against Parabola’s current project documentation for the specific computer you plan to use.
