Start by writing down the exact error code and when the feature update fails—during download, restart, or installation. On Windows 11, run the Windows Update troubleshooter in Get Help first; if the problem remains, use the code to choose the next step rather than trying unrelated repairs.
Before advanced troubleshooting, back up personal files. Error codes point to possible causes, not a guaranteed diagnosis, and the right fix depends on the failure stage and your PC.
1. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

On Windows 11, open the Get Help app and run the Windows Update troubleshooter.

Let it complete its diagnostics and attempted fixes, then restart the PC and check for updates again. Microsoft describes the tool as an automated way to diagnose and address many update problems. See Microsoft’s Windows Update Troubleshooter instructions.

If the update still fails, record the displayed code and follow the relevant branch below. Microsoft’s broader Windows update troubleshooting guide includes code-specific steps; some navigation on that page is for Windows 10, so use the current Settings or Get Help route for your Windows version.
2. Match the error code to the likely problem
The causes below are possibilities listed by Microsoft, not certain diagnoses. Use the exact code shown by Windows and follow the linked Microsoft troubleshooting steps.

For the listed error codes and detailed instructions, use Microsoft’s Windows update troubleshooting guide. Avoid treating a code as proof of a single cause: for example, a driver-related code does not name the driver to change.
3. If the update is stuck or interrupted, check the basics

Confirm the PC has a working internet connection, especially if the failure happens during download or Windows reports an interrupted update.

Restart the PC, then check Windows Update again. This is also the recommended follow-up after the troubleshooter completes.

Check free storage if Windows reports a space problem or shows a Fix Issues prompt. Do not assume that every feature update needs the same amount.

4. Free space when storage is the obstacle
Microsoft says feature updates typically need 6–11 GB or more of free space, but the actual requirement varies with the update route, optional content installed on the PC, and other updates. As Microsoft puts it in “Free up space for Windows updates”, “The total free disk space your device requires to complete an update varies.” The Windows Update prompt is the best guide to your device’s specific need.
Review Windows’ Cleanup recommendations or Storage Sense and remove only files you recognize as safe to delete. If Windows offers Fix Issues, it may let you use external storage; Microsoft specifies at least 10 GB free for that workflow. External storage can help, but Windows may still require additional free space on the PC’s internal drive.

5. Choose a supported repair route if the update still will not install
Windows Update Assistant for a compatible PC
If Windows does not offer the feature update automatically, Microsoft’s Windows Update Assistant can manually install the latest feature update on compatible x86/64 PCs. It does not run on ARM-based PCs, so check your device architecture before using it.
Reinstall the current Windows 11 version to repair it
On supported Windows 11 installations, Fix problems using Windows Update reinstalls the current version of Windows and can repair system files and components. Look for it in Windows Update recovery options; it may not appear on managed devices or certain older installations. Windows 10 support status
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10.
