Reddit’s Data API—formerly called its public API—lets approved third-party software access and modify Reddit data programmatically. It powers services such as moderation bots, community utilities and apps, but access is conditional: developers must register, follow Reddit’s terms and policies, and obtain permission for commercial use. Reddit has announced a gradual shift toward its Developer Platform, with remaining public API access scheduled to end in March 2027.

What Reddit’s Data API lets developers do

Reddit describes the Data API as a way for approved developers to access and modify data programmatically, including to build automated moderation tools. In practice, that makes it possible for software outside Reddit’s own interface to support community work: a bot can automate a moderation task, while an app or utility can present or act on Reddit data in a different workflow. Reddit’s documentation calls the Data API the former public API. Reddit Help: Developer Platform & Accessing Reddit Data

This access is not an unrestricted right to collect or reuse anything visible on Reddit. Developers need to identify their apps accurately, register them, and comply with the applicable terms, policies and technical limits. Reddit’s Data API license is non-exclusive and revocable, and Reddit retains rights not expressly granted. Reddit Data API Terms

Why API rules matter to Reddit communities

Moderators and bot maintainers rely on integrations to handle repetitive work and provide community-specific features. A change in access can therefore affect more than a developer’s code: it may alter how a team removes spam, applies rules or uses a custom utility. Reddit itself has asked developers and moderators to identify which tools are mission-critical as it plans the transition to its Developer Platform. Reddit’s 2026 developer announcement

Moderation and community tools

Reddit’s June 2023 moderator-tooling page said API access was free for moderators and developers building non-commercial tools. It also said most moderation bots fit within the free OAuth limit then announced. That matters as historical context for the 2023 dispute, but it does not establish today’s universal limit or the price for a particular developer.

Accessibility apps

Reddit’s 2023 update said it had made exemptions from large-scale pricing terms available to some non-commercial accessibility apps. It named Luna, Dystopia and RedReader as having signed agreements by June 30, 2023. That is evidence that accessibility was recognized as a use case at the time, not a guarantee of a standing exemption for every accessibility app today. Reddit’s 2023 API update

What changed in the 2023 API debate

In 2023 Reddit updated its developer and Data API terms, replacing a patchwork of service-specific terms with a framework that clarified rights, restrictions, review and expectations for content use. Reddit said the Data API had previously been called the public API. Reddit’s 2023 API update

The dispute involved different cases that should not be collapsed into one price or limit. For moderators and developers building non-commercial tools, Reddit Help said in June 2023 that the free OAuth allowance would rise from 60 to 100 queries per minute effective July 1, 2023. Reddit also said fewer than 100 bots overall exceeded that updated free limit, and fewer than 20 of the thousands of moderation bots did. These are figures Reddit reported in 2023, not current rate-limit guidance. Reddit Help: Moderator Tooling

High-volume or commercial services were a separate concern. Reddit Help says commercial use requires permission first; its examples include monetized apps, advertising, subscriptions, paid research or data access, sponsorship, and publishing Reddit content on monetized sites. Eligibility depends on information provided in the app review process. The official materials cited here do not give a universal current commercial price or disclose every app’s negotiated terms, so developers should not infer a per-request price from the 2023 free-tier figures. What Reddit’s terms mean for data use

Users retain ownership of content they submit. The Data API terms allow developers to copy and display content only as needed to develop, deploy, distribute and run an app for its users, subject to restrictions imposed by the content’s rightsholders. Other uses—including training a machine-learning or AI model—require express permission from the relevant rightsholders. Public visibility is not blanket permission for unrelated reuse. Reddit Data API Terms

Reddit’s current “Don’t break the site” policy requires app registration and compliance with the Developer Terms, Data API Terms and Responsible Builder Policy. It prohibits unauthorized scraping, bypassing access limits or other guardrails, continuing to display removed or deleted content, presenting an app as if it were a human, and unsolicited automated outreach. Data API and Devvit are different routes

Reddit’s Developer Platform, including Devvit, offers a way to build interactive community experiences and moderation tools within Reddit. Its APIs support reads and writes involving community content, but Devvit does not expose specified private user data, including subscriptions, votes, saved posts, browsing history, private profile information, or follows and friends. Consideration Traditional Data API integration Developer Platform / Devvit
Access route Registered app using Reddit’s Data API and its applicable authentication and terms. Reddit’s in-platform developer environment for community experiences and tools.
Typical fit Third-party apps, bots, moderator utilities, research or commercial services, subject to review and permission rules. Interactive community apps and moderation tools built for Reddit’s platform.
Data scope Access governed by API terms and applicable permissions; user content remains subject to its owners’ rights. Community content can be read and written; specified private user information is not exposed.
Migration question Which existing functions depend on public API access, and what registration or review applies? Do the required capabilities exist, or are there gaps that affect the app or community?

These are not interchangeable interfaces with guaranteed feature parity. Reddit has not published a complete capability-by-capability migration map for every third-party app, so developers need to compare their actual requirements with current platform documentation and raise critical gaps with Reddit.

Reddit’s announced public API transition for 2026–27

In a 2026 developer announcement, Reddit said limited public API access would continue for a period while it gradually restricted new requests and moved third-party apps toward the Developer Platform. Reddit said broader changes would not happen immediately and described registration as a way to receive migration updates and support. Reddit’s 2026 developer announcement

A subsequent Reddit migration announcement set two announced milestones: access removal for apps and users that have not registered or engaged is to begin January 12, 2027, and remaining public API access is scheduled to end in March 2027. Reddit reported that more than 14,000 apps and bots had registered at the time of that announcement. These are planned dates and a publication-time count, not confirmation that the milestones have already occurred or that the count is permanent. Reddit’s migration announcement

How developers and moderators can prepare

  1. Register and keep app information accurate. Make sure the app is identified correctly and follows Reddit’s Developer Terms, Data API Terms and relevant policies.
  2. Review the use case. Determine whether the app is non-commercial or commercial, whether review or prior permission is required, and whether its data use is limited to operating the app for its users.
  3. Inventory community-critical functions. List the bot actions, moderation workflows and user-facing features that a community would lose if the integration stopped working.
  4. Compare requirements with Devvit. Check the current capabilities and data boundaries against the app’s real needs; document any missing function rather than assuming parity.
  5. Track migration updates and dates. Reddit’s transition milestones are announced plans, so registered developers should monitor Reddit’s current developer communications for changes and support details.

For moderators, the practical question is which tools are essential to keeping a community running. For developers, it is whether those features can be ported without breaching data-use rules or losing necessary capabilities.
