The 2015 Asus ZenBook UX305FA is a thin, fanless Windows laptop designed for quiet everyday computing, not sustained high performance. It pairs a lightweight aluminum chassis and a useful selection of ports with Intel’s low-power Core M processor. That makes it a good fit for writing, web browsing, office work and travel, but a less suitable choice for demanding workloads such as long video encodes or software builds.
Which UX305 configuration is this review about?
The documented US launch configuration was the ASUS ZenBook UX305FA-ASM1: Intel Core M-5Y10, 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD and a matte 1920×1080 display. ASUS listed it at a $699 MSRP at launch in 2015. The broader UX305 family also included an optional 13.3-inch IPS anti-glare QHD+ panel at 3200×1800; those family options should not be confused with the Full HD screen in the US ASM1 model. ASUS’s launch announcement and the US model listing describe the family and launch configuration.
How does the UX305 look and feel?
The UX305’s aluminum wedge chassis is slim and restrained, with a 12.3 mm profile and a weight of about 1.2 kg in ASUS’s 2015 announcement. Its low weight is useful for carrying between classes, meetings or trips, and the matte finish is practical in bright rooms because it reduces reflections compared with a glossy screen.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Fanless cooling is the defining design trade-off: in normal operation the computer runs silently, without a cooling fan. That quietness is particularly appealing for note-taking, reading or working in shared spaces. It also reflects the machine’s low-power design rather than a promise of workstation-level performance. Notebookcheck’s review describes the Core M system as fanless and notes its performance disadvantage against Haswell competitors.

How fast is the Core M UX305?
The Core M-5Y10 is a Broadwell-generation, low-power processor with two cores and four threads. For the everyday work this laptop targets—documents, browsing, email and video playback—it is a sensible match for the lightweight chassis. The limitation shows up when the processor must work hard for an extended period: encoding, compiling and demanding creative tasks take longer than on contemporaneous 15 W Core i5 Ultrabooks.
In short, the UX305 prioritizes portability and silence over sustained CPU speed. It is not a good choice if your regular workload depends on lengthy processor-intensive tasks; a Core i5-class laptop is the better comparison point for that use. Notebookcheck’s comparative assessment likewise finds the UX305’s performance trails Haswell competitors. Notebookcheck’s UX305FA review provides the comparative context.

How long does the battery last?
Battery estimates depend on the test conditions. ASUS advertised “up to 10 hours” in 2015, describing an office-productivity scenario with Wi-Fi connected, a Core M-5Y10, 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD and screen brightness set to 120 cd/m². That is a manufacturer claim for a specified configuration and controlled usage, not a guarantee for every UX305 model or workload. ASUS’s 2015 announcement gives the conditions.
Notebookcheck recorded about seven hours in its WLAN test on a UX305 with a 45 Wh battery. That independent result is a more useful practical reference for active wireless browsing, though actual runtime still varies with screen brightness, battery condition and workload. The difference from ASUS’s figure is understandable because the tests and usage conditions differ. Notebookcheck’s battery test reports the WLAN result.

Is the display good for work?
The US UX305FA-ASM1’s matte Full HD panel offers a practical balance for office work: 1920×1080 resolution on a 13.3-inch screen is sharp enough for text and web pages without the extra scaling demands of QHD+. The UX305 family also offered a matte IPS QHD+ option at 3200×1800, but panel choice depends on the exact configuration.
Image quality may vary by sample and calibration. Laptop Mag reported an overly yellow tint in its office photo test, so buyers should not assume every UX305 panel will look perfectly neutral out of the box. Laptop Mag’s UX305 review discusses its screen observations.

What ports and connections does it have?
AnandTech’s tested UX305 included three USB 3.0 ports, micro-HDMI, a headset jack and a microSD card reader, along with Wi-Fi. That is a useful selection for a slim laptop: USB accessories and removable storage can be connected directly, while micro-HDMI provides a wired display connection with the appropriate cable or adapter. The tested machine weighed 1.2 kg and had a 45 Wh battery. AnandTech’s review documents the ports and tested configuration.

The UX305 makes the most sense for someone who values a quiet, lightweight laptop for basic productivity and media use. Its Core M platform is now old, so a used unit’s condition matters as much as its original specifications. Before buying, check that the battery still holds a useful charge, the display is free of defects, the keyboard and ports work, and the machine includes a compatible charger. The available evidence here does not establish current replacement-battery or charger availability, so verify compatibility and stock with the seller or a repair provider.
Quick Recap
- Good fit: writing, office documents, web research, travel and quiet media playback.
- Consider another laptop: if you need sustained CPU speed for encoding, compiling or heavy creative work.
- Verify the exact listing: UX305 family configurations differ, especially in display resolution, memory and storage.
