Navigator is a wrapper for Google Apps Script’s UrlFetchApp that adds cookie handling, redirect support, logout detection, and optional re-login. It can also preserve cookies between script executions and provide helpers for extracting form fields and CSRF tokens. The published guide dates to 2017, however, and current maintenance and runtime compatibility are not established; inspect the library before relying on it in production.
What Navigator adds to UrlFetchApp
Google Apps Script’s UrlFetchApp makes HTTP requests, but applications that depend on authenticated sessions may need extra work to carry cookies, recognize expired sessions, and submit login or form data. Navigator wraps UrlFetchApp with methods and options intended to handle those tasks.
Its author, Janaka Bandara, described it as a wrapper that brings basic HTTP-client operations into convenient methods while addressing pain points in UrlFetchApp. The DZone article describing Navigator was published on December 4, 2017; an author-blog version appeared September 13, 2017, and a republication appeared September 18, 2017.
Navigator is not a guarantee that every website’s authentication flow will work. Login pages can require site-specific fields, tokens, or behavior, and the library’s current compatibility is unresolved.

How to install the Apps Script library
The published installation instructions identify this Apps Script project key:

Add the external library to the Apps Script project using that key, then inspect its source and available methods before using it. The author says the source can be inspected and customized through the Apps Script project. Because the material documenting the library is from 2017 and no authoritative current maintenance record or compatibility statement is established, verify that the library still runs as expected in your project.

The typical flow is to configure cookie storage and the login details, set a response fragment that reliably indicates a logged-out page, then make the request. When that indicator is found, Navigator can submit the configured login payload and, if refetch-on-login is enabled, fetch the original path again. The indicator is an application-specific choice: select text that signals a logged-out response, rather than a fragment that can also appear on ordinary pages.
Cookie persistence is optional. If enabled, stored cookies live in the script’s properties and are namespaced using the configured cookie username. Treat those stored values as session credentials: limit access to the Apps Script project and its properties, and avoid logging sensitive cookie or login data.

Submit forms and handle CSRF tokens
Navigator includes HTML helpers for extracting values, attributes, and attributes located relative to matching content. The published form example uses extractReverse to locate a CSRF token and getFormParam or extract to obtain hidden form fields.
- Fetch the page containing the form.
- Use the extraction helpers to read the hidden inputs and CSRF token from the returned HTML.
- Include the required values in the POST payload, along with any other fields the application expects.
- Send the request with
doPostorsendRequest, supplying headers when the endpoint requires them.
For a regular form submission, an object payload is encoded like a UrlFetchApp form submission. If the endpoint expects JSON, stringify the object yourself before sending it; string payloads are sent verbatim. The form’s actual field names, token placement, and required headers depend on the target application, so the helper methods do not remove the need to inspect that form’s response and requirements.

Inspect cookies, headers, and requests
getCookies()returns the current Cookie header.getLastHeaders()returns headers from the latest navigation.setDebug(true)enables request logging.updateCookies(cookie, rawCook)updates Navigator’s local cookie cache from a received Set-Cookie value and computes the Cookie header.
These methods can help diagnose a flow that is not retaining a session or receiving the expected response. Use debug logging carefully: request logs and headers can expose credentials or session data, so do not leave sensitive output in logs accessible to others.
What to verify before depending on Navigator
The available documentation establishes the library’s intended features and API, but it does not establish present-day maintenance status, a recent release history, or compatibility with the current Apps Script runtime. The original author also reported an Apps Script framework issue that limited editor autocompletion; source comments served as documentation at the time.
- Inspect the library source and confirm the method names and behavior in the version available to your project.
- Test cookie handling across separate executions if persistence is essential.
- Test the exact login payload, logout indicator, redirect path, and CSRF flow against the service you need to access.
- Confirm what gets written to execution logs and script properties, and protect those credentials accordingly.
If any of these requirements cannot be verified, hand-written UrlFetchApp code or another maintained client may be preferable. Compare options on cookie persistence, re-login behavior, redirects, payload encoding, form and token extraction, logging, and runtime maintenance rather than assuming a wrapper will suit every site.
