Its repository says AutoRest is deprecated and is scheduled for retirement on July 1, 2026, so treat it as a legacy or migration-sensitive choice for new work. Microsoft recommends evaluating TypeSpec, its actively developed successor. AutoRest repository
What AutoRest does
AutoRest is an open-source Microsoft code-generation framework that converts OpenAPI 2.0 and 3.0 specifications into client libraries for the services those specifications describe. The OpenAPI document remains the API contract; AutoRest processes it to generate language-specific source code. AutoRest introduction
That makes AutoRest useful when a service already has a suitable OpenAPI description and a team wants client code rather than hand-written HTTP plumbing. It is not a server framework: it does not implement or host the REST API.
How AutoRest generation works
AutoRest runs a configurable pipeline. Its transformation phases process and merge OpenAPI inputs into an intermediate code model, which a language-specific generator then interprets to produce code shaped for the target language. AutoRest architecture

The contract influences the generated types. For example, the documented C# mappings include an OpenAPI string with date-time format becoming DateTime, and integers formatted as int32 or int64 becoming int or long. AutoRest type mappings
Generate a client library
- Prepare an OpenAPI definition. Create or obtain a description of the service, then check that its paths, operations, schemas, and authentication details reflect the API you intend to call.
- Install AutoRest. Follow the official installation instructions for the environment and package manager you use. Installing AutoRest
- Choose a language generator and run it. A minimal Python example is
autorest --input-file=pets.json --python. Replacepets.jsonwith your OpenAPI file. - Choose an output location or namespace if needed. For example,
autorest --input-file=pets.json --python --output-folder=myFolder/ --namespace=petsdirects output tomyFolder/and sets the namespace topets. - Review and integrate the output. Add the generated source to your project, resolve its dependencies, configure authentication and runtime settings, and test it against the service. Generation alone does not establish that the client works correctly with your deployment.
The command-line tool can also read reusable configuration from Markdown, JSON, or YAML files. Its basic command shape is autorest [config-file.md | config-file.json | config-file.yaml] [additional options]; command-line options can provide or override generation settings. Choose a language and configure generation
The generation guide documents options for Python, C#, Java, TypeScript, Go, and PowerShell, with Swift documented separately. The repository describes support across C#, PowerShell, Go, Java, Node.js, TypeScript, and Python. The lists are not identical, so check the documentation for the particular generator and runtime you plan to use rather than assuming every language has the same features. Authentication behavior and language conventions also vary. AutoRest generation guide AutoRest repository
Several options help inspect or control generator selection and versions:

--list-installedlists installed generators.--list-available=nnlists available generators.--version=versionselects an AutoRest version.--resetresets AutoRest state.--use=<packagename>@<version>selects a generator package and version.--openapi-type=arm|data-planeselects an Azure-oriented API type.
These settings matter when a project depends on a particular generator, extension, or Azure integration. Record the OpenAPI input and generation settings with the project so that later runs can be reproduced. Consult the flags reference for exact option behavior. AutoRest flags reference
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you start a new project with AutoRest?
As of the repository notice, AutoRest is deprecated and scheduled to be retired on July 1, 2026. The same notice recommends TypeSpec, describing it as a modern, actively developed API description language and code-generation platform. AutoRest repository TypeSpec

For a new project, evaluate TypeSpec before adopting AutoRest-specific extensions or building workflows around AutoRest. For an existing project, the notice is a reason to assess migration effort, not proof that existing generated clients immediately stop working. The cited notice establishes the planned retirement date but does not specify what services, packages, or generated code will do after that date; verify the current project guidance before relying on future availability.
Quick Recap
What to assess before committing
- Language and runtime fit: Confirm the generator supports your target language and the conventions and dependencies your application expects.
- OpenAPI compatibility and quality: Check whether your definition uses OpenAPI 2.0 or 3.0 as expected and whether its schemas express the types you need.
- Authentication and Azure integration: Verify the selected generator’s authentication behavior and whether its runtime integration fits your service.
- Repeatable generation: Pin or record the AutoRest and extension versions where appropriate, and keep the configuration and source specification under version control.
- Maintenance horizon: Weigh the announced retirement and TypeSpec migration path against the cost of using AutoRest for your project.
