Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf an Android beta update has made your phone slow, drained its battery, broken an app, or left a Pixel unable to start, first identify the exact Android build and check that build’s official issue list. Beta defects and fixes are version-specific. For a Pixel that will not boot after a beta OTA, Google documents using the matching OTA image to recover it; returning to public firmware is a separate process that erases the device.
Start by identifying the problem and your build
Before changing settings or reinstalling anything, record the phone’s manufacturer and model, Android version and beta build, when the symptom began, and whether it affects the whole phone or one app. Note whether you can still open Settings or reach recovery. These details matter because Google’s known issues, fixes, and recovery images are tied to particular releases and devices; there is no single troubleshooting procedure established for every Android phone.
- Phone-wide problem: note whether the device is slow, unstable, unusually warm, draining battery, or failing to start.
- One-app problem: check whether other apps and system functions work normally.
- Cannot start: record the device model and the beta OTA that was installed, if known; do not use an image intended for another model or build.
Check the release notes for the exact beta
Look up the official release notes for the Android version and build installed on the phone. Google’s Android 16 notes warn that beta releases may have stability, battery, and performance issues and that some apps may not behave as expected. They also list issues that have been fixed and issues that remain. For example, Google documented excessive battery drain and haptic feedback fixes in Android 16 Beta 3.2, and Google TV launch or blank-screen issues in Beta 3. Those are dated examples, not a claim that the same problems affect current builds. Check the notes for your own release at Google’s Android 16 release notes.
If the phone still starts, check whether Settings offers a newer eligible beta OTA and whether its release notes describe your symptom. An update may contain a relevant fix, but do not assume a fix applies unless the notes or your device’s behavior support that match.

If the phone is slow or the battery drains quickly
First compare the symptom with the installed build’s known-issue list. Beta performance and battery problems can be release-specific, and an issue may already have been corrected in a later eligible beta. The Android 16 notes provide examples of both reported problems and fixes, but they cannot establish the cause of a symptom on a different Android version, build, or manufacturer’s phone.
If the release notes do not identify a match and the issue persists, report a device or system problem through the Android Beta Issue Tracker after checking whether it is already listed. Include the model, exact build, what you were doing when the problem occurred, and steps that reproduce it, if you can identify them. Google directs device, system, and Google app reports to the tracker in its Android 16 issue guidance.

If one app stops working
Check the beta release notes first: Google notes that platform changes can affect apps until they are updated. The Android 16 beta notes also warn that apps dependent on CTS-approved builds or Play Integrity may not work normally on the beta builds covered by those notes. That qualification applies to those documented Android 16 beta builds, not every beta or every app.
If the issue is confined to a third-party app and the release notes do not identify it as a platform problem, contact the app’s developer. Google’s guidance sends issues with other apps to their developers rather than the Android system tracker. The available guidance does not establish clearing cache, reinstalling, or changing settings as universal fixes for beta compatibility defects.

If a Pixel will not start after a beta OTA
Google documents applying the matching OTA image as a recovery route for a Pixel that received a beta OTA and then would not start. Use the official instructions and select the image for the exact device and applicable release; this is not the same as returning the phone to the latest public build. Google’s Pixel OTA image guide for Android 17 QPR1 lists release-specific images and identifies that listed build as released August 17, 2026. Confirm the instructions and image for your device before proceeding.
The Android 17 QPR1 page also advises unlocking the bootloader if possible before applying its current OTA image and warns that unlocking requires a full data reset. Treat that as guidance for the documented release and device procedure, not a universal step for every Pixel recovery. Read the exact instructions and understand the reset consequence before unlocking.

How to return a Pixel to public Android
Leaving beta and going back to a public Pixel build is not the same as installing a recovery OTA. Google’s factory-image documentation says switching between beta and production firmware by flashing a factory image requires a full device reset that removes all user data. Back up anything you need before starting; Google explicitly recommends a backup. The Pixel factory image guide for Android 17 QPR2 describes the process.
Google’s Android Flash Tool offers a guided route. Its documented flow requires USB debugging and a USB connection to a computer, using a data-capable cable compatible with the Pixel and computer. If you already have a suitable cable, you do not need to buy another. Follow the tool’s instructions for the specific device and build rather than treating factory-image flashing as a universal Android recovery method.

Decide which route fits
| Route | Use it when | Data implications | Scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| Check release notes and an offered beta update | The phone starts and the symptom may match a known beta issue. | The cited release notes do not state a reset requirement for checking or installing an offered OTA; back up before major recovery decisions. | Match the exact version and build. Android 16 examples are release-specific. |
| Apply a matching OTA image | A Pixel will not start after a beta OTA. | The Android 17 QPR1 instructions warn that bootloader unlocking requires a full reset; check the exact device and release guidance. | Google-documented Pixel recovery route. |
| Flash a factory image to return to public firmware | You choose to leave beta and return a Pixel to a public build. | Full reset removes all user data; back up first. | Pixel factory-image process, including the guided Android Flash Tool route. |
| Report or escalate the issue | The problem persists or appears to be a beta defect. | Reporting does not itself imply a firmware reset. | Android Beta Issue Tracker for device, system, and Google app issues; app developer for other apps. |
Back up and understand beta enrollment
For the Android 16 QPR beta enrollment route described by Google, enrollment usually does not require a full reset, but Google recommends backing up before enrollment. An enrolled device is offered ongoing beta OTAs, including QPRs, until it is unenrolled. Available releases and eligible devices depend on the version and program state; check Google’s Android 16 QPR beta enrollment page, last updated June 18, 2026, for its program details.
