Short answer: A Quarterly Platform Release (QPR) is a quarterly Android update stream within a platform version. Google describes QPRs as going to AOSP and Pixel devices as part of Feature Drops, so the terms are related—not competing kinds of updates. A major Android upgrade, by contrast, moves to a new platform version and API level. What reaches a particular phone, and when, depends on its device maker and update channel.

What each term means

Term What it describes What to expect
Quarterly Platform Release (QPR) A quarterly Android platform update stream that builds on an initial platform version. Fixes and improvements; the label alone does not guarantee there will be no user-visible effects.
Feature Drop In Google’s cited Android documentation, the Pixel-facing context in which QPRs are delivered. Pixel feature availability and rollout scope can vary by device. The term does not itself specify an API level.
Major Android upgrade A new Android platform version with its own API-level identity. May include framework API and app-behavior changes that developers need to assess.

Google’s Android 17 QPR 3 release notes say QPRs are delivered to AOSP and Google Pixel devices “as part of Feature Drops.” That wording shows how the terms fit together in Google’s program; it is not a universal definition for how every Android manufacturer names or packages updates.

How a QPR differs from a major Android upgrade

A QPR stays within the platform-version stream it builds on, while a major upgrade introduces a new platform version. Android’s API-level reference identifies the framework API revision with an integer: the current reference maps Android 16 to API level 36 and Android 17 to API level 37. See Google’s API levels reference.

That distinction matters most to app developers. A new platform version can bring API and behavior changes; Android’s app compatibility guidance distinguishes changes that affect all apps from behavior changes that apply when an app targets a newer SDK, and recommends testing. Android’s beta guidance identifies Platform Stability as the point at which APIs and app-facing behavior are final for that release: Android Beta for developers.

Does a QPR change apps or add features?

Do not read “QPR” as meaning “security fixes only” or “no app impact.” Google’s Android 16 QPR release notes state that those Android 16 updates do not include app-impacting API changes, while still warning developers to test for possible user-experience effects. That statement is specific to the cited Android 16 QPR notes; it should not be generalized to every QPR or every device maker.

Feature Drops are a delivery and feature-grouping context in Google’s Pixel documentation, not a separate API-version label. Which Pixel devices receive a particular feature depends on Google’s release details. For phones from other manufacturers, consult that manufacturer’s update notices rather than assuming the Pixel schedule or terminology applies.

What the release cadence means for Pixel owners

Google’s Android 17 QPR 3 availability page describes the Pixel beta program’s cycle as four stable public releases: the platform release followed by three QPRs. This is a description of Google’s Pixel program, not a promise that every Android phone gets quarterly updates or receives them on the same dates.

For other Android devices, the platform release date does not establish when an individual model will get an update. Eligibility, rollout timing, and update-channel details are manufacturer-specific. Check the phone maker’s support or software-update notices for the exact model and region.

What developers should test

  • For a major platform upgrade: review the compatibility changes, test app behavior on the new version, and assess both changes that affect apps generally and those activated by a newer target SDK.
  • For a QPR: check the release notes and test relevant system interactions and user-facing flows rather than assuming the update is behavior-free.
  • During a beta: use Platform Stability as the milestone for final APIs and app-facing behavior, then validate the app against the release and its documented changes.

Android’s versioning documentation also says minor SDK versions are not targetable through targetSdkVersion; apps that need to identify newer APIs use runtime checks instead. See Version your app.
