Partly—but not as a complete replacement for either. Google says its forthcoming Android XR audio glasses are designed for spoken Gemini help, calls, texts, music, directions and message summaries. Those uses overlap with earbuds and some smartwatch features. Google has not announced watch-style sleep, heart-rate or workout tracking for the glasses, and it has not yet published final retail specifications for audio quality, battery life or price.
What Android XR glasses has Google announced?
Google distinguishes two kinds of intelligent eyewear: audio glasses that deliver spoken help and display glasses that show information in the wearer’s view. In its May 2026 announcement, Google previewed designs from Gentle Monster and Warby Parker, developed with Samsung, as collections expected later in 2026. Google says the glasses can pair with Android and iOS phones. Its Android XR overview describes the first audio-glasses collections as coming in fall 2026; display glasses are presented separately as a future category.
The announced audio-glasses capabilities include asking Gemini about what you see, getting turn-by-turn directions, managing calls and texts, hearing summaries of missed messages, listening to music, taking photos and videos, translating speech and writing, and using phone apps by voice. Google says Gemini can be accessed by voice or by tapping the frame. These are announced capabilities, not confirmed performance results from released products. See Google’s May 2026 announcement for the scope of the preview.
A separate Google demonstration in May 2025 showed prototype Android XR glasses with a camera and microphones for Gemini context, speakers for AI audio, music and calls, phone-app access, and an optional in-lens display. Google said it had begun gathering feedback from trusted testers. That prototype does not establish that every final audio-glasses model will include the same features. Details are in Google’s prototype announcement.

- 【BIGGEST: THE ULTIMATE IMMERSIVE GIANT — 174″ Screen, 58° FOV, 1200p】The largest virtual display in consumer XR. Period. A 174″ screen powered by Sony's latest-generation Micro-OLED panel pushes 1200p per eye at a class-leading 58° field of view with a 120 Hz refresh rate. Every frame is edge-to-edge sharp, silky-smooth, and jaw-droppingly vivid. It's like strapping an IMAX to your face.
- 【SMARTEST: 9-LEVEL DIMMING + AUTO TRANSPARENCY — No Software Needed】 Another reason The Beast is the smartest XR glasses ever made. The Beast gives you both — cranked to eleven.
Which earbud uses could the glasses replace?
Spoken help, calls and messages
These are the clearest areas of overlap. Google says the glasses will support spoken Gemini interactions, call and text management, and summaries of missed messages. That could make them useful when you want hands-free access without putting in earbuds. The announcement does not provide comparative tests of call clarity, microphone performance or convenience, so it cannot establish whether the glasses will work as well as a particular earbud set.
Music
Google says users will be able to listen to music through the glasses’ speakers. It has not published sound-quality or noise-isolation specifications in the reviewed announcement. If you rely on earbuds for immersive listening, privacy or blocking surrounding noise, there is not enough information to treat the glasses as an equivalent replacement.

Directions and translation
Audio glasses are announced to provide turn-by-turn directions and translation. That could cover some situations where you currently listen to guidance through earbuds. Google’s broader platform description distinguishes spoken information delivered in the ear from information shown in the wearer’s line of sight; the first announced audio-glasses collections should not be confused with the separate display-glasses category.
Can they replace a smartwatch?
They may take over some notification and voice-assistant moments, but Google’s announcements do not describe the glasses as a health or fitness tracker. No watch-style heart-rate, sleep or workout tracking is specified for them.

For contrast, Google’s Fitbit Sense 2 listing describes heart-rate and sleep tracking, exercise recognition, phone notifications, and on-wrist Bluetooth calls when a paired phone is nearby. That is one concrete smartwatch example, not a claim about every watch. If those health and activity functions matter to you, the announced Android XR glasses are not a demonstrated substitute.
How the announced features compare
| Use | Android XR audio glasses | Earbuds | Smartwatch example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spoken assistant | Gemini help about your surroundings is an announced use. | Overlapping audio-assistant use; no specific earbud model was evaluated in the cited materials. | Not the central function in the Fitbit Sense 2 example. |
| Calls and messages | Google says users can manage calls, send texts and hear missed-message summaries. | Potential overlap for calls and audio; no comparative test is available. | Fitbit Sense 2 lists phone notifications and on-wrist Bluetooth calls with a nearby paired phone. |
| Music | Listening through the glasses’ speakers is announced; audio quality and noise isolation are not specified. | A common listening use, but no model-specific comparison is established here. | Not the main role relevant to this comparison. |
| Directions | Turn-by-turn directions and spoken guidance are announced. | Can deliver audio, but the cited Android XR sources do not claim visual guidance from earbuds. | The reviewed Sense 2 listing describes calls and notifications, not a comparable navigation specification. |
| Health and exercise | Not described in the reviewed glasses announcements. | Not addressed by the reviewed sources. | Fitbit Sense 2 lists heart-rate and sleep tracking and exercise recognition. |
| Camera context and capture | Camera-based queries and photo/video capture are announced; the 2025 example was a prototype. | Not documented for ordinary earbuds in the reviewed sources. | Not a focus of the cited smartwatch listing. |
What to check before deciding
Google’s announcement does not settle the retail details that determine whether the glasses fit a particular routine. When products launch, compare the final specifications and regional availability rather than assuming that previewed functions guarantee a particular experience.

- Audio: Look for independent evidence on sound quality, noise isolation and call clarity.
- Comfort and battery: Check fit for all-day wear and the published battery life.
- Phone support: Confirm compatibility with your phone and how much the glasses depend on it.
- Controls: Check how notifications are managed and how voice, touch and app access work.
- Privacy and display: Review camera indicators and permissions; confirm whether a specific model has a display, since audio and display glasses are distinct announced categories.
- Buying details: Verify price, prescription options and availability in your region once retail information is published.
Verdict by use case
- As a potential alternative to some earbud tasks: Plausible for spoken Gemini help, calls, messages, directions and casual music listening, subject to real-world performance and final specifications.
- As a smartwatch substitute: Not for health and fitness tracking on the evidence Google has announced. Some notifications and assistant interactions may overlap, but that is not the same as replacing a watch’s sensors and activity features.
- As a complete replacement for both: Not established. The announced functions overlap with selected uses, while key performance details and health-tracking capabilities remain unspecified.
