Ambassador Edge Stack can route requests to stable and candidate microservice versions through Kubernetes Listener and Mapping resources. Use a canary to control release exposure and reduce deployment risk; use A/B routing to compare defined user or request cohorts. Ambassador handles routing, but your delivery process and application must handle experiment assignment, measurement, and the decision to promote or roll back.

How Ambassador routes traffic to microservices

Ambassador Edge Stack is a Kubernetes API gateway and edge router. A Listener defines an exposed port and protocol, while a Mapping routes requests matching a host or URL path to a Kubernetes service. Those resources provide the routing layer for directing traffic to stable and candidate versions.

Deploy the versions as separately addressable Kubernetes Services or endpoint sets. Then create version-specific Mappings whose route conditions make the intended destination clear. Since multiple Mappings can compete, check how their constraints interact and inspect effective ordering and collisions before relying on them in production.

Canary release or A/B test: which approach fits?

Both approaches send requests to different versions, but they answer different questions. A canary is primarily a release-safety technique: expose a controlled portion of traffic to a candidate and increase exposure if its health is acceptable. An A/B test is a product experiment: assign defined cohorts to variants and compare outcomes such as conversion or engagement.

Decision area Canary deployment A/B test
Assignment A controlled traffic share or cohort, managed by the delivery mechanism used around Ambassador. Deterministic user or request attributes, such as a header or cookie-derived cohort, expressed as route constraints.
Objective Reduce release risk while introducing a new version. Measure whether one product or service variant produces a better outcome.
Promotion or rollback trigger Technical health signals such as error rate, latency, and saturation. Technical health plus the business KPIs chosen for the experiment.
Cohort persistence May be unnecessary for a simple release exposure, depending on the rollout design. Usually important when users should continue to see the same variant across requests.
Measurement owner The delivery and operations teams monitor release health. The application team must implement assignment, exposure logging, and statistical and KPI analysis.

How to roll out a canary with Ambassador

  1. Deploy both versions. Keep the stable version serving traffic and make the candidate independently addressable through its own Kubernetes Service or endpoint set.
  2. Define explicit routes. Create Mappings for the stable and candidate destinations. Use clear hosts, URL prefixes, headers, or query constraints where appropriate; keep the definitions in version control.
  3. Choose the traffic-share mechanism. Begin with a small cohort or percentage using the delivery controller or routing mechanism selected for your environment. The cited Ambassador material does not establish a universal built-in percentage algorithm, so document which component assigns that share and how it does so.
  4. Observe the release. Compare the candidate with the stable service for error rate, latency, saturation, and relevant business metrics. Confirm that requests reach the intended version and that Mapping rules are not colliding or being evaluated in an unexpected order.
  5. Promote or restore. Increase exposure only when the agreed guardrails pass. If they fail, restore the prior Mapping and deployment state through your normal release process.

Keep Mapping changes under the same review, testing, deployment, and operational discipline as application code. A declarative GitOps workflow makes the intended routing state reviewable and recoverable.

How to route A/B cohorts to different versions

Advanced Mapping evaluation can use URL prefix, HTTP method, request headers, query parameters, and host matching. Those constraints let you direct a selected request segment to version A and another segment to version B. For example, an application can assign a cohort and expose it through a request header or cookie; a Mapping can then match that attribute.

  • HARDWARE PLUS SECURITY SERVICES: FortiGate-60F Firewall Appliance bundled with 1 year of FortiCare Premium and FortiGuard Unified Threat Protection.
  • UNIFIED THREAT PROTECTION (UTP): Secures against advanced online threats with comprehensive web filtering and anti-botnet technologies.

  • RELIABLE CUSTOMER SUPPORT: FortiCare Premium ensures high-quality support and service continuity.
  • EFFECTIVE PROTECTION: Employs advanced filtering technologies to safeguard against sophisticated threats.

Routing is only one part of an A/B test. Your application or experiment system must define how users enter a cohort, preserve assignment as needed, log exposure, and measure outcomes. Decide in advance which business KPI matters and how you will evaluate the result; a gateway route alone does not establish statistical significance or prove that a variant caused a change.

How to keep a user’s traffic consistent

Ambassador supports round-robin, least-request, ring-hash, and maglev load-balancing policies. Cookie, header, and source-IP affinity are available with ring-hash or maglev. Choose a policy based on whether the requirement is simply to distribute requests or to keep related requests associated with the same backend or cohort.

GL.iNet GL-MT5000 Brume 3 Wired VPN Security Gateway NO Wi-Fi
  • 【Up to 1100 Mbps VPN Speed 】 Hardware-accelerated WireGuard and OpenVPN-DCO deliver up to 1100 Mbps VPN throughput, over 3× faster than Brume 2 for smooth remote access and file transfers.
  • 【Three 2.5G Ports & Multi-WAN】Tri-port 2.5GbE design with flexible WAN LAN configuration supports multi-gigabit wired setups, dual-ISP Multi-WAN and failover to keep home and SOHO networks online.
  • 【Stealth VPN Obfuscation】VPN obfuscation disguises VPN traffic as regular HTTPS, helping you evade blocking, bypass restrictive networks and maintain stable, private connections.
  • 【DPI protection】Deep Packet Inspection with visual dashboards blocks adult/gambling/malicious sites, while SQM and QoS prioritize gaming, calls, and video when bandwidth is tight
  • 【OpenWrt & USB 3.0 Expansion】OpenWrt with 1GB DDR4 and 8GB eMMC lets you install plugins and build VPN, ad-blocking or NAS, while USB 3.0 Type‑C connects high-speed storage or 4G/5G dongles

Backend affinity and experiment assignment are related but distinct. Affinity can help a user continue reaching a consistent backend; the application or experiment logic still needs to assign and record the user’s A/B variant. Select the affinity input deliberately: a source IP may represent more than one user, while cookie or header affinity depends on the relevant value being present and consistent.

How Ambassador discovers microservices

Kubernetes service-level discovery is the default. Endpoint-level Kubernetes discovery enables advanced balancing, and Consul endpoint discovery can support an estate that combines Kubernetes services with virtual-machine workloads. Choose the discovery model that matches where the services actually run; it does not replace the need for explicit, testable Mapping rules.

What to verify before exposing production traffic

  • Exposure: Configure the Listener and Host for the intended external traffic, and set up TLS where required.
  • Routing: Verify that stable and candidate Mappings target the correct services and that overlapping constraints have the intended effective order.
  • Release controls: Version-control Mapping changes and apply them through the continuous-delivery process so promotion and restoration are reproducible.
  • Observability: Monitor technical health and, for experiments, instrument exposure and business outcomes outside the routing decision itself.
  • Capacity and balancing: Plan scaling and select an intentional load-balancing and affinity policy for the traffic pattern.

Ambassador-specific performance or adoption figures are not established here, so rollout sizing should be based on your own service capacity and observed production behavior rather than an assumed gateway benchmark.
