The right Node.js static-site generator depends on whether you are publishing content or building an application. Astro and Eleventy are strong content-first options; Hexo focuses on blogs. Next.js and Nuxt can serve static pages but also support broader application and server features. Gatsby is a React- and GraphQL-centered choice for static sites.
Static site generator or hybrid framework?
A static site generator creates HTML files ahead of time, typically during a build. Those files can be served from a CDN without running a Node.js server for each page request. Some frameworks in this list also support server rendering or other application features, so “static” describes a deployment option rather than the full scope of the framework.
For example, Next.js can generate pages at build time: its documentation says “the page HTML is generated when you run next build,” and the result can be reused for requests and cached by a CDN (Next.js static generation documentation). A full Next.js deployment can also use a Node.js server, Docker, static export, or adapters, with different capabilities depending on the mode (Next.js deployment documentation).
How the six generators differ
| Generator | Best fit | Key distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Astro | Content-focused sites | Performance-oriented, with zero client-side JavaScript shipped by default according to Netlify; project configuration can change the final browser payload (Netlify framework overview). |
| Eleventy (11ty) | Content sites with custom template workflows | Flexible and configurable, without requiring a particular component framework (Netlify framework overview). |
| Next.js | React teams that may need server features | Supports build-time static generation as well as server-based deployment (static generation; deployment modes). |
| Nuxt | Vue teams building content sites or applications | Vue-based framework with static-site capability and broader hybrid features (Netlify framework overview; IONOS comparison). |
| Gatsby | React projects built around a GraphQL content workflow | React and GraphQL-centered; its static output can be deployed without a server (Netlify framework overview; Gatsby build-process overview). |
| Hexo | Conventional Markdown-driven blogs | Blog-first framework that converts Markdown or other markup into static files; it requires Node.js and Git (Hexo documentation). |
Which one should you choose?
Choose Astro for a content-focused site with a performance emphasis
Astro is a natural fit for content-heavy sites where you want to avoid sending browser JavaScript by default. It can also accommodate components from different technologies, making it useful when a team wants a content-first site without committing every interface element to one component ecosystem. Treat zero client-side JavaScript as the default behavior, not a guarantee about every configured project.
#1 Best Overall
Choose Eleventy for template flexibility
Eleventy suits teams that want control over templates and a straightforward content build rather than a full application framework. It is a good candidate when the publishing workflow and output matter more than adopting React or Vue.
Choose Next.js for React and a route to server features
Next.js works well when the team already uses React and wants to render some pages statically while retaining the option to add server capabilities. Decide the deployment mode early: static export is more constrained than a full Node.js server deployment, so an application that depends on server features should not be planned as a static-only site.
Rank #2
Choose Nuxt for the Vue equivalent
Nuxt is the Vue-based option when a site may grow from static content into a more interactive or server-rendered application. It is better understood as a hybrid framework with static capabilities than as a narrowly focused content generator.
Choose Gatsby for an established React and GraphQL content stack
Gatsby remains relevant when the project already relies on its React and GraphQL approach and the goal is static output. For a new project, weigh that stack against the workflow your team actually wants; its static capability alone does not make it the automatic choice over Astro or Eleventy.

Rank #3
Choose Hexo for a simple blog workflow
Hexo is purpose-built for blogs and converts Markdown or other markup into static files. Its documentation describes it as “a fast, simple and powerful blog framework” (Hexo documentation). It is a sensible fit if a conventional blog workflow is enough and broad application features are not needed.
Do you need a server to deploy the site?
Not necessarily. If the chosen rendering mode produces static HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and assets at build time, those files can be hosted as static content and served through a CDN. Gatsby explicitly documents static output that can be deployed without a server (Gatsby build-process overview). Next.js also supports static generation, but its server-based features require an appropriate deployment mode; check its deployment documentation before committing to static export.
Rank #4
Netlify lists integrations for Astro, Eleventy, Gatsby, Hexo, Next.js, and Nuxt (Netlify framework overview). The essential decision is not the hosting brand: it is whether your selected framework features can run in the static deployment mode you intend to use.

IONOS reported GitHub-star counts as correct in May 2025: Next.js 131k, Nuxt 56k, Gatsby 55k, Astro 50k, Hexo 40k, and Eleventy 18k (IONOS comparison). Stars are a dated popularity snapshot, not a measure of speed, suitability, maintenance quality, or project success; they should not outweigh the rendering model and content workflow you need.
