Java 8 has no trait keyword. To share behavior in a trait-like way, define interfaces with default methods and let a class implement multiple interfaces. When unrelated interfaces provide the same default method, the class must override it and make the choice explicit.
How Java 8 provides trait-like behavior
A Java 8 default method is an interface method with an implementation. It lets an interface supply reusable behavior while preserving compatibility for existing classes that implement the interface. Oracle describes this purpose in its default methods tutorial; the Java SE 8 language specification defines a default method as one declared in an interface with the default modifier (JLS, Chapter 9).
For example, separate interfaces can express independent capabilities:
public interface Auditable {
default String auditLabel() {
return "auditable";
}
}
public interface Cacheable {
default void clearCache() {
// Reusable behavior; delegate state to the implementing class as needed.
}
}
public final class Order implements Auditable, Cacheable {
// Inherits both defaults.
}
Order can use both default methods without inheriting from either interface as a class. This is interface composition: a class can implement multiple interfaces, and an interface can extend multiple parent interfaces. See Oracle’s interfaces tutorial.

Can one class combine multiple traits?
Yes. A class can implement multiple interfaces, so it can combine several independent capabilities. Java also permits an interface to extend more than one interface. This is multiple inheritance of type and default implementation, not multiple inheritance of classes: a Java class still has only one direct superclass.
Keep each interface focused on a capability that makes sense for all its implementations. If behavior needs object-specific mutable state, keep that state in the implementing class or a collaborator; Java 8 interfaces have no per-object instance fields. Oracle’s interface definition guidance covers the distinction between interface members.

What happens when default methods conflict?
If two unrelated interfaces supply a default method with the same signature, the implementing class must resolve the ambiguity by overriding that method. Choose and document the policy rather than relying on an implicit selection:
interface JsonLog {
default String format() { return "json"; }
}
interface TextLog {
default String format() { return "text"; }
}
final class Report implements JsonLog, TextLog {
@Override
public String format() {
return JsonLog.super.format();
}
}
Here, Report explicitly selects JsonLog’s implementation. It could instead return a new value or combine behavior. Leaving the conflict unresolved is a compile-time error. Oracle explains the compiler’s default-method selection rules in its multiple inheritance of implementation tutorial.

An interface that extends another interface has three options for an inherited default: leave it inherited, redeclare the method as abstract so implementing classes must provide it, or provide a replacement default. These choices let an interface refine a capability’s contract before a concrete class implements it. The Java SE 8 specification describes these inheritance rules in its interface chapter.
Default, abstract, and static interface methods
- Default methods provide instance behavior that implementing classes inherit unless they override it.
- Abstract methods declare behavior that implementing classes must provide.
- Static methods are helpers associated with the interface, not inherited instance behavior. Call them using the interface name, such as
Auditable.helper().
Oracle’s default-method guide and the Java SE 8 language specification describe these method forms and their rules.

When to use interfaces instead of an abstract class
| Design question | Trait-like interfaces with defaults | Abstract class |
|---|---|---|
| Can a type combine behavior from multiple sources? | Yes; a class can implement multiple interfaces. | No; a class has only one direct superclass. |
| Where does per-object mutable state live? | In the implementing class or a collaborator; interfaces have no per-object instance fields. | Can be owned by the superclass. |
| How are overlapping implementations handled? | The implementing class must resolve conflicting unrelated defaults. | Behavior is inherited through the single superclass chain. |
| Can behavior be added to an existing interface while retaining compatibility? | Default methods can support interface evolution for older implementations. | An abstract class does not add behavior to an unrelated existing interface. |
| Does the behavior depend on shared superclass state or implementation? | Best when it can be expressed through the interface contract and composed as a capability. | Better suited when subclasses need a common base implementation or state. |
Use a default method when its behavior is valid for every implementation of that interface and can be stated in the interface contract. Keep assumptions about required abstract methods clear, and resolve conflicting defaults near the concrete class so the policy is visible. Prefer several orthogonal capabilities over one oversized interface.
