Ren’Py is a free, open-source engine for making visual novels and other text-led interactive stories. Its readable scripting language handles dialogue, scenes and choices; Python is available for more complex game logic. The engine can build for desktop and mobile, and offers a beta web export with limitations.
What is Ren’Py?
Ren’Py is software for creating interactive stories that combine words, images and sound. It is designed primarily for visual novels, and can also be used for life-simulation games. Its script language is built for large, text-heavy projects, while Python lets developers add more involved simulation logic. Ren’Py’s official site describes it as a visual novel engine for stories that run on computers and mobile devices.
How do you make a game with Ren’Py?
The Ren’Py Launcher is the desktop hub for creating, managing, editing and running projects. A typical project uses Ren’Py script for dialogue, scenes and player choices, with Python available where the game calls for more advanced logic. The Quickstart tutorial walks through a small example covering those basics and project management.
Is Ren’Py free for commercial use?
Yes. The Ren’Py project says the engine is open source and free for commercial use. Its license permits use, copying, modification, publication, distribution, sublicensing and sale subject to its conditions. The engine and bundled dependencies may have their own applicable licenses, so review the current license terms when preparing a release.

What platforms can Ren’Py games run on?
The official platform list includes Windows 10 or later, macOS 10.10 or later, Linux on x86_64 or Arm, Android 5.0 or later, iOS 11 or later, and HTML5/WebAssembly in beta. Ren’Py’s platform information is the place to check for changes to supported systems.
Desktop and mobile builds
From the Launcher, Build Distributions can produce Windows, Linux and macOS packages, as well as market-oriented packages for storefront workflows such as Steam and itch.io. That means Ren’Py can prepare game builds for those services; creators still need to follow each storefront’s separate publishing and submission requirements. Mobile platforms are also listed as targets, though requirements for preparing and distributing mobile apps differ from desktop packaging.

Web builds
Web export is available in the Launcher under “Web (Beta).” It is not a drop-in equivalent to desktop: the web port does not support multithreading. Code that uses renpy.invoke_in_thread() or Python’s threading module is unsupported there. Test web builds for functionality and performance rather than assuming all desktop behaviors will carry over. See the web documentation for current details.
When is Ren’Py a good fit?
Ren’Py is a natural choice when a project centers on dialogue, choices, scenes, images and sound, and benefits from a purpose-built text-first workflow. Python provides a route to deeper simulation, but projects that depend heavily on custom systems should account for the code they will need to write. When comparing it with another engine, consider authoring speed for text, required custom code, 2D presentation and interface flexibility, target platforms, license obligations and storefront packaging.
