FireEye released GoCrack in 2017 as an open-source management layer for distributing password-cracking tasks across CPU- and GPU-capable machines. A central server assigns work to workers running hashcat, while a web interface lets authorized users create and manage tasks. It was designed for security testing, but password-cracking capability is dual-use and should be used only with explicit authorization.
What is FireEye GoCrack?
GoCrack was released by FireEye’s Innovation and Custom Engineering (ICE) team on October 30, 2017. The project provides a web-based, real-time interface for creating, viewing, and managing password-cracking tasks. It is a management frontend written in Go, rather than a replacement for the cracking engine itself. The public repository describes the project and provides its source code.
At launch, FireEye said GoCrack supported hashcat v3.6 and later. The repository README currently lists hashcat 6.X and later; these are statements from different points in the project’s history, not interchangeable version requirements. The repository identifies an MIT license and shows one public release, dated October 30, 2017.
How does the managed cracking system work?
A GoCrack server coordinates workers, and tasks are distributed across the available machines. Users interact with the server through the web interface to create and monitor work; the workers supply the CPU or GPU resources used by hashcat. This server-and-worker design is intended to manage jobs across multiple systems rather than require users to operate each cracking process independently.

Can GoCrack distribute hashcat jobs across GPUs?
Yes. FireEye described automatic task distribution across CPU- and GPU-capable machines. The documented NVIDIA option is to run workers in a container with full access to the GPUs. GoCrack manages and distributes tasks; the GPUs perform the computation through the worker and hashcat setup.
What hardware and software does GoCrack need?
- Server: FireEye documented running the GoCrack server on a Linux machine with Docker.
- Workers: The system can distribute work to machines with CPUs and/or GPUs. For NVIDIA GPU workers, the launch announcement documented containerized workers with GPU access.
- Cracking engine: GoCrack relies on hashcat. The supported version stated at launch was v3.6 or later; the repository README now says 6.X or later.
The announcement does not give a minimum CPU, memory, GPU, or storage specification, so those requirements should not be inferred from the documented deployment options.
How does GoCrack protect task data?
GoCrack uses entitlement-based access: task data is available to its creator and to people granted access. FireEye said sensitive actions—including viewing cracked passwords, modifying tasks, and downloading task files—are logged for administrator auditing. Shared dictionaries and mangling rules can be used by other users without giving them permission to download or edit the underlying files. FireEye’s launch announcement describes these controls.
These features support access control and accountability, but they do not by themselves establish that a deployment is secure. Administrators still need to control account access, protect the server and its files, and handle recovered passwords as sensitive data.

Is GoCrack open source, and what is known about its current status?
Yes. FireEye released GoCrack as open-source software, and the public repository identifies the MIT license. The repository page shows one release dated October 30, 2017. That history does not establish how actively the project is maintained today or whether it is suitable for a new deployment; verify the current code, dependencies, and compatibility before relying on it.
FireEye’s 2017 announcement listed MySQL and PostgreSQL support for larger deployments, interface-based file management and editing, automatic task expiration, and expanded hashcat configuration among future plans. Those were roadmap items at the time. The repository page alone does not confirm that each one shipped, so they should not be treated as current capabilities without separate verification.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why is the tool dual-use?
Password cracking can help security teams assess password policies, test password effectiveness, and evaluate password storage. Christopher Schmitt wrote that such tools are “an effective way for security professionals to test password effectiveness, develop improved methods to securely store passwords, and audit current password requirements.” FireEye also cited work involving password-protected archives and internal tools. These activities are appropriate only when conducted on systems and data the tester is authorized to assess. The same distributed capability could be misused against stolen or otherwise unauthorized data; an independent report published October 31, 2017, noted that risk. SecurityWeek’s report covers the release and its dual-use implications.
