For Linux scripting, Bash or POSIX sh remains the safest default; for an interactive terminal, choose zsh for deep customization or fish for friendly features with little setup. You do not have to replace Bash scripts to use another shell day to day: zsh and fish can run interactively while scripts continue to use their declared interpreter.
What is a Linux shell?
A shell is both a command interpreter and a programming language. It accepts commands interactively at a terminal and can also execute commands from a file or string. That dual role matters: the shell you prefer for typing commands does not have to be the shell used to run your scripts.

Bash is the GNU Project’s Bourne Again Shell. GNU describes it as an “sh-compatible shell” intended to conform to the IEEE POSIX Shell and Tools standard. Its lineage draws on the Bourne, Korn (ksh) and C (csh) shells, and it adds features such as command-line editing, history, job control, functions, aliases, arrays and arithmetic. Its compatibility and broad availability make it a practical baseline for shared Linux scripts and administration.
How Bash, zsh and fish compare
| Shell | Best fit | Interactive strengths | Compatibility and cautions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bash | Shared scripts and broadly compatible administration | Command-line editing, history, job control, functions, aliases, arrays and arithmetic; a modern interactive setup may require configuration. | Designed for sh compatibility and POSIX orientation. A strong choice when compatibility or team conventions matter. |
| zsh | Power users seeking customization and advanced completion | Extensive completion and interactive configuration options, with a large ecosystem of configuration frameworks. | Startup configuration and syntax require deliberate management. Do not assume a Bash script will run as zsh. |
| fish | Users who want a discoverable terminal with useful defaults | Syntax highlighting, autosuggestions, tab completion, and navigable, filterable selection lists; designed to work without configuration. | Its scripting language differs from Bash, so it is not a drop-in Bash scripting replacement. Login-shell suitability depends on the operating system. |
Which shell should you choose?
Choose Bash for scripts and compatibility
Use Bash when other Linux machines or teammates need to run your scripts, your team already standardizes on it, or compatibility matters more than interactive features. For automation intended to work across environments, use POSIX sh or Bash as appropriate, and declare the intended interpreter rather than relying on the shell a user happens to prefer.

Choose zsh for a customizable interactive shell
Zsh suits users who want extensive completion and control over their interactive setup. Its combination of capabilities associated with ksh and tcsh makes it a flexible command interpreter, but that flexibility comes with configuration to maintain. Treat scripts as zsh scripts only when they explicitly target zsh; a Bash script should run under Bash.
Choose fish for approachable defaults
Fish (the friendly interactive shell) emphasizes immediate usability. Its syntax highlighting, autosuggestions, completion and selection lists can make interactive work easier without first assembling a configuration. Choose it when those defaults appeal and you are willing to use a scripting language that is different from Bash.

Can fish or zsh run Bash scripts?
Do not assume that they can. Fish deliberately uses a different scripting syntax, and zsh has its own syntax and behavior. A script should identify the shell it is written for and be run by that interpreter. Keep shared automation in POSIX sh or Bash unless it explicitly requires another shell; changing your interactive shell does not require rewriting existing Bash scripts.
Should you change your Linux login shell?
Running a shell in a terminal is different from making it the account’s login shell. Fish’s documentation warns: “Setting fish as your login shell may cause issues, such as an incorrect PATH.” It explains that some operating systems require a Bourne-compatible login shell that reads /etc/profile. Requirements vary, so check your distribution’s expectations and verify your environment before changing the account setting. If you mainly want fish’s interactive features, you can launch it inside a terminal while keeping Bash or another Bourne-compatible shell as the login shell.

A practical setup decision
- For shared scripts: write for POSIX
shwhere its features suffice, or use Bash when Bash features are needed; identify the interpreter in the script. - For daily terminal use: try fish for friendly defaults or zsh for extensive customization and completion.
- Before changing the login shell: check your operating system’s requirements, particularly whether the login environment relies on a Bourne-compatible shell reading
/etc/profile. - Keep the roles separate: use your preferred interactive shell without assuming it will interpret scripts written for another shell.
