These Raspberry Pi ideas bring back the satisfying feel of turning a knob or pressing a button: one project selects internet-radio presets, while another points toward a room-to-room intercom. The radio’s knob does not tune broadcast frequencies; it moves among preset stream URLs. If you want over-the-air AM/FM or digital radio reception instead, that requires different hardware.

What the Raspberry Pi radio knob actually controls

The roundup describes an internet radio built around a Raspberry Pi, potentiometers and an analog-to-digital converter. Turning a physical control selects from preset internet-radio station URLs, giving the experience a tactile, radio-like interface without mechanically tuning AM or FM frequencies. The roundup points readers toward Raspberry Pi’s internet-radio tutorial, but its surfaced description does not specify a circuit, software setup or required ADC model. See the roundup description.

There are a couple of ways to make a physical control work, and they are not interchangeable components. A potentiometer produces a changing analog voltage, so a Pi project using one needs an analog-to-digital converter to read it. A rotary encoder instead reports rotation as digital GPIO signals; Raspberry Pi’s audio documentation describes rotary encoders as an option for physical volume control. The circuit and software have to match the control you choose. Consult Raspberry Pi’s audio documentation for its GPIO guidance.

How the intercom concept is framed

The roundup suggests starting with talKKonnect, which its excerpt describes as an open-source, headless Mumble client, then adding Raspberry Pi GPIO controls such as buttons or dials. That is a high-level project direction: the available description does not establish setup steps, current software support, network range, latency or security. Those details should be checked before treating the concept as a ready-to-build intercom.

For an optional audio-board route, Raspberry Pi documents Codec Zero for projects including walkie-talkies and vintage radios. Codec Zero has a built-in microphone, supports an external electret microphone and provides a connection for a 1.2 W, 8-ohm mono speaker. It is compatible with Pi computers that have a 40-pin GPIO header. This is a possible audio component for an intercom-style project, not hardware identified as part of the roundup’s talKKonnect concept. Details are in the official audio-board documentation.

Internet-radio presets versus broadcast reception

Preset internet radio and broadcast radio are different architectures. The former selects stream URLs over a network; it does not receive local AM/FM or DAB broadcasts merely because it has a tuning-style knob. For genuine broadcast reception, Raspiaudio describes a separate radio shield supporting AM, FM, DAB, DAB+ and HD Radio, with local controls and audio outputs. These are manufacturer-described capabilities; check current product details and regional support before choosing it. Raspiaudio says HD Radio is subject to licensing and that users must verify their rights for their country, market and application. See the manufacturer’s announcement.

Choose audio hardware by connection and power needs

Pi audio boards differ in compatibility, inputs, outputs and amplification, so identify the intended Pi model and speaker setup before buying or wiring a board. Raspberry Pi’s documentation distinguishes Codec Zero’s mono-speaker support from DigiAMP+, a stereo amplifier board that needs a separate 12–24 V power supply. The documentation says DigiAMP+ is designed for Raspberry Pi 3 and earlier; with Pi 4 or later, it identifies an externally powered USB hub for use with the board. Check the official audio documentation for the relevant configuration.

  • Pi compatibility: Confirm the board supports the specific Pi and its GPIO-header arrangement.
  • Inputs: Check whether it includes a microphone or supports the kind of external microphone you need.
  • Outputs: Distinguish speaker connections from headphone or line outputs.
  • Amplification: Check whether the board supplies an onboard amplifier and whether it is mono or stereo.
  • Power: Determine whether it requires a separate supply or a powered hub in your chosen configuration.

Other ideas mentioned in the roundup

The roundup also names a backyard scoreboard for get-togethers, but its surfaced description does not provide the components or software. Another Raspberry Pi audio project, the Interactive Storytelling Radio by Dane and Nicole of 8 Bits and a Byte, was designed to recreate choose-your-own-adventure books with voice controls. The makers describe Raspberry Pi as the project’s control centre, coordinating its components. That is a separate project, not evidence of the radio-knob or intercom builds’ specifications.
