Use LiveKit’s Flutter client SDK to receive transcript messages from the lk.transcription text stream, then render each transcript segment as one UI item that updates as new text arrives. The SDK’s higher-level Session API includes a transcription receiver and message history; use TranscriptionStreamReceiver directly when you need to manage the receiver yourself.
What you need
- A Flutter app using LiveKit’s
livekit_clientpackage. The official Flutter API reference identifies version 2.13.0; check the signatures in the version installed in your project. LiveKit Flutter SDK API reference - A LiveKit room connected to an agent that produces text-stream transcripts. LiveKit documents this receiver for agent-powered transcription streams and specifies
livekit-agents1.0.0 or newer for text streams. TranscriptionStreamReceiver API reference - Microphone permissions and platform setup for the target platform, following the LiveKit Flutter quickstart.
Install and prepare the Flutter client
Add the package using Flutter’s package command:
flutter pub add livekit_client
Complete the platform-specific permission and connection setup in LiveKit’s quickstart. Permission declarations vary by platform, so use the instructions for the platforms your app supports rather than assuming one configuration applies everywhere.
Choose how to receive transcripts
Use the Session API for the usual app flow
LiveKit’s Session abstraction manages room connection, agent dispatch, and message relay. It uses a TranscriptionStreamReceiver on lk.transcription by default and maintains ordered message history intended for UI observation. If your app already uses Session, observe its messages rather than creating a second receiver without a specific need. See the Session API reference.
Use TranscriptionStreamReceiver for custom handling
Create and manage a TranscriptionStreamReceiver directly when you need a custom topic, receiver lifecycle, or message-handling path. Its default topic is lk.transcription, and the topic can be configured. Dispose of the receiver when the UI or session that owns it ends. Consult the class API reference for the constructor and disposal signatures that match your installed package version.

Render updates as one item per segment
The receiver aggregates chunked updates into a ReceivedMessage for each transcript segment. When the stream supplies lk.segment_id, that stable identity lets the UI associate successive updates with the same row. Use it as a list key where available; do not create a new row for every incoming chunk.
In your state-handling logic, locate the existing message by segment ID and update its displayed text and finalization state. If no matching segment exists, add a row. The receiver exposes finalization metadata through transcription attributes, so the UI can distinguish a segment that is still changing from one marked final. Match the exact message and attribute accessors to your installed livekit_client version.

Handle agent and user updates differently
- Agent transcripts: updates arrive as chunks that are appended until the segment is finalized. Apply each new chunk to the matching segment rather than treating it as a separate transcript.
- User transcripts: an update may resend the full current text for that segment. Replace the segment’s displayed text with the new value instead of blindly appending it, which would repeat words already received.
These differing update patterns are why segment identity and update semantics matter more than simply appending every incoming string to a chat list. The API documents both behaviors in the TranscriptionStreamReceiver reference.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep the agent and client setup aligned
Receiving a transcript in Flutter does not itself produce one: the connected LiveKit agent must publish the text stream. The receiver documentation specifies livekit-agents 1.0.0 or newer for text streams. Confirm that requirement and the client API signatures against the versions actually used by your app and agent. LiveKit describes Agents as a code-first voice-agent SDK available in Python and Node.js in its API documentation.

Common implementation mistakes
- Listening to the wrong topic: the receiver defaults to
lk.transcription. If you configure another topic, it must match the topic used by the producer. - Showing each chunk as a new row: group updates by stable segment ID so a partial transcript grows in place.
- Appending user updates unconditionally: user updates may be full replacements, not new suffixes.
- Leaving a custom receiver alive: dispose of a directly managed receiver when its owner’s lifecycle ends.
- Copying sample signatures across versions: confirm imports, constructors, and message properties against the installed
livekit_clientrelease.
