Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteYes—but “using an old phone for Android Auto” can mean two different things. The standard setup uses the phone as the source and projects supported apps onto a compatible car display. A separate, third-party approach uses an Android phone or tablet as the receiver screen. Which one works depends on the phone, the car or stereo, and the connection method; they are not interchangeable.
First, decide what role the old phone will play
Use it as the Android Auto source phone
In the standard setup, Android Auto runs on the phone and appears on a compatible car display or aftermarket stereo. The car screen is the display; the phone supplies the connection and apps. Android Auto is integrated into phones, and Android 10 and newer do not need a separate Android Auto app download, according to Google’s setup guidance.
Use it as a receiver screen
A different arrangement uses an Android device as the receiver for Android Auto from another device. The third-party project Headunit Revived documents this phone-or-tablet receiver role. Its instructions and limitations are specific to the project, not Google’s standard phone-to-car setup.
Or simply run apps on the phone
Mounting an old phone and opening its own navigation or media apps is another option, but that is neither standard Android Auto projection nor a receiver-app setup. A mount alone does not turn the phone into an Android Auto display.

Check compatibility before connecting anything
For standard Android Auto, Google currently lists Android 9 or higher for most wired connections and Android 11 or higher for wireless connections and select newer vehicles. The car or stereo must also support Android Auto. Check the exact vehicle or head-unit model against Google’s compatibility and setup information and the vehicle maker’s instructions before buying accessories.
- Wired: Use a high-quality USB cable that fits the phone and the vehicle’s Android Auto-compatible USB port.
- Wireless: Both the phone and vehicle must support wireless Android Auto.
- Data: The phone needs mobile data coverage for Android Auto features that rely on connectivity.
- Receiver app: For Headunit Revived, verify the Android versions and connection method supported by the exact device pair; its project notes report wireless drops and version-specific limitations.
Set up standard Android Auto
Wired connection
- Confirm the Android phone and car or stereo are compatible. Check that the phone has mobile data coverage.
- Park the car and turn on its infotainment system. Google’s instruction is to have the car in Park with infotainment on and allow setup to finish before driving.
- Connect the phone to the vehicle’s Android Auto USB port with a high-quality cable.
- Follow the prompts on the phone and car display. If Android Auto requests an update, complete it and follow any further prompts.
Wireless connection
- Confirm wireless Android Auto is supported by both the phone and the vehicle, and that the phone has mobile data coverage.
- For the first connection, pair the phone with the car over Bluetooth. Keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on during setup, as Google advises.
- Follow the prompts on both devices. If Android Auto does not start automatically, launch it from the car display.
Google’s step-by-step instructions are available in Android Auto Help.

Use an Android device as a receiver with Headunit Revived
Headunit Revived is a third-party project rather than the standard Google phone-to-car-display setup. Its documented wired method connects the Android source phone to the Android receiver device over USB. Its Wireless Helper route requires both devices to be on the same network and a companion helper service to initiate the connection. Follow the project’s current README and device-specific notes for the precise steps.
Do not assume this will work reliably with every old phone or tablet. The project flags wireless drops and Android-version-specific limitations, so compatibility and stability need to be checked on the devices you intend to use. A phone mount may be needed to position a receiver device safely, but it does not resolve app or connection incompatibility.

Know what Android Auto does—and does not—show
Android Auto is designed for a driver-optimized experience on a compatible car or stereo display, not as a general-purpose mirror of every phone app. App availability is limited to supported categories and experiences, as described by Android Developers. If you need an app that is not supported for Android Auto, do not assume it will appear just because the phone connects.
