To prevent two users from overwriting each other’s client-status changes, make the status update conditional on the status—or version—the user originally read, and perform that comparison and update atomically. In this context, CAS means compare-and-swap: a concurrency guard, not the unrelated Central Authentication Service single-sign-on protocol.
What does compare-and-swap mean in client management?
A compare-and-swap (CAS) operation changes a record only if its current state still matches the state the caller expects. A CAS value is a snapshot marker for an item: Couchbase describes it as “a value representing the current state of an item” and says it can control how concurrent document modifications are handled. Couchbase documentation
For a client record, imagine a staff member opens a record whose status is Pending. Before they save a change to Active, another staff member changes it to On hold. A guarded update checks that the status is still Pending; if not, it rejects the first staff member’s stale write rather than silently replacing the newer status.
The CAS acronym is overloaded: Apereo’s specification uses CAS for Central Authentication Service, an HTTP-based single-sign-on protocol. There, “client” refers to an end user or browser in the SSO system, not a customer-management record. Apereo CAS protocol specification

How do you make a status transition atomic?
The comparison and mutation must be one atomic operation. For a relational database, a conditional update can express the guard directly:
UPDATE clients
SET status = :new_status,
updated_at = CURRENT_TIMESTAMP
WHERE id = :client_id
AND status = :expected_status;
This is an illustrative adaptation of a documented guarded-update pattern, not a feature specific to any client-management product. The pattern is also expressed as an update constrained by both record ID and expected state; the cited example concerns job state. Orion decision record on atomic job-state transitions

Check the affected-row count:
- One row changed: the expected status matched and the transition was applied.
- Zero rows changed: the record may be missing, or its status no longer matches the expected value. Distinguish these cases according to your authorization and information-disclosure policy.
Do not read the status, validate it in application code, and then issue an unguarded update. Another request can change the record between that read and write. If a transition depends on more than the current status, include its invariants in the same conditional mutation or validate them within a transaction. Examples include whether the source-to-destination status edge is allowed, whether the requester is authorized, and whether related timestamps are consistent.
Should you guard by status, version number, or ETag?
These approaches differ in what they protect. A status-only condition rejects competing changes to the status field; a record version or representation validator can reject a write after any change covered by that marker. Choose the narrowest guard that protects the invariants your operation depends on.

| Approach | Guard and atomicity | Conflict signal | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Expected status in SQL | One conditional update checks the ID and expected status. | Affected-row count of zero; the application can map this to a typed conflict. | Targets status changes specifically, but does not detect unrelated field edits unless they are also guarded. |
| Whole-record version | Update only when the stored version matches the version read; comparison and change must be atomic. | Typically an affected-row count or application conflict, depending on the implementation. | Can catch broader concurrent edits, but the version’s retry behavior matters if a response is lost. |
| ETag with HTTP If-Match | The API client sends the validator it read; the server must enforce it atomically with the write. | HTTP 412 Precondition Failed for a mismatch, or 428 Precondition Required where a protected write requires a missing If-Match header; exact behavior depends on the service. | Works at the API representation boundary, so the validator’s scope and representation must be understood. |
SAP documents 412 for an outdated ETag and 428 when a protected write omits If-Match; Azure also documents 412 for an ETag mismatch. SAP documentation on conditional requests Azure Cosmos DB optimistic concurrency documentation
Treat ETags as opaque validators, not numbers clients should interpret. Microsoft’s API guidance warns that a simple version-number ETag can make an identical retry look conflicting if the first request succeeded but its response was lost. It recommends considering a resource hash and using distinct ETags for different representations where appropriate. Microsoft API guidelines Dapr’s documentation also notes that ETag-based concurrency support is optional for compatible state stores and that writes without a tag may use last-write-wins behavior. What should happen when a status update conflicts?
A failed guard means the caller’s view is stale, the record no longer exists, or the requested transition no longer applies. Reload the current record and decide whether the operation still makes sense. Do not blindly repeat the old write: doing so can overwrite a newer decision.
- Return a clear conflict signal. In a database-backed application, report a typed conflict or equivalent result when the guarded update affects no rows. For an API using If-Match, return or handle the service’s precondition response, commonly 412.
- Fetch the latest state. Show the current status and, where useful, who changed it or when, subject to the application’s privacy and authorization rules.
- Reevaluate the transition. If the desired change remains valid against the new state, ask the user to confirm or apply a newly validated operation. If it is no longer valid, explain the current state and require a different action.
- Retry only with a fresh guard. Use the newly read expected status, version, or ETag. Couchbase describes refreshing and rerunning the read-update cycle when a change is independent of intervening changes. Couchbase documentation
For an HTTP API, retain the ETag from the read and send it in If-Match with the update. If the server returns 412, fetch the current representation and reevaluate before submitting another conditional request. How do retries behave when the response is lost?
A conflict is straightforward when the client receives a response; an ambiguous network failure is harder. The server may have committed the first request even though the client never received confirmation. Retrying with a marker that changes on every successful write can then produce a conflict even when the retry represents the same intended operation. Microsoft’s API guidance calls out this risk for version-number ETags.
Design retries around the operation’s semantics, not just its HTTP method. Consider whether the request is idempotent, whether the caller can safely read the resulting state to determine whether it already succeeded, and whether an idempotency key or other deduplication mechanism is appropriate. A fresh ETag alone does not prove that the original intent should be applied again; reread and reevaluate the transition.
How should you choose the concurrency boundary?
Optimistic guards are a natural fit when competing updates are infrequent and the application can resolve occasional conflicts. Explicit locking is another option, but it introduces different coordination and operational trade-offs; the documentation does not establish one method as best for every system. Compare the choices against the behavior your users and backend require:
- Guard granularity: should a conflict be raised only when status changed, whenever any record field changed, or whenever the API representation changed?
- Atomicity boundary: can one conditional SQL statement protect the whole transition, or does it require a transaction, row lock, or an API conditional request backed by equivalent server-side atomic behavior?
- Conflict handling: should the interface reject silently, refresh and offer reapplication, or ask users to resolve competing edits explicitly?
- Operational cost: what conflict rate is expected, and can the system support added version storage, locking overhead, and monitoring of failed guards?
Whichever boundary you choose, record enough information to distinguish normal conflicts from missing records and authorization failures without disclosing data improperly. A conflict is not an instruction to force the write: it is evidence that the assumptions behind the caller’s update need to be checked again.
