Yes—you can use Matplotlib in Termux to create and save quantum-diagram images on Android. The most dependable general workflow is to render a figure and save it to a file, rather than assume an interactive plot window will work. For a circuit already represented as a Qiskit QuantumCircuit, Qiskit’s documented circuit_drawer(..., output="mpl") returns a Matplotlib figure. Matplotlib itself handles rendering; the quantum circuit or state data must come from Qiskit or your own calculations.
Understand the three parts of the workflow
Termux provides the Android terminal and Linux-style environment, Python runs your code, and Matplotlib renders the figure. A separate layer supplies the diagram’s meaning: for example, a Qiskit circuit object or state-vector calculations and custom drawing code. Installing Matplotlib does not establish that a quantum SDK, every dependency, or an interactive display backend will work on a particular Android device.
Termux’s official site describes it as an Android terminal emulator and Linux environment that works without rooting, with additional packages available through APT: Termux. That describes the environment, not guaranteed compatibility for every package or device.

IBM documents the circuit drawer’s output choices as text, LaTeX, LaTeX source, and mpl; for mpl, it returns a Matplotlib Figure. The API also accepts styling options, a scale value, an optional Matplotlib axes object, and a filename: IBM Quantum circuit_drawer API.

Set up Python and Matplotlib in Termux

Install Termux from a source maintained by the official project, open it, and update the package index using the package manager available in your installation. Termux’s official description identifies APT as its additional-package manager, but exact package availability may vary; check the current package names on your device rather than assuming a third-party report remains current.

Matplotlib’s standard installation documentation gives the generic Python command
python -m pip install -U matplotlib. This is a documented Python install route, not proof that pip is the best or compatible installation method on every Android/Termux configuration: Matplotlib installation guide. -
Check that Python can import Matplotlib before building the diagram. If the import fails, resolve the environment or installation issue first; the failure does not indicate a problem with the quantum diagram itself.

Save a Qiskit circuit as an image
For a Qiskit circuit, create the circuit object first, then pass it to circuit_drawer with output="mpl". The following is the essential call; qc must already be a valid Qiskit QuantumCircuit.

Saving explicitly with the returned figure’s savefig method makes clear that the output is a file, not an Android pop-up window. You can then open the image with a viewer available on your device.

Qiskit’s circuit drawer depends on Qiskit being installed and usable in that Termux environment. The Matplotlib installation alone does not install or validate Qiskit. Confirm that the SDK and its dependencies are compatible with your target device before choosing this route.

If you have state vectors or gate calculations rather than a Qiskit circuit, Matplotlib can render a figure from data you provide. In this route, you write or choose the calculation and drawing logic: Matplotlib is the renderer, not a quantum simulator or a definition of what the diagram should mean.

A third-party result for this exact topic describes a NumPy-and-Matplotlib approach for Bloch-state diagrams without a full Qiskit installation, but its article page was not retrievable and its implementation could not be independently checked. Treat that as a reported approach, not a verified recipe or guarantee of matching output. No performance, memory, or equivalence claim is established here.
Why saving is safer than interactive display
Matplotlib’s stable documentation identifies Agg, PS, PDF, and SVG as non-interactive backends that work out of the box. These are suitable for generating files without opening a plot window. Its interactive-display behavior depends on the selected backend and whether that backend supports creating a new window; a successful render does not prove that Android or the terminal can display one. Use an image file as the default output in Termux, then check that it exists and open it with an Android app that supports its format. If you specifically need an interactive window, verify backend support in your actual installation rather than assuming desktop instructions transfer unchanged.
Troubleshoot by separating the layers
- Python cannot import Matplotlib: check which Python executable and installation method you used, then verify that Matplotlib was installed for that interpreter.
- The circuit drawer cannot be imported or the circuit call fails: this is a Qiskit/API or dependency issue, distinct from Matplotlib’s ability to render figures. Confirm that Qiskit is installed and that
qcis a valid circuit. - A figure is created but no window appears: save the figure to a file. Interactive display requires a supported backend and display environment.
- LaTeX rendering fails: the documented LaTeX route relies on the system
pdflatexexecutable. Use the Matplotlib output route or text output if that dependency is unavailable. - A custom Bloch or state diagram looks wrong: inspect the calculations, coordinate conventions, and drawing code. Matplotlib renders the data and shapes supplied to it; it does not validate their quantum interpretation.
What is and is not established
The official Matplotlib, IBM Quantum, and Termux documentation supports the separate environment, rendering, and circuit-drawing steps described above. It does not guarantee that every quantum SDK or interactive backend installs or runs on Android. Package names, versions, and backend behavior can change, so validate the software on the intended device. No named study or statistic is established for this workflow.
