Build a Markdown-to-PDF CLI as a pipeline: parse Markdown, produce HTML or an intermediate representation, apply document metadata and styling, then render a PDF. Keep rendering behind a Go interface so you can offer a Pandoc, Chrome/Chromium, or native-renderer backend without tying the CLI to one engine. If you need the broadest established feature set, Pandoc is a practical first backend—but it is not standalone: its PDF output requires LaTeX by default, or another configured PDF engine.

Choose a rendering route before writing the CLI

The renderer determines what users must install and how faithfully the output handles CSS, page breaks, fonts, headers, and other print-layout details. Make that dependency explicit in your command and documentation rather than promising that every backend produces identical PDFs.

Route What the user needs Layout and feature implications Good fit
Pandoc Pandoc plus LaTeX for the default PDF route, or another PDF engine selected with --pdf-engine. Pandoc’s Getting Started guide demonstrates pandoc test1.md -s -o test1.pdf and notes the LaTeX requirement. Pandoc documents support for tables, definition lists, footnotes, citations, math, metadata blocks, code highlighting, and CSS styling for HTML intermediates. The selected PDF engine affects rendering and installation requirements. Feature-rich conversion where installing external tools is acceptable.
Goldmark plus headless Chrome/Chromium A Go Markdown parser and a Chrome/Chromium installation. The Go md2pdf package documents a Markdown-to-HTML-to-PDF workflow that requires Chrome or Chromium. HTML and CSS provide a familiar styling layer; the browser is an external process that must be found and managed. Validate print-specific behavior with the chosen browser version. When HTML/CSS styling and browser-based rendering are priorities.
Native or mostly native renderer The selected Go renderer and any dependencies it documents. The Go render package documents HTML, Chrome, and Typst/Pandoc subpackages; gowkhtmltopdf documents a pure-Go HTML-to-PDF CLI alternative. Capabilities are renderer-specific. The cited Go render package documents custom CSS, themes, cover pages, and TOC options. Check each engine’s actual support before promising browser-equivalent layout. When reducing reliance on a separate browser or LaTeX installation matters more than matching a full browser renderer.

These routes are not interchangeable in deployment or output. Compare them with a representative document containing your real tables, code, images, and page breaks before choosing a default. Do not claim one is faster without a reproducible benchmark on the target machines.

Separate parsing, document preparation, and rendering

Give the CLI a stable internal document flow: input bytes become parsed content, content becomes a styled document, and the selected renderer turns that document into PDF bytes or a file. A renderer interface keeps engine-specific installation checks and error handling out of the parser and command-line layer.

// Parse with the selected Markdown flavor, then add metadata,
// an optional TOC, and CSS in the document-preparation stage.
return nil, errors.New("connect the chosen parser and document builder")
}

This is an architectural seam, not a complete converter: connect a parser and renderer adapter before presenting the tool as usable. Goldmark is one Go Markdown option identified for an HTML-first workflow. Keep its extension configuration in one place so features such as GFM tables, footnotes, or metadata are deliberate rather than accidental. The actual support depends on the parser and extensions you select.

Use a renderer factory or explicit selection to choose the backend. For instance, a Pandoc adapter can invoke the executable with an explicit input format, output path, and optional --pdf-engine; a Chrome adapter can submit prepared HTML to a managed browser process. Keep argument construction in the adapter, pass arguments as an argument list rather than through a shell, and surface the executable’s diagnostic output when conversion fails.

Design the CLI around predictable inputs and errors

Start with one input file and one output file. Explicit paths are less surprising than inferred ones; extension inference can be a convenience, but should not obscure which format or engine the command selected.

mdpdf --input report.md --output report.pdf --engine pandoc
mdpdf --input report.md --output report.pdf --engine chrome --css print.css --toc

Those flags are a recommended interface, not flags supplied by a particular library. Keep the supported engine names and options documented by your own CLI.

  • Input and output: provide explicit input and output flags; reject missing input, unsupported formats, and an output path that conflicts with the input.
  • Engine: offer a clear engine selector if more than one backend is supported. Report the selected engine and its resolved executable or runtime in verbose diagnostics.
  • Styling and structure: consider CSS or theme selection, a TOC option, and metadata flags such as document title. Define which backends honor each option.
  • Automation: add stdin/stdout only if each backend can support it cleanly. Directory and glob conversion can follow after single-file behavior, error reporting, and output naming are reliable.
  • Debugging: a verbose mode that retains intermediate HTML makes parser, CSS, and renderer problems easier to isolate. The md2pdf documentation describes an intermediate HTML step.

Return actionable errors. For a missing executable, identify the required engine and suggest installing or configuring it. For a failed conversion, distinguish parser errors from renderer errors and include useful process diagnostics without dumping sensitive document contents by default.

Decide which Markdown and PDF features to support

Write down the Markdown flavor and document features your CLI promises. “Supports Markdown” is too vague for documents that rely on tables, footnotes, math, metadata, or syntax-highlighted code.

  • Core structure: headings, paragraphs, lists, links, and images.
  • Extended Markdown: specify whether tables, footnotes, definition lists, citations, and metadata are accepted, and whether they are parser extensions or renderer features.
  • Code: define fenced-code behavior and whether highlighting is available in the selected pipeline. Pandoc documents code highlighting; that does not establish identical behavior for another backend.
  • Math: decide whether mathematical notation is required and test it with the chosen parser and PDF engine. Support may depend on external rendering components.
  • Print layout: test CSS, images, fonts, headers and footers, TOCs, and page-break behavior in each engine. The Go render package documents custom CSS, themes, cover pages, and TOC options, but options and fidelity vary by backend.

A feature should be considered supported only after an end-to-end test confirms that the parser preserves it and the selected renderer emits it acceptably in the PDF. Keep a small fixture document for each promised feature and run it whenever parser or engine versions change.

Make security and reproducibility explicit

Markdown conversion can expose more than formatting. Embedded HTML, scripts, remote images, and local-file references can cause a renderer to load content or access resources beyond the document. Define a policy for each rather than inheriting defaults you have not reviewed.

  • Network access: decide whether remote URLs are allowed and whether network loading is disabled by default. If remote resources are enabled, explain that output can vary with resource availability and content changes.
  • Local assets: define how relative image and stylesheet paths resolve, and whether access outside the input directory is permitted. Restrict file access when converting untrusted documents.
  • HTML and JavaScript: decide whether raw HTML is accepted and whether scripts execute. Treat untrusted input as potentially active content, especially in browser-backed conversion.
  • Process invocation: use safe argument passing, apply timeouts, and capture renderer failures. Do not interpolate document text into shell commands.
  • Versions and fonts: pin parser and renderer versions when repeatable output matters, document font discovery, and include engine versions in diagnostics. Different fonts, engines, or versions can change line wrapping and pagination.
  • Licensing and redistribution: verify the licenses and distribution terms for the Go packages and every required or bundled engine before shipping binaries or installers.

The gowkhtmltopdf project specifically calls out security considerations for remote or untrusted HTML. Review the chosen engine’s own security guidance as part of the backend decision.

Test installation and troubleshoot by pipeline stage

The command cannot find its renderer

Check whether the selected backend is installed and discoverable in the user’s environment. For Pandoc, remember that the default PDF path also needs LaTeX; selecting another PDF engine changes that requirement rather than eliminating all external dependencies. For the HTML-first Chrome route, verify that the expected Chrome or Chromium executable is installed and that the CLI can locate it.

The PDF is missing Markdown features

Determine whether the feature was lost during parsing, document preparation, or rendering. Inspect retained intermediate HTML when available. If a table or footnote is absent there, review parser flavor and extension configuration; if it is present in HTML but wrong in the PDF, investigate renderer support and print styling.

Images, fonts, or page breaks differ across machines

Check resource paths, font availability, renderer version, and whether remote loading is allowed. Relative assets should resolve according to a documented rule. Pinning versions and testing representative documents improves repeatability, but does not make different rendering engines identical.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The PDF differs between engines

Treat each backend as its own output target. Compare the same test document across supported engines and document differences in CSS, pagination, math, or headers instead of implying that the engine selector is merely a performance choice.

Build the smallest reliable first release

  1. Choose the first backend. Pick Pandoc for an established feature-rich route with external dependencies, or an HTML-first/native route when its installation and layout trade-offs fit your users.
  2. Support one Markdown file. Define the parser flavor, output path, and behavior for unsupported syntax.
  3. Add one renderer adapter. Keep process discovery, invocation, timeouts, and diagnostics behind the renderer interface.
  4. Test real documents. Include code, tables, images, links, and any required TOC, math, or page-break behavior.
  5. Document prerequisites and policies. State what must be installed, how assets resolve, and how remote content and raw HTML are handled.
  6. Expand carefully. Add themes, additional engines, stdin/stdout, and batch processing only when their behavior and errors are clear.
