A cellular data logger can run for years on a battery, but the lifetime has to be demonstrated for its complete workload and deployment—not inferred from a modem’s sleep-current figure. Budget sensing, processing, registration, data transfers, network updates, retries, idle reachability, temperature, battery aging, and peak-current capability, then validate the design on the intended hardware and network.

Start by defining what the logger must do

Before choosing a battery or radio, write down the logger’s operating contract. These requirements determine how often the device wakes, how long it may be unreachable, and how much energy each reporting cycle can consume.

  • Measurement: sensor type, warm-up time, sampling interval, and any local processing or threshold checks.
  • Reporting: reporting interval, payload size, transport protocol, and whether readings can be batched.
  • Downlink: commands the device must receive and the maximum acceptable delay before it receives them.
  • Deployment: countries and carriers, expected signal quality, fixed or mobile operation, antenna placement, and enclosure.
  • Environment and service: operating-temperature range, target maintenance interval, and whether batteries can be replaced.
  • Failure handling: behavior when registration fails, a report is not acknowledged, or the device loses coverage.

Separate energy spent on measurement and local processing from energy spent on cellular activity. Include modem startup and network attachment if the device may power down the modem or lose its registration; those costs can be significant alongside the data transfer itself.

Build an event-based energy budget

For each recurring or occasional event, measure or obtain current, voltage, duration, and frequency. Add the sensor’s warm-up and sample, MCU active and sleep states, modem boot, registration, connection setup, transmit and receive, acknowledgments, retries, periodic network updates, and time spent in each idle or power-saving state. Calculate charge as current multiplied by duration, then sum each event according to how often it occurs during a representative period.

Illustrative nRF9151 LTE-M event Example charge How to use the figure
Data transfer to cloud server 87 mC Platform and scenario example from Nordic Semiconductor documentation accessed in 2026; not a universal LTE-M transfer cost.
Network and server connection initialization 325 mC Platform and scenario example from Nordic Semiconductor documentation accessed in 2026; include comparable setup costs when your device performs them.
Tracking Area Update (TAU) transfer 97 mC Platform and scenario example from Nordic Semiconductor documentation accessed in 2026; account for network updates that occur in your deployment.

Convert charge to milliamp-hours by dividing millicoulombs by 3,600. As a deliberately limited illustration, suppose a logger performs one transfer and one connection initialization every day, plus one TAU transfer each week, using the event values in the table. That adds up to (7 × (87 + 325) + 97) = 2,981 mC per week, or about 0.83 mAh per week and 43 mAh per year. This is only the contribution of those example radio events: it excludes sleep, sensing, processing, extra network activity, weak-signal behavior, and retries, so it is not a battery-life estimate.

For a continuous background load, convert average current to charge over the same period. For example, a constant 1 µA uses 8.76 mAh in a 365-day year. A nominally small background current can matter when it flows continuously; do not omit regulator quiescent current, sensors left powered, or other board-level loads.

Compare the total budget with usable battery energy at the expected temperature and discharge state, then keep a reserve for variation and service needs. Battery capacity alone is not enough: the source and power path must also support the modem’s transmission and registration pulses without the system voltage falling below its operating limit.

Choose how reachable the logger must be

Power Saving Mode (PSM) and extended Discontinuous Reception (eDRX) address different balances between energy use and downlink availability. Microchip describes PSM as a 3GPP feature that allows a module to reduce power by registering on a PSM-supporting LTE network and then entering a configured power-saving state. In PSM, the device does not regularly monitor paging while dormant, so it is generally suited to a logger that can remain unavailable for downlink and reconnect at planned events.

With eDRX, the device has periodic paging opportunities. That can suit an application that needs scheduled chances to receive downlink messages and can accept the resulting latency. More frequent opportunities may use more energy than a deeper dormant state. In either case, verify the timers actually negotiated and the operator’s support in every target market; a configured value does not by itself prove that the deployed network will provide the expected behavior.

Select LTE-M or NB-IoT for the deployment

Neither radio is universally the lower-power or better-coverage choice for every logger. Compare the actual carriers, countries, bands, installation locations, and module options you can use. Then check the requirements that directly affect the workload:

  • Mobility: determine whether devices stay fixed or must move between cells and retain service.
  • Payload and throughput: check that the radio and network support the data size and transfer pattern you need.
  • Latency and downlink: match paging and response expectations to the logger’s reachability contract.
  • Coverage and antenna: evaluate service at the installed location, including inside the final enclosure.
  • Power behavior: measure the chosen module’s real registration, connection, transfer, and idle behavior with the intended network.
  • Availability and approval: confirm module bands, carrier support, certifications, and regional availability for the deployment.

For example, the Murata Type 1SC datasheet describes that module and revision as supporting LTE Cat M1 and NB1, PSM and eDRX, an external antenna, and specified certifications. Those details are not a substitute for confirming that the specific module revision, bands, firmware, SIM or eSIM arrangement, and carrier fit your deployment.

Size the battery and pulse-support path together

Check battery capacity under the logger’s actual temperature and load, not just a headline capacity. Review the discharge curve, self-discharge, shelf life, internal resistance, pulse-current limit, end-of-life voltage, physical size, and any applicable safety or shipping constraints. A battery that contains enough total energy may still fail to deliver a short, high-current modem event.

Confirm that the regulator can sustain the peak load and keep the modem input above its minimum voltage. If the battery cannot directly supply the pulse, a capacitor may supply some of its transient energy. Its required value depends on the event’s charge and duration, the battery’s contribution, converter efficiency, output voltage, and the minimum system voltage; it cannot be selected reliably from capacity alone. Observe the supply rail with an oscilloscope or power analyzer during registration and transmission to catch droop or resets.

Estimate life without turning a model into a promise

A useful estimate adds recurring energy across a known interval, adjusts battery capacity for real conditions, and includes a reserve. In simplified terms:

Estimated service life ≈ usable battery energy ÷ average energy consumed per unit time.

For a charge-based budget, sum each event’s charge multiplied by its frequency, add continuous loads over that interval, and compare the result with the battery’s usable charge after temperature, aging, and reserve allowances. Re-run the calculation for plausible variations in signal quality, reporting frequency, and retries. If one assumption changes materially, the lifetime estimate can change with it.

Published product figures illustrate why settings matter rather than establish a general expectation. Efento’s NB-IoT logger documentation says its standard pack of three AA cells totals 6,300 mAh and claims “up to 10 years or 195,000 transmissions” under its own product conditions. Its table varies expected life with transmission schedule and signal condition, and the documentation identifies temperature, signal, sensor load, registrations, and firmware updates as factors. Treat that as a vendor-specific product estimate, not a transferable guarantee for a different logger.

Nordic Semiconductor’s 2018 analyst briefing also uses illustrative figures for different activity contexts, including approximately 15 µA, 0.5 mA, and 150 mA, and shows a 15-year battery-life illustration for one LTE-M profile specifying 23 dBm, 3.7 V, and 2,700 mAh. These are presentation examples tied to their stated contexts, not a prediction for an unspecified device.

Reduce avoidable consumption

  • Batch readings when the application’s latency requirements allow fewer transmissions.
  • Keep payloads efficient and avoid unnecessary connection setup or attach-and-detach cycles.
  • Limit downlink polling and server-side configuration changes that trigger extra radio activity.
  • Use local thresholds for urgent conditions when feasible, while preserving required reporting and alert behavior.
  • Implement retry and backoff logic for dead zones so repeated failures do not create uncontrolled radio activity.
  • Include sensor and processor energy in the optimization; the modem is not the only load.
  • Test the final enclosure and antenna placement, because a poor RF path can increase radio activity and retries.

Validate on the final hardware and network

  1. Instrument the power path. Measure the complete device and, where possible, the modem rail so both total energy and peak droop are visible.
  2. Record representative events. Capture sensor startup and sampling, MCU work, modem boot, registration, connection, transfer, receive, updates, and sleep residence.
  3. Exercise deployment conditions. Test the intended SIM or eSIM, firmware, carrier, antenna, enclosure, reporting schedule, temperature range, and representative signal conditions.
  4. Include failures. Measure poor coverage, lost acknowledgments, retries, and recovery rather than calculating only a successful report.
  5. Update the budget. Use measured event frequencies and charges to revise usable-capacity and reserve assumptions, then confirm the desired service interval with margin.
