Its headline changes were a new 3-D rendering engine, weather effects, and an integrated scene editor intended to make complex ADAS scenarios easier to build and inspect. The announcement attributes a steady 60 images per second on complex scenes to the engine, but does not state the publication year or the conditions behind that figure.
What MotionDesk does in an ADAS workflow
MotionDesk visualizes simulated environments and events so engineers can inspect what is happening in a virtual scene alongside the simulation’s signals and models. That is useful for ADAS work because a camera-based system’s response depends on visible details—such as road layout, traffic signs, weather, and other objects—that are difficult to understand from signal traces alone.
MotionDesk is part of a dSPACE toolchain that includes ASM and ModelDesk. dSPACE Release 7.3 describes using those tools to define multilane virtual roads, place traffic signs, and use a lane-recognition sensor model to evaluate recognition in real time. The release also says the models support hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation and special offline Operator Versions. The visualization helps make the scenario and its effects inspectable; it should not be mistaken for a standalone ADAS sensor or a complete vehicle model.
What changed in the revised version
More detailed 3-D rendering
The announcement describes a revised rendering engine that produces more detailed, realistic visualization and can render complex scenes at a steady 60 images per second. This is a vendor-stated figure, not an independently documented benchmark; the accessible announcement does not specify the test system, scene configuration, or publication year.

- Diameter: about 270 mm.Perfect replacement steering wheel for the old wheel on your go-kart or ATV.
- Easy to Install: With three mounting holes, which is easy to install. convenient and save your time.
- Material: Made of metal material with PU foam around the outside, durable, wear-resistant and long life time.
- Features: The surface is cover with soft pu foam which bring you a comfortable feel when driving, enjoy your driving time.
- Multi-application: Classic and universal steering wheel for ATV, Go Kart and so on. Fits for 150cc -250cc engines.
Weather effects
The version can simulate changing weather conditions, including rain and snow. The announcement also mentioned realistic shadows as a feature expected in future releases. That was roadmap language at the time, not evidence that shadows were included in this revision or are available in a particular current version.
A unified interface and scene editor
The revised interface brings visualization functions together. In the 3-D Scene Editor, users can create and navigate scenes, find objects in a 3-D library using a browser or keyword search, place them in the scene, and edit their size, position, and rotation. An overview window helps with navigation in large scenes, while grouping objects can make more complex arrangements easier to manage.

Users can also import their own COLLADA- or VRML2-compliant objects. Existing projects can run in the new MotionDesk, with a choice between conventional and new 3-D views, so adopting the revised visualization does not necessarily mean rebuilding a project from scratch.
How the features support camera-based testing
A virtual road, traffic signs, and lane markings give a camera-recognition scenario visible inputs that can be varied and examined. In dSPACE Release 7.3, the vendor describes setting up systems to test camera-based traffic-sign recognition with MotionDesk’s 3-D animation software, alongside a lane-recognition sensor model and virtual roads. This connects the visualization to a model-based test workflow: construct the environment, run the simulation, and assess the modeled recognition behavior.

MotionDesk’s role is to show and help author the visual environment. The cited release description assigns recognition evaluation to the sensor model and broader simulation setup; it does not establish that MotionDesk alone performs camera-image processing or validates the performance of a physical production camera.
How MotionDesk fits with HIL and test automation
In HIL testing, a real electronic control unit interacts with a real-time simulation. dSPACE Release 7.3 states that the relevant models support HIL as well as special offline Operator Versions. That establishes compatibility within the dSPACE workflow, but does not mean every MotionDesk feature or project configuration is automatically available in every HIL setup.

AutomationDesk provides a separate test-automation layer. An August 11, 2015 report on AutomationDesk 5.0 says it added signal-based ECU test descriptions, support for efficient testing of complex camera-based ADAS, and remote control of MotionDesk while automatically importing customer-defined test scenarios. The report also describes ASAM XIL support and automated testing across model-in-the-loop, software-in-the-loop, and hardware-in-the-loop stages. These are AutomationDesk capabilities reported for that release, rather than features to attribute to MotionDesk itself.

The clearest dated vendor feature record for this revision family is dSPACE Release 7.3, which lists MotionDesk 3.0 with new rendering technology, more realistic 3-D objects, an integrated Scene Editor, an overview window for large scenes, and a drag-and-drop object library. The separate announcement behind the 60-images-per-second claim has no publication year stated on its accessible page, so the claim should not be assigned a more precise date based on that page alone.

A later milestone must be kept distinct: dSPACE Release 2016-B lists MotionDesk 3.9 as a native 64-bit version and adds optical-path simulation for behind-sensor stimulation, including lens distortion, chromatic aberration, and vignetting. Those effects show later development toward sensor realism, but they are not documented as features of MotionDesk 3.0.
What the announcement establishes—and what it does not
- Established: the revised version introduced more realistic 3-D visualization, rain and snow simulation, integrated scene-authoring tools, object grouping and import, and a choice of old or new view for existing projects.
- Established in related dSPACE release material: the wider ASM/ModelDesk/MotionDesk workflow can support virtual-road, lane-recognition, and traffic-sign scenarios, including HIL and offline use.
- Not established by these release descriptions: current product availability, licensing, pricing, compatibility with a particular modern dSPACE release, or a benchmark proving 60 images per second on a specified configuration.
For teams evaluating the software, the practical questions are whether the required road and sensor models are available in their specific toolchain version, whether their existing scenes and imported assets are compatible, and which offline or HIL configuration supports the test they intend to run.
