The best application for making a geographical map depends on what you need it to do. For desktop analysis and detailed cartography, start with QGIS; for a managed team GIS, consider ArcGIS Online; and for custom interactive maps inside a website or app, look at Mapbox. Simpler projects may need only uMap or Google My Maps.

Which map-making application should you choose?

First decide whether you need a standalone map, a GIS workspace for analysis, a shared cloud project, or a map embedded in a product. The options below range from free desktop software to hosted platforms and developer tools. Their strengths are different, so “best” depends on your workflow, collaboration needs, and level of control.

Application Best fit Deployment Primary strength
QGIS Desktop GIS and detailed cartography Windows, Mac, Linux Broad analysis and mapping capabilities in open-source software
ArcGIS Online Organizations and managed team GIS Hosted web GIS Collaboration, data management, analysis, and connected workflows
Mapbox Developers building custom maps into products Web and mobile SDKs and APIs Custom interactive maps and location visualizations
CARTO Cloud data teams doing spatial analytics Cloud-native platform Spatial analysis connected to cloud data warehouses
Felt Teams mapping together in a browser Hosted browser platform Collaborative online mapping workspace
Kepler.gl Interactive exploration of location data Open-source web application Geospatial data visualization
uMap or Google My Maps Basic shareable maps Lightweight online mapping tools Pins, routes, and simple layers

1. QGIS: Best overall desktop GIS and free power option

QGIS is the strongest starting point if you want a full desktop GIS without buying a proprietary desktop license. It runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux, and supports creating, editing, visualizing, analyzing, and publishing geospatial information. Its official overview describes tools for digitizing points, lines, polygons, and meshes, broad data-format support, web services, and repeatable workflows. See the QGIS project overview.

QGIS suits detailed print maps, spatial analysis, and work that benefits from repeatable processes. The project says its community has developed more than 2,000 plugins; that is a project page figure accessed in 2026, not a guarantee that every plugin is maintained or appropriate for a given workflow. Consult the QGIS features page for the project’s description of its capabilities.

  • Directory of U.S. national parks simplifies navigation to entrances, visitor centers and landmarks within the parks
  • Choose it when: you need desktop analysis, fine control over cartography, or a flexible open-source GIS.
  • Consider another option when: your priority is a ready-made shared cloud workspace or a developer SDK for embedding maps.

2. ArcGIS Online: Best for managed team GIS

ArcGIS Online is Esri’s hosted, web-based GIS for mapping, analytics, data management, and collaboration. Esri describes support for 2D and 3D maps, common geospatial files, spatial analysis, secure sharing, dashboards, configurable apps, field workflows, and offline synchronization. Its ArcGIS Online overview is the place to check the current product scope.

It is a good fit when an organization needs people to work across desktop, web, and mobile while centralizing access, sharing, and data workflows. The trade-off is that this is a managed service rather than a standalone open-source desktop application, so assess its current plans, administration model, integrations, and data requirements before committing. Esri’s product page lists a 21-day free trial as accessed in 2026; confirm availability and terms on the current ArcGIS Online page.

  • Consider another option when: you want a lightweight personal map or need to avoid a hosted, plan-based service.

3. Mapbox: Best for developers embedding custom maps

Mapbox is built for teams adding maps and location features to websites, mobile apps, and other products. It offers web and mobile SDKs, APIs, custom styles, static map images, vector-tile tools, and data-pipeline capabilities. Example application patterns include store locators, dashboards, logistics, media, games, and indoor maps. The Mapbox product site describes its developer-focused mapping services.

Choose Mapbox when branded appearance and integration into your own interface matter more than a ready-to-use GIS workspace. It is not the simplest choice for someone who only wants to drop a few pins on a map: implementation requires development work, and usage-based billing makes it important to understand the applicable pricing and usage rules for your project.

  • Choose it when: developers need custom interactive maps as part of a web or mobile product.
  • Consider another option when: you need a no-code shared map or a general-purpose desktop analysis environment.

4. CARTO: Best for cloud-native spatial analytics

CARTO is worth considering when a data team wants to run spatial analytics alongside data held in cloud warehouses. Its comparison guide distinguishes cloud-native analytics platforms from desktop GIS and developer libraries, which helps clarify where it fits: it is aimed at data workflows rather than simple map sharing. Read CARTO’s comparison of GIS approaches.

Before choosing CARTO, verify current plan limits, supported connections, and the specific capabilities included in the plan you would use. Those details can determine whether it fits a production analytics workflow.

5. Felt: Best for collaborative browser mapping

Felt presents itself as a cloud-native GIS and online mapping platform. Its browser-first approach makes it a candidate for teams that want to work together on maps and share them without centering the workflow on locally installed desktop software. See the Felt product site for its current feature and plan information.

Check the live product details for the collaboration, permission, and export limits that matter to your team. Those specifics should shape the decision, especially if the map is part of a formal or recurring workflow.

6. Kepler.gl: Best for open-source interactive data visualization

Kepler.gl is an open-source web geospatial visualization application for exploring location data interactively. It is a useful option for analysts who want to turn geographic datasets into visual explorations, rather than adopt a full enterprise GIS with broader management and governance workflows. The Kepler.gl project site introduces the application.

Its visualization focus is also its boundary: if you need extensive GIS analysis, organizational administration, or a managed collaboration environment, compare it with tools designed for those jobs.

7. uMap or Google My Maps: Best for simple shareable maps

For pins, routes, and basic layers, a lightweight mapping tool may be enough. uMap is an OpenStreetMap-based option for making and sharing maps; Google My Maps is another familiar choice for simple online maps. A comparison of digital mapping tools describes uMap as an easier route to shareable OpenStreetMap-based maps. See the digital mapping tools comparison.

These tools are suited to straightforward maps for trips, community projects, or simple presentations. They are not substitutes for a GIS when you need deeper spatial analysis, formal governance, or custom embedding in your own application.

How to choose the right map-making app

  • For analysis and cartographic control: choose QGIS for a desktop GIS, or evaluate ArcGIS Online if a managed organizational environment is important.
  • For team collaboration: compare ArcGIS Online for managed GIS workflows with Felt for a browser-first collaborative workspace.
  • For cloud warehouse analytics: evaluate CARTO and confirm that its current plan and connections match your data workflow.
  • For an interactive map inside an app or site: consider Mapbox if you have developer capacity and can manage usage-based billing.
  • For visual exploration of location data: try Kepler.gl when a visualization-centered workflow is sufficient.
  • For a basic map to share: use uMap or Google My Maps rather than taking on a full GIS platform unnecessarily.

Before settling on a tool, check where data is stored, who can access it, whether offline or mobile use is required, what formats you need to import and export, how much styling control you need, and how pricing scales. Desktop software, hosted GIS, and embedded SDKs solve different problems; a map’s intended audience and maintenance needs matter as much as its first draft.
