Broadcom announced its StrataXGS Tomahawk Ethernet switch chipset on September 24, 2014, for cloud-scale data centers. Its 3.2 Tbps switching capacity and 25Gbps-per-lane design aimed to support dense 25G and 50G Ethernet networks, while programmable packet processing targeted software-defined networking (SDN) functions. Tomahawk is switch silicon for data-center equipment—not a plug-in adapter for a typical PC.
What Tomahawk brought to data-center switching
Network World reported that Tomahawk delivered 3.2 Tbps of switching capacity, equivalent to 32 100G ports. Broadcom also described a 128-port 25GbE configuration. These are different ways to describe the chip’s capacity and port configuration, not a claim that every deployment uses all those port types simultaneously. Network World’s 2014 announcement coverage and Light Reading’s 2014 report provide the historical figures.
The design used 25Gbps-per-lane interconnects. That lane speed was intended to make 25G and 50G Ethernet networks practical alongside higher-capacity 100G links, giving data-center operators more options for scaling bandwidth than relying only on 10G links. Broadcom was described at the time as a founder of the 25 Gigabit Ethernet Consortium, while IEEE had formed a 25G study group in response to industry interest. Later Broadcom documentation identifies 25GbE compliance with IEEE 802.3by and the 25G Ethernet Consortium. Network World and Broadcom’s standards documentation describe that context.
How Broadcom targeted SDN workloads
Tomahawk’s packet processors were described as configurable for flow processing and data-center functions such as security, network virtualization, measurement and monitoring, congestion management, and traffic engineering. The goal was to let software-defined network controls use the switch hardware for packet handling rather than treating the device as a fixed-function forwarding box. Broadcom cited OpenFlow 1.3+, VXLAN, NVGRE, MPLS, and Shortest Path Bridging support, with control-plane access through common software APIs. Network World’s 2014 report lists these capabilities.

- [ Ultra-Fast 2.5g/10G Connectivity ] This Ethernet switch features 8×2.5GbE ports and 2×10GbE ports. Ports 1–8 support 2.5G/1G/100Mbps, while ports 9–10 support 10G/5G/2.5G/1G/100Mbps, delivering high-speed, stable connections for 10Gb NAS, servers, gaming PCs, WiFi 6 / WiFi 7 devices, 4K/8K media streaming, and home office networks.
- [ True Wire-Speed Forwarding, Zero Bottlenecks ] All ports support wire-speed forwarding with a 60Gbps switching capacity and 44.64Mpps forwarding rate, ensuring smooth, low-latency data transmission even under heavy multi-device traffic.
- [ Plug & Play, Fully Unmanaged Design ] No configuration required. The switch supports auto-negotiation and auto MDI/MDIX, automatically adjusting speed and transmission mode for each connected device—ideal for home labs, small offices, and prosumers.
- [ Fanless Silent Operation with LED Status Indicators ] Durable metal housing with a fanless design ensures quiet operation. LED indicators clearly display power and port activity for easy monitoring in home and office network setups.
- [ Flexible Installation for Home & Office Networks ] Supports desktop or wall-mount installation and operates reliably across a wide temperature range, making it ideal for wireless APs, NAS setups, PCs, and small office network deployments.
Broadcom later claimed that TruFlow-enabled controller designs could improve application or server performance by up to 50%. That is a vendor-stated maximum for specified designs, not a guaranteed result for every Tomahawk deployment. Broadcom’s 2015 announcement describes the claim.
How to compare 25GbE hardware
Tomahawk describes switch silicon; a server adapter solves a different part of a network build. When evaluating a 25GbE deployment, compare the whole path rather than port speed alone:

A current Broadcom server-adapter example
Broadcom’s N425G is a quad-port 25GbE PCIe OCP 3.0 adapter, rather than a switch chip. Broadcom says it performs Geneve, VXLAN, and NVGRE processing on-chip and supports SDN/NFV. For specified tunneling workloads, the company claims up to 5× throughput and up to 90% lower CPU utilization versus software-only processing. These are vendor-stated maximums for those workloads, not universal results. Check Broadcom’s current product information and confirm regional availability with a seller before planning a purchase.
