3Dfx’s Voodoo was a family of graphics boards built to accelerate 3D games, while Glide was the graphics API designed around capabilities specific to those boards. Voodoo cards helped make dedicated 3D acceleration a visible part of PC gaming; Glide gave game developers a direct way to use it. Their compatibility and specifications belong to the hardware and software era in which they were sold—not to modern PCs by default.

What was 3Dfx’s Voodoo?

Voodoo was not one card but a series of 3D graphics products from 3Dfx. The family changed over time, so “a Voodoo card” does not identify a single chip design, memory arrangement, or interface. The first Voodoo generation and later products such as Voodoo2, Banshee, Voodoo4, and Voodoo5 belong to different points in that product history.

One reason Voodoo mattered to game players was its relationship with Glide: the boards provided the hardware, and Glide provided software developers with an API tailored to that hardware. That close fit could make it practical for a game to use Voodoo-specific features, but it also meant Glide was not a universal graphics interface for every maker’s hardware.

Why did Glide matter?

Glide was a 3Dfx graphics API designed to take advantage of features specific to Voodoo boards. GameSpot reported that its first release came in 1996. In its April 27, 2000 report on 3dfx opening Glide’s source code, GameSpot described a changing environment in which game support for OpenGL was increasing and DirectX 7 was regarded as an industry-standard API.

On April 27, 2000, 3dfx released Glide source code and made hardware specifications public for several chipsets, including Voodoo Graphics, Voodoo Rush, Voodoo2, and Banshee, according to GameSpot. The article quoted 3dfx CTO and executive vice president Scott Sellers: “By providing Glide and programming specifications to the development community, we once again demonstrate our commitment to Open Source technology.” This was a company statement about that release, not evidence that every Voodoo product or all of its software was open source.

The practical distinction is important: Glide’s historical role was to let compatible games target 3dfx hardware through a purpose-built API. It should not be confused with a guarantee that an old Glide game will run on a current computer. Present-day compatibility depends on the game, the operating system, drivers, and any compatibility layer or other software being used; the period documentation does not establish support across today’s systems.

How did Voodoo4 and Voodoo5 differ?

The preserved 3dfx FAQ describes the later VSA-100-based Voodoo4/5 generation as scaling the number of graphics processors across products. The distinctions below are limited to what that company-era FAQ establishes; they are not a complete comparison of every board or a performance ranking.

Family or product Processors per board Other detail established in the FAQ
Voodoo4 family One VSA-100 processor The Voodoo4 4500 had a PCI version.
Voodoo5 products Two or four VSA-100 processors The FAQ describes memory allocation and SLI operation; Voodoo5 had PCI versions.

These are period company descriptions of particular product families. The FAQ’s reference to multiple processors on one board, memory allocation, and SLI is useful for understanding the design, but it does not by itself establish how a given Voodoo4 or Voodoo5 compares with another generation in a named game or test.

What did 3dfx say about Glide compatibility?

The preserved FAQ said Voodoo4/5 products supported existing Glide titles and Glide 2.x and 3.x. That is historical compatibility information for those products as described by 3dfx; it does not mean every title worked flawlessly, nor does it promise that the same games will work on a modern computer. A specific game’s behavior depends on its release, its Glide implementation, and the software environment in which it is run.

The same FAQ listed minimum CPU requirements and original retail prices. Those figures describe the products’ original period context, not current system requirements or present-day buying prices, so they are not useful as modern purchase guidance.

Where can you find period technical documentation?

The 3dfx Technical Reference archive is a directory of historical documentation, not a performance database. Its catalog includes a Glide2 SDK dated January 1997, Glide3 materials from 1998, a Voodoo1 reference dated December 1, 1999, and later source-code packages. These documents can help identify what developers and hardware users could consult at the time; undocumented benchmarks or broad claims about performance should not be inferred from the archive’s listings.

What can be said confidently about Voodoo’s legacy?

The available period material supports a clear, bounded account: Voodoo was a multi-generation family of 3D graphics boards; Glide was a 3dfx API designed for Voodoo-specific capabilities; and by the Voodoo4/5 generation, VSA-100 products scaled from one processor to two or four on a board. GameSpot’s 2000 report also documents 3dfx’s release of Glide source code and specifications for several chipsets.

Those sources do not establish a reliable sales total, shipment figure, or market-share statistic. In particular, the frequently repeated claim that 3dfx reached 85% market share lacks a sufficiently identified source in the material reviewed here and should not be treated as fact. Likewise, no performance ranking across Voodoo generations is justified without a named test, system configuration, and date.
