The MakerBot Replicator 2 is a discontinued, single-extruder desktop 3D printer. MakerBot’s 2013 manual documents it for 1.75 mm PLA filament, with blue masking tape as a suitable print surface. If you already own one, the manual provides a basic setup and maintenance path; if you are considering a used unit, treat its condition and parts situation as questions to verify with the seller.
Is the MakerBot Replicator 2 still supported or sold?
No longer as a current MakerBot product. MakerBot’s Replicator series page says the series has been discontinued after 10 years and identifies the Sketch series as its successor. That describes MakerBot’s lineup; it does not establish whether used machines are available, whether parts remain in stock, or what software support is available today.
The Replicator 2 is a different model from the Replicator 2X and later Replicator printers. The material and specifications below refer specifically to the Replicator 2.
What filament does a Replicator 2 use?
MakerBot’s Replicator 2 user manual identifies MakerBot PLA filament as the material for making objects on the printer. Its specifications list a filament diameter of 1.75 mm. When looking for filament, use those documented material and diameter details as a starting point, and check the product listing and the condition of the specific printer. The manual does not establish that every PLA formulation or spool arrangement will work.

The manual also describes blue masking tape as a suitable build surface for PLA prints. It is a documented setup option, not a claim that one particular tape is required for every print.
What are the Replicator 2’s published specifications?
MakerBot’s 2012 feature sheet gives the following figures. They are manufacturer-published claims, not independently verified results:

How do you set up and level a Replicator 2?
MakerBot’s manual describes a hands-on workflow: install the build plate and filament guide, level the build platform, load PLA, and print a test object from the SD card. It also explains preparing models with MakerWare. Follow the model-specific manual rather than assuming instructions for another Replicator apply.
Level the build platform
The manual’s leveling procedure is manual. Follow its sequence and adjustments for the build platform; a properly leveled platform is part of the documented setup. The source does not establish an automatic leveling feature for this model.

- Complete Spool: This white PLA filament provides 1KG/2.2 lb of printing material with an approximate length of 340m, suitable for prototypes, decorative models, functional parts, crafts and everyday printing projects.
- Quality PLA: Made from plant-derived PLA material, the filament offers low odor, smooth melt flow and dependable layer adhesion while producing white prints with a clean, consistent surface finish.
- Precise Diameter: Consistent 1.75mm diameter with +/- 0.02mm dimensional accuracy supports stable feeding and even extrusion while helping reduce clogs, bubbles, uneven layers and printing interruptions.
- Neatly Wound: Uniform winding helps minimize tangles and line crossing, while the recommended 195-220°C nozzle temperature and 40-50mm/s print speed support smooth, reliable printing.
- Customer Support: Please confirm the filament diameter, spool dimensions and recommended print settings before ordering; contact us if you have questions about setup, storage or product quality.
Load filament and run a test print
Use the manual’s loading instructions for PLA, then run its SD-card test object before moving on to your own models. This gives you a way to check the printer’s basic operation using the documented workflow.
Maintain the printer
The manual includes maintenance guidance for lubrication and cleaning the drive gear. Consult its steps for the appropriate points and procedure rather than applying generic maintenance advice from a different printer.

What should you check before buying a used Replicator 2?
Because the model is discontinued, do not assume official parts, software support, or a particular level of seller support will be available. Verify practical details directly before paying; current inventory, used prices, and aftermarket compatibility are not established here.
- Ask the seller to demonstrate that the printer powers on and can complete a print.
- Confirm what is included, such as the build plate, filament guide, power supply, and any accessories.
- Inspect the printer’s condition and ask whether the platform, extruder, and drive gear operate correctly.
- Check the availability and compatibility of any parts the machine may need rather than assuming replacements are easy to source.
- For filament, search for 1.75 mm PLA and verify the listing details; MakerBot’s manual does not guarantee compatibility with every formulation or spool.
MakerBot names the Sketch series as the Replicator series’ successor, but that does not amount to a detailed model-by-model comparison. Choose between a used Replicator 2 and a current printer based on the individual unit’s verified condition, your willingness to follow its manual-based workflow, and the support and parts situation you can confirm.
