Give the request some time to proceed; Apple does not publish a universal wait time for this status. If it still does not advance, work through these eight fixes from least disruptive to more involved.
The phrase alone does not prove the iPhone is broken or that Apple’s servers are overloaded. Apple’s available update guidance establishes compatibility, internet access, and sufficient storage as prerequisites, but does not define “Update Requested” as a specific error code. These steps apply to the wireless update process, including the iOS 27 context covered by iGeeksBlog’s October 1, 2026 guide; the offered version and compatible devices can change.
Why is my iPhone stuck on Update Requested?
“Update Requested” is a status shown before an update moves on to downloading or preparing. A delay can happen, particularly around a software release, but neither that explanation nor a fixed time limit is an official Apple definition. Apple says download time depends on update size and internet speed, and its guidance does not set a universal duration for this particular screen.
Before troubleshooting, confirm the offered iOS release supports your specific iPhone, Wi-Fi works, and the phone has enough available storage. Keep it connected to power while you wait. Apple documents compatibility, internet, and storage as update requirements; it does not publish one free-space figure that applies to every iPhone and update.

How do I fix iPhone Update Requested not downloading?
1. Give the request time to proceed
If the phone has just started the update request, leave it connected to power and Wi-Fi for a while. Large downloads and busy release periods can take longer, but there is no sourced universal number of minutes to wait. If the status remains unchanged and the connection is working, continue with the checks below.
2. Check Wi-Fi and the internet connection
- Open a webpage or app that requires internet access to confirm the current connection works.
- Check that the iPhone is connected to the intended Wi-Fi network. Apple recommends Wi-Fi rather than a personal hotspot for software downloads: Apple’s update-server and network guidance.
- If available, try another Wi-Fi network. Moving closer to the router, restarting it, or temporarily disconnecting a VPN are additional suggestions from iGeeksBlog’s October 1, 2026 guide, not Apple-confirmed causes of this status.
3. Restart the iPhone and request the update again
Restart the iPhone normally, then open Settings > General > Software Update and try again. If the phone is unresponsive, use Apple’s current instructions for restarting your specific model; button sequences vary. For Face ID models, the common force-restart sequence is to press and quickly release Volume Up, press and quickly release Volume Down, then hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears. 4. Delete a visible update file and download it again
Use this step only if an iOS update appears in iPhone Storage:
- Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Tap the listed iOS update, then choose Delete Update.
- Return to Settings > General > Software Update and request the update again.
If no update file is listed, do not assume one must be there; move to the next check. Apple’s update troubleshooting includes downloading the update again when installation cannot be completed: If your iPhone or iPad won’t update.

5. Make more storage available if needed
If storage is low, remove or offload content you do not need, and preserve a backup of important material before deleting anything personal. Apple requires enough available storage but does not give a universal minimum for this update state. iGeeksBlog’s October 1, 2026 article suggests 15 GB; treat that as its recommendation, not an official Apple requirement.
6. Reset network settings as a later option
If the simpler connection checks have not helped, you can try Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This removes saved Wi-Fi passwords and custom network configurations, so make sure you can reconnect to your networks. This is a secondary-guide troubleshooting suggestion; Apple’s cited pages do not specifically prescribe it for “Update Requested.” Do not choose Reset All Settings as a routine substitute.

7. Update through a computer
A computer is a practical alternative if the wireless route still will not advance. Back up the iPhone first. On a Mac, use Finder; on Windows, use Apple Devices where available, or iTunes for setups that use it. This is not guaranteed to bypass every network or server problem.
- Install available updates for the computer and its Apple Devices app or iTunes.
- Connect the iPhone directly to a computer USB port, not through a hub or keyboard.
- Follow the computer app’s prompts to locate and update the iPhone.
- If an error continues, restart both devices, check whether security software is interfering, then try another cable, USB port, computer, or network.

8. Contact Apple Support for recovery or recognition problems
Escalate if the computer does not recognize the iPhone, the phone enters recovery mode, or the Apple logo stays on screen for several minutes without a progress bar. Use Apple’s current recovery-mode instructions or contact Apple Support. Avoid choosing Restore as an early troubleshooting step: recovery workflows can erase data.

Neither route is established as universally faster or guaranteed to work. For computer-update errors, Apple advises trying a different Apple USB cable if one is available; a cable is relevant to the wired route, not a fix for a wireless delay.
