The SK hynix Platinum P51 is a PCIe 5.0 x4 M.2 2280 NVMe SSD rated for up to 14,700 MB/s sequential reads. It comes in 1TB and 2TB versions, with the 2TB model offering faster rated writes and twice the stated endurance. Reviews describe strong performance but also flag heat and pricing, so it makes the most sense in a compatible PCIe 5.0 system with suitable M.2 cooling.
What the SK hynix Platinum P51 offers
The P51 is a consumer SSD built for a PCIe 5.0 x4 M.2 slot. Its M.2 2280 size is the common 22-by-80-mm format, but the physical fit, slot wiring and available cooling still depend on the computer or motherboard. SK hynix’s reported launch lineup comprises 1TB and 2TB capacities; the cited launch specification table did not list a 500GB model.
Tom’s Hardware reports an SK hynix Alistar ACNT093 controller, 238-layer 3D V8 TLC NAND and onboard LPDDR4 DRAM. The DRAM capacity was not disclosed in that report. Tom’s Hardware’s P51 coverage provides the reported specifications.

SK hynix’s maximum sequential ratings, as reported by Tom’s Hardware in 2025, are 14,700 MB/s reads for both capacities. The 2TB model has a higher maximum sequential write rating. These are manufacturer specifications, not a guarantee that every system or workload will reach those speeds.

- Capacity: 256GB
- Form Factor: M.2 2242 PCIe NVME SSD
- Key Type: M Key
- Hardware Requirements: M.2 slot
- Dimension: 22mm x 80mm x 2.38m
| Capacity | Maximum sequential read | Maximum sequential write | Random read/write | Endurance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1TB | 14,700 MB/s | 12,900 MB/s | 2,300,000 / 2,400,000 IOPS | 600 TBW |
| 2TB | 14,700 MB/s | 13,400 MB/s | 2,300,000 / 2,400,000 IOPS | 1,200 TBW |
Tom’s Hardware reported the same maximum random-read and random-write ratings for both capacities: 2.3 million and 2.4 million IOPS, respectively. The ratings and endurance figures above are specifications reported in 2025, not independent workload results. TBW means terabytes written, a rated cumulative write amount used to describe endurance.
Does the P51 work in a PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot?
It is designed for a PCIe 5.0 x4 connection. Before buying, check the motherboard or system manual for the M.2 slot’s generation and lane configuration, whether it accepts an M.2 2280 drive, and whether installing an SSD in that slot affects other ports or expansion slots. A PCIe 5.0 drive may be usable in an older compatible M.2 slot, but it will not deliver its PCIe 5.0-class rated throughput there; confirm support and behavior for the specific system rather than assuming every M.2 slot is interchangeable.

Does it need a heatsink?
Cooling deserves attention. PC Gamer’s 2025 review flags the P51 as hot, and describes it as strong in load times and impressive overall while noting that it is not the fastest drive and can be expensive. StorageReview calls it a solid, efficient entry into the PCIe Gen5 SSD market. These reviews point to a capable drive with trade-offs, not a reason to overlook the system’s thermal setup.

If the motherboard or computer provides an M.2 heatsink, check that it fits over the drive and that any supplied thermal pad is installed as the manual specifies. If there is no suitable integrated cooling, consider a compatible M.2 2280 heatsink, but verify case clearance and avoid stacking it beneath another heatsink. Laptop and compact-system owners should follow the device maker’s guidance; an aftermarket heatsink may not fit.

- INTERFACE: SATA III connection delivering reliable data transfer with read speeds up to 560MB/s and write speeds up to 510MB/s.
- PERFORMANCE: TLC (Triple-Level Cell) NAND flash memory technology ensures consistent and dependable performance for everyday computing tasks.
- COMPATIBILITY: Internal SSD designed for seamless integration with systems supporting 2.5-inch SATA storage devices.
Endurance, warranty and launch pricing
Tom’s Hardware reported endurance ratings of 600 TBW for 1TB and 1,200 TBW for 2TB, while PC Gamer reported a five-year warranty. Check the warranty terms applicable to your region and seller before purchase; the cited coverage does not establish every market’s terms.
| Capacity | U.S. launch MSRP reported in 2025 | Rated endurance |
|---|---|---|
| 1TB | $169.99 | 600 TBW |
| 2TB | $269.99 | 1,200 TBW |
The prices are U.S. launch MSRPs reported by Tom’s Hardware, not current retailer quotes. Live price and stock can change; compare the actual checkout price and usable capacity against other drives before deciding whether the 2TB model’s extra capacity and endurance justify its cost.
Who should consider the Platinum P51?
The P51 is a sensible candidate for a desktop user who has a suitable PCIe 5.0 x4 M.2 slot, wants a high-end TLC drive, and can provide appropriate cooling. Its headline sequential ratings are most relevant to large file transfers and other storage workloads that can use high throughput. For everyday use, game loading or a system with an older M.2 interface, weigh the price against a compatible lower-cost drive rather than buying on peak sequential figures alone.
Quick Recap
- Check capacity: choose between the documented 1TB and 2TB versions based on storage needs and current price.
- Check the platform: confirm PCIe generation, x4 lane support, M.2 2280 clearance and any slot-sharing details in the system manual.
- Plan for cooling: account for the motherboard’s M.2 heatsink or the space and compatibility needed for another cooling solution.
- Compare the whole purchase: consider price per usable terabyte, warranty terms, endurance and the workload—not just peak read speed.
