σ(x) = 1 / (1 + e−x)
It is useful when a model needs a smooth output that can be interpreted as a probability for a binary outcome. The same curve also appears as one possible activation function in a neural network.
What is the sigmoid function?
In introductory machine learning, “sigmoid” usually means the logistic function shown above. More broadly, sigmoid can describe a family of S-shaped functions; here, the discussion is about the logistic version. It accepts any real number and returns a value between 0 and 1, but never exactly 0 or 1.
The curve is smooth and steadily increasing. When x is 0, σ(x) is 0.5. Negative inputs produce outputs below 0.5, while positive inputs produce outputs above 0.5. As x becomes very negative, the output approaches 0; as x becomes very positive, it approaches 1. How does sigmoid turn a score into a probability?
A model can begin by calculating a score from its input features. In logistic regression, this is a linear score, often called a logit or pre-activation. Applying the logistic sigmoid maps that score into the interval (0,1), producing an estimated probability for a binary outcome. For example, a score of zero becomes 0.5, while a positive score becomes a probability estimate above 0.5. A model’s probability estimate is not, by itself, a guarantee that its predictions are correct or well calibrated.

What is a neural network, and where does sigmoid fit?
A neural network processes inputs through connected computational units. An activation function transforms a unit’s score and introduces nonlinearity, allowing the network to represent more than a simple linear relationship. Sigmoid is one possible activation; in particular, it can be used at the output of a network for binary classification. University of Toronto CSC311 notes and MIT 6.390 notes on neural networks
Whether sigmoid is appropriate depends on the layer and task. A single binary output has a different purpose from a hidden layer or a model that must distribute probability across several classes.

Why does the sigmoid derivative matter?
The derivative has a convenient form:
σ′(x) = σ(x)(1 − σ(x))
At x = 0, the output is 0.5 and the slope is 0.25, its largest value. Far into either tail, the curve flattens as its output approaches 0 or 1, so its derivative becomes small. In a neural network, passing gradients through units in those saturated regions can therefore yield small gradients. This is a property to consider when choosing an activation, not proof that sigmoid is unsuitable for every use.

These functions differ in output range, centering, and role. The choice should fit what a layer needs to produce; there is no universal winner.
