Ufone has the clearest single-band spectrum advantage in Pakistan’s 2026 5G auction: it was assigned 120 MHz in the 3500 MHz band, compared with 50 MHz each for Jazz and Zong. That gives Ufone a potential capacity advantage, especially in busy areas, but it does not establish that Ufone will offer Pakistan’s fastest, widest-coverage or best 5G service. Those outcomes depend on deployment, network engineering, compatible devices and performance where customers use the network.

What Ufone won in Pakistan’s 2026 5G auction

Pakistan’s NGMS/5G auction offered 597.2 MHz across six bands: 700, 1800, 2100, 2300, 2600 and 3500 MHz. The Associated Press of Pakistan reported that 480 MHz was sold at the allocation stage, with Jazz receiving 190 MHz, Ufone 180 MHz and Zong 110 MHz. Those totals combine spectrum across bands; they are not a direct measure of network speed or coverage. APP’s March 10 auction report covered the sale, while its March 13 report detailed the assignment-stage results.

Band Ufone Jazz Zong
2600 MHz 60 MHz 70 MHz 60 MHz
3500 MHz 120 MHz 50 MHz 50 MHz

In the 3500 MHz band, Ufone’s assignment is 70 MHz more than either rival’s. The same results show a more mixed picture at 2600 MHz: Jazz received 70 MHz, while Ufone and Zong received 60 MHz each. APP reported that 60 MHz at 3500 MHz remained unsold. The auction raised $509.6 million, approximately Rs 142.6 billion, according to APP; that is auction revenue, not a measure of service quality.

Why 120 MHz at 3500 MHz could matter

Ufone says its 120 MHz at 3500 MHz is contiguous spectrum and can support wider channels and greater capacity in high-demand urban areas. That is a plausible technical benefit, but it is the operator’s explanation, not independent evidence that customers will experience a particular speed or reliability. Mid-band spectrum can provide substantial capacity, while its practical reach and indoor performance depend on deployment and network design.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Ufone also points to low-frequency spectrum as useful for rural and semi-urban coverage. Spectrum in different bands can serve different network needs, but the auction figures alone do not establish where Ufone has service, how far its signal reaches, or whether it performs better than competitors in a particular location. The company’s explanation of its plans appears in its March 19 statement.

Why the auction cannot decide who has the best network

Winning more spectrum in one band creates an opportunity, not a finished network advantage. Customers’ experience will also reflect how quickly operators deploy sites, radio equipment and backhaul; how densely those sites are placed; and how each network is engineered. A large assignment can add capacity where it is deployed, but it cannot by itself prove broad coverage or consistently high speeds.

The available auction and policy information does not establish comparable, independent operator speed results, a current Ufone 5G coverage map, or a model-by-model compatibility list for Ufone’s network. Without those, calling Ufone the fastest or widest-coverage operator would go beyond what the evidence supports. A meaningful comparison needs location-specific measurements and live-site coverage, not only auction totals.

Ufone’s broader spectrum claim depends on a proposed merger

Ufone has said that a combined PTML/Telenor entity would have a diversified 292.4 MHz spectrum portfolio, 8 MHz more than its nearest competitor. That is a company claim about a prospective combined entity, and it is conditional on regulatory approvals for the planned amalgamation. It is separate from the auction’s band-by-band assignments above; it should not be treated as an accomplished merger or a present-day Ufone holding without confirmation that the approvals and transaction have been completed.

What Pakistan’s rollout timetable says

At the auction opening on March 10, 2026, Information Technology and Telecommunication Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja forecast that 5G would first launch in Islamabad and provincial capitals within five to six months. That was an expectation, not a guaranteed launch date. The Ministry’s auction-opening statement also reported Khawaja’s view that the auction would improve the quality and capacity of existing 4G networks as well as introduce 5G.

A 2026 National Assembly document describes a phased rollout framework and says operators had initiated rollout. In the first two-year phase, it calls for deployment equivalent to 10% of existing LTE sites per year in designated federal and provincial capitals, with later phases extending to more cities. It also records an introduced 5G data-rate figure of 50 Mbps and an end-state target of 100 Mbps. These are framework figures, not independently measured speeds available to every user. The document states that existing data packages were being used for 5G without extra charges at the time it describes; current tariffs may differ. See the National Assembly document for the reported framework.

How to judge the 5G race as service arrives

For consumers, the useful question is not simply which operator bought the most MHz, but which one delivers the service needed at a particular place and price. Compare operators on these points as coverage and independent results become available:

  • Low-, mid- and high-band spectrum, including how much bandwidth is contiguous.
  • Deployment pace and which sites are actually live, rather than planned.
  • Backhaul capacity and network reliability in the locations that matter to you.
  • Independent speed and latency measurements by area and time of day.
  • Support for your exact handset model and regional variant.
  • Tariffs, package eligibility and any conditions attached to 5G access.

If you are considering a 5G phone, confirm the exact model’s band and carrier support with Ufone and check whether service is available where you intend to use it. The auction and policy information does not establish compatibility for particular handset models, so a generic “5G” label alone is not enough to guarantee access.
