If BitLocker decryption seems stuck in Windows 11, first check the status of the correct drive. If the operation is marked paused, resume it with manage-bde -resume. If it is not marked paused, a pause-and-resume cycle is a community-reported attempt—not a guaranteed Microsoft fix. Avoid turning off BitLocker as a speculative repair: that command initiates decryption rather than resuming it.
1. Check the status of the affected drive
BitLocker status is specific to each volume, so confirm the drive letter before running a command. Open Command Prompt as administrator and enter:
manage-bde -status C:
Replace C: with the letter of the drive that is decrypting. Microsoft documents manage-bde -status as a way to view drive information and BitLocker state on supported Windows versions, including Windows 11. Note the conversion status and percentage so you can tell whether the operation is active, paused, or reporting another state. Microsoft’s manage-bde status documentation
2. Resume decryption if the operation is paused
If the status shows that decryption is paused, run this command in the same elevated Command Prompt:

- Certified to FIPS 197 - High-level information security standard approved by the U.S. Government
- Brute-Force Password Attack Protection - Data is automatically erased after 6 failed access attempts. The data and encryption key are securely destroyed and the crypto drive is reset
- Rugged Double-Layer Waterproof* Design - Protects the crypto drive against knocks, drops, break-in and submerging in water. The electronics are shielded by a hardended inner case. The rubberised silicone outer casing provides a final layer of protection
- Auto-lock - The crypto drive will automatically encrypt all data and lock when removed from a PC/Mac or when the screen saver or "computer lock" function is activated on the host PC/Mac
- Secure Entry - Data cannot be accessed without the correct high-strength alphanumeric 8-16 character password. A password hint option is available. The password hint cannot match the password
manage-bde -resume C:
Use the affected volume’s letter in place of C:. Microsoft documents -resume as continuing an encryption or decryption operation that was paused. Check the drive again with manage-bde -status C: to see whether its state or percentage changes. Microsoft’s manage-bde resume documentation
3. If it appears frozen but is not marked paused
A Microsoft Q&A response suggests trying one pause-and-resume cycle for an operation that appears stuck:
manage-bde -pause C:
manage-bde -resume C:
This is community advice, not a documented universal remedy. The Q&A response is from an Independent Advisor and does not establish why decryption stopped or how often this approach works. If the second command reports an error, keep the exact error text rather than assuming the drive has resumed. Microsoft Q&A discussion

4. Don’t use -off as a resume command
manage-bde -off C: has a different purpose: it starts decrypting the volume and turns BitLocker off. Microsoft states that key protectors are removed when decryption completes. It is not a pause or resume control, and it should not be used as a speculative fix for a drive already decrypting. Microsoft advises that decryption should happen when protection is no longer required, not as a troubleshooting step. Microsoft’s manage-bde off documentation · Microsoft’s BitLocker operations guide

The available Microsoft guidance does not identify one cause or a reliable repair for every stalled decryption case. Preserve the complete output from manage-bde -status and any exact error returned by a command. Also note whether the affected volume is the Windows operating-system drive or a secondary data drive; those details help support staff diagnose the specific case. Avoid unsupported disk modifications or third-party repair utilities based solely on another user’s report. A separate Microsoft Q&A discussion illustrates that a pause can be followed by a resume error, but does not establish a general repair. Microsoft Q&A discussion
