To move a Confluence space into a GitHub Wiki, export the space as HTML, convert its pages to Markdown, copy and relink its images and attachments, then commit the files to the wiki’s Git repository. The export is a starting point, not a finished migration: Confluence macros, page restrictions, and links often need manual review or replacement.
This workflow applies to Confluence Cloud space exports and GitHub Wikis. Atlassian describes HTML export as useful for converting a space into a static website (Atlassian’s export documentation); GitHub Wikis can be cloned, edited locally, and pushed as Git repositories (GitHub’s wiki editing documentation).

Before exporting, decide what belongs in the wiki
Set the migration boundary first. Identify the Confluence spaces and pages that should move, and note pages with restricted access, macros, embedded material, or important attachments. A GitHub Wiki is not a direct replacement for Confluence permissions or dynamic features, so make a plan for content that has no equivalent before publishing it.
- Confirm you have the space administration or export permissions required for the chosen Confluence content.
- Decide whether to migrate an entire space or selected content.
- Record excluded pages and any content that must remain access-restricted.
- Choose who will approve the converted pages and who will maintain them after cutover.
Export the Confluence space as HTML
In Confluence Cloud, use the space export flow and choose HTML. Atlassian supports HTML export for an entire space or selected content. Keep the downloaded archive unchanged as your source copy; work on a separate extracted copy so you can compare converted pages with the original export.
#1 Best Overall
The archive is more than a collection of page text. Inventory its HTML files, page titles and hierarchy, images, downloadable attachments, and links before conversion. Note where macros or embedded content appear, since an HTML export may not preserve their behavior as a working GitHub feature.
Convert the exported pages to Markdown
Choose a conversion approach
For a small migration, you can convert pages individually with an HTML-to-Markdown converter and review each result. For a larger space, use a converter or exporter that can process pages in bulk, but test it on representative pages before running it across the archive. The community confluence-export project documents recursive, parallel page fetching and Markdown and HTML output; it is optional community software, so assess its authentication requirements, maintenance, and compatibility before relying on it for production migration.

Whichever route you choose, preserve a mapping from each original Confluence page title or URL to its new wiki filename. This mapping is essential when you rewrite internal links and when a page title changes.
Review the Markdown output
Check that the converter has handled headings, lists, tables, code blocks, escaped characters, and any callouts or admonitions in a readable way. Inspect macros and embedded content individually: replace them with an appropriate static explanation, link, image, or other supported content where possible, or document that the feature was not migrated. Do not assume visually plausible Markdown means the page has retained its original meaning.

Copy images and attachments, then repair their links
Copy images and downloadable files into a predictable location in the wiki repository, then update the converted Markdown to point to those files using paths that resolve from the wiki pages. Confluence export paths can depend on the archive’s directory structure; if you flatten or rearrange files, the original relative paths may stop working.
Atlassian cautions that attachments may need to be uploaded manually and that page links may need editing to point to the new attachments (Atlassian’s third-party knowledge-base import guidance). Check that each image and attachment is present and accessible after publishing. Before adding large binary files to Git, consider repository size and your organization’s licensing and storage policies.

Rewrite Confluence page links and anchors
Use your title-to-filename mapping to replace Confluence page URLs with links to the corresponding GitHub Wiki pages. Review links to pages you chose not to migrate: remove them, point them to an approved destination, or explain that the content remains elsewhere. Rewrite attachment URLs as well as page links, and check anchors individually because the converted heading text may not generate the same anchor as Confluence.
Search the converted files for leftover Confluence hostnames, /wiki/ paths, and attachment paths. These are useful indicators of links that still need attention, but a clean search is not proof that every rewritten link works.

Choose GitHub Wiki filenames and add the pages
GitHub uses a wiki page’s filename to determine its title, and the file extension determines how its content is rendered. Use readable, stable Markdown filenames and avoid backslash, slash, colon, asterisk, question mark, quotation mark, angle brackets, and vertical bar in page titles, which GitHub does not allow in wiki titles (GitHub’s wiki editing documentation). If a Confluence title cannot be used as-is, record the renamed page in your mapping and update all links to it.
- Create an initial page for the GitHub Wiki in GitHub so the wiki is available.
- Use GitHub’s wiki clone option to clone the wiki repository locally. GitHub documents the wiki as a Git repository that can be edited, committed, and pushed.
- Copy the converted Markdown pages and their assets into the local wiki repository. Review the wiki’s navigation and add or update navigation content as needed.
- Commit the changes and push them to the wiki’s default branch.
Validate the migration before cutover
A successful push only confirms that Git accepted the files; it does not establish that the pages render correctly or that links and assets work. Review the published wiki and compare it with the Confluence export, including a sample of high-value pages.
- Compare the migrated page inventory with the pages selected for export; investigate missing or unexpected pages.
- Check headings, lists, tables, code blocks, images, attachments, internal links, and anchors on representative pages.
- Verify that macros and embedded content have an intentional replacement or are clearly identified as unavailable.
- Search repository files for remaining Confluence URLs and paths, then open links in the published wiki to test them.
- Check for broken relative paths, especially if you changed the archive’s directory layout.
Plan the cutover and future edits
Once the wiki has passed review, announce the new canonical location and decide whether the old Confluence space should be frozen, redirected, or retained for a defined purpose. If both locations will remain editable during a transition, assign responsibility for synchronizing changes and set an end point for that arrangement; otherwise, readers may encounter conflicting versions.
If the migration needs automation beyond an HTML export and local conversion, Atlassian’s guidance points to REST API development or an Atlassian Solution Partner for unsupported wiki migrations. Verify current partner availability and commercial terms before selecting a provider (Atlassian’s import guidance).
