SpiderOakONE is best understood as privacy-focused online backup with built-in sync and sharing—not as a cloud drive for moving files off your computer. Files are encrypted on your device before upload, and SpiderOak says it cannot read their contents, filenames, or metadata. That protection comes with trade-offs: users need to maintain access credentials and current clients, and SpiderOakONE is not designed to make a full system image.

What SpiderOakONE does—and what it doesn’t

SpiderOak’s own FAQ describes SpiderOakONE as “a privacy-first backup service with built-in sync and sharing.” The distinction matters. With a conventional cloud drive, you may treat the online copy as the working copy and remove the local file. SpiderOak’s support guidance says users keep local files while SpiderOak stores encrypted online backups; it is not a hard drive in the cloud. SpiderOak explains the difference.

  • Backup: Keep files on your computer and maintain an online backup.
  • Sync and sharing: Use the included features to synchronize and share files, but don’t assume they provide the breadth of collaboration tools found in mainstream cloud-drive suites.
  • Not a system-image tool: SpiderOakONE is intended for user files, not for cloning a whole computer or restoring an entire system drive.

How SpiderOak’s privacy model works

SpiderOak calls its approach “Zero-Trust, End-to-End Encryption” and “True No-Knowledge Privacy.” Its FAQ says files are encrypted on the device before they leave it, and that SpiderOak cannot read file contents, filenames, or metadata. See the SpiderOakONE FAQ for the company’s explanation.

This design shifts responsibility to the account holder. Keep working credentials and up-to-date clients: recovery and support depend on them, and an encryption model that prevents the provider from reading data also limits what the provider can do if you lose access. SpiderOak’s support guidance also calls for regular account checks and removal of old devices. It warns that outdated clients can cause communication problems and says SpiderOakONE is not intended as cold storage. Account-maintenance guidance.

Plans and prices

SpiderOak’s official page lists four storage tiers. The prices below are the amounts shown on that page; annual figures are for annual billing, not monthly recurring charges.

Storage Monthly billing Annual billing Included
150GB $6/month $69/year Unlimited devices, backup, sync, sharing, historical versions
400GB $11/month $115/year Unlimited devices, backup, sync, sharing, historical versions
2TB $14/month $149/year Unlimited devices, backup, sync, sharing, historical versions
5TB $29/month $320/year Unlimited devices, backup, sync, sharing, historical versions

These are the plan details listed on SpiderOak’s official SpiderOakONE page. Check that page before subscribing in case pricing or plan terms have changed.

Can SpiderOak back up your whole computer?

No. SpiderOak Support says SpiderOak One and Groups are intended to back up user files, not clone a computer or back up an entire system hard drive. A full clone may also be too large for SpiderOak. SpiderOak’s system-backup guidance recommends a separate system-cloning tool and storing the clone on an external drive, while using SpiderOakONE for user files.

That creates two different recovery jobs: SpiderOak can help restore backed-up files, while a separate clone is the route for recovering a complete system image. Don’t treat one as a substitute for the other.

Versions, reliability, and maintenance

All four listed plans include historical versions, which can help when you need an earlier copy of a file. That feature is useful for file recovery, but it does not turn SpiderOakONE into a full system-image backup.

SpiderOak’s support index lists SpiderOak One Backup version 7.5.2 release notes dated April 16, 2025. This is a dated release record, not a guarantee about the latest version; check the support center for current client information. The company’s FAQ says it does not publish a numeric consumer service-level agreement, so customers should not infer a guaranteed uptime percentage. A June 2025 maintenance notice estimated 72–96 hours of temporary unavailability; that notice describes a planned event at that time, not a standing estimate for future maintenance.

Is SpiderOakONE worth it?

SpiderOakONE makes the strongest case for people who prioritize provider-blind encryption for backed-up files and want backup, sync, and sharing in one service. Its constraints are just as important: it is backup-first rather than a cloud drive, it lacks the broad collaboration focus of mainstream storage suites, and it requires users to stay on top of credentials, devices, and client updates.

Independent reviews have also highlighted security as a strength and collaboration depth, convenience, interface polish, or value versus larger cloud-storage suites as weaker points. TechRadar’s review discusses ShareRooms and end-to-end encryption; Tom’s Guide likewise notes strong security alongside fewer broad cloud-drive features. Those reviews are older than SpiderOak’s current published pricing and should not be read as fresh performance testing: TechRadar’s SpiderOak review and Tom’s Guide’s SpiderOak review.

Choose it if your priority is encrypted online backup and you are comfortable keeping your own local files and managing account access. If your main goal is to offload files, collaborate extensively, or restore a whole computer from one backup, SpiderOakONE alone does not match that need.
