Run the project and visit http://localhost:8081/hellomule to see the plain-text response.
What this Mule application does
The sample is a single request-response flow: an HTTP Listener accepts a browser request, Set Payload supplies a fixed response, and Mule returns that response to the caller. MuleSoft describes its tutorial as a demonstration of a simple HTTP request-response interaction. The current official tutorial uses Anypoint Studio 7 and Mule 4. MuleSoft’s Hello World tutorial
Create the project and configure its flow
- Create a Mule project. In Anypoint Studio 7, create a new Mule project named
hellomule. - Place an HTTP Listener. If HTTP is missing from the Mule Palette, add the HTTP module. Drag an HTTP Listener onto the flow canvas and configure its connection with host
0.0.0.0and port8081. - Set the listener path. Use
/hellomuleas the Listener path. - Set the response payload. Add Set Payload after the Listener, enter
Hello Mule!as its value, and set the MIME type totext/plain. - Save the project. The flow should be a request-response flow so the payload is returned to the HTTP caller.
The optional Logger shown in MuleSoft’s tutorial logs the request path to the Studio console; it is not needed to return the greeting. The equivalent configuration is:
<http:listener-config name="HTTP_Listener_config" doc:name="HTTP Listener config">
<http:listener-connection host="0.0.0.0" port="8081" />
</http:listener-config>
<flow name="hello-muleFlow">
<http:listener doc:name="Listener" config-ref="HTTP_Listener_config" path="/hellomule"/>
<set-payload value="Hello Mule!" doc:name="Set Payload" mimeType="text/plain"/>
<logger level="INFO" doc:name="Logger" message="#[attributes.requestPath]"/>
</flow>

Run the project and check the response
- In Studio, right-click the flow canvas and choose Run project hellomule, or click Run.
- Wait for the application to deploy, then open http://localhost:8081/hellomule in a browser.
- Confirm the page displays
Hello Mule!.
The listener connection binds to 0.0.0.0, but use localhost (or the appropriate hostname for the machine running Mule) in the browser URL. The configured port and path must match the URL.
Fix common listener startup problems
- Port 8081 is already in use: Change the HTTP Listener connection to an available port, save, and rerun. Update the browser URL to use the new port.
- The application does not start with host 0.0.0.0: MuleSoft’s tutorial troubleshooting guidance suggests trying
localhostas the listener host if the problem persists. - The browser cannot reach the flow: Check that deployment completed, and verify that the browser URL uses the listener’s actual host, port, and path. The sample path is
/hellomule.
Use tooling that matches the Mule runtime
This walkthrough targets Mule 4 in Studio 7. MuleSoft’s compatibility guidance pairs Studio 7.x and DataWeave 2.0 with Mule 4.x, and Studio 6.x and DataWeave 1.0 with Mule 3.x. Avoid copying Mule 3 configuration or expressions into a Mule 4 project without adapting them. MuleSoft’s DataWeave versioning and compatibility guidance
An older Anypoint Exchange asset named Hello World is a separate legacy example: it was published on September 12, 2018, and documents a similar flow using /helloWorld and the response Hello World. It is not the same endpoint or payload as this Studio 7 tutorial. Anypoint Exchange
