DJI announced the Avata 360 on 26 March 2026, introducing an FPV drone that can capture spherical 360-degree video as well as conventional single-lens footage. DJI says 360 mode records up to 8K/60 fps HDR, while single-lens mode tops out at 4K/60 fps. The launch establishes DJI’s entry into this product category; it does not, by itself, show that the drone outperforms competing models.

What makes the DJI Avata 360 different?

DJI positions the Avata 360 as both an FPV aircraft and an aerial camera. In 360 mode, the drone records a spherical view that can be reframed after the flight. In single-lens mode, it captures conventional flat footage. The practical distinction is that a pilot can capture a broad view for later composition or choose a more traditional camera perspective.

These are DJI-published specifications, not independent image-quality findings. The product page lists two 1/1.1-inch CMOS sensors, up to 13.5 stops of dynamic range, and 360-degree still photos up to 120 megapixels. Those figures describe DJI’s stated sensor and output specifications; the sensor format should not be mistaken for a conventional one-inch physical sensor.

Mode DJI-listed capture Format and feature notes
360 Up to 8K (2:1) at 60 fps HDR video; 360-degree photos up to 120 MP 360 video uses OSV. DJI lists FocusTrack, a 360 virtual gimbal, and omnidirectional sensing in this mode.
Single-lens Up to 4K/60 fps video Flat video uses HEVC MP4. DJI says only forward obstacle sensing is supported in this mode.

DJI’s FAQ says feature availability can depend on the mode and control method. Do not assume every intelligent feature or sensing direction is available in both capture modes.

When did it launch, and where is it available?

DJI’s global announcement opened preorders on 26 March 2026 through DJI and authorized retailers, with shipping scheduled to begin in April, varying by region. DJI Japan announced sales beginning 9 April 2026 through its official store and authorized retailers, including Amazon Japan. That announcement confirms a Japan-specific sales channel at that time, not current stock or availability on other Amazon marketplaces.

Launch prices differed by market and bundle. DJI listed these UK launch prices in its 26 March announcement and Japanese suggested retail prices including tax in its 9 April announcement:

What equipment do you need to fly it?

The drone-only package is not a complete FPV setup. DJI says its drone-only listing excludes goggles, motion controllers, and remote controllers, which are required for activation and use. A first-time buyer should check the exact package contents before ordering rather than treating “drone only” as flight-ready.

  • Remote-controller setup: DJI lists RC 2, RC-N2, and RC-N3 as standard remote controllers. DJI describes the RC 2 as the choice for precise framing.
  • Goggles and motion control: DJI says RC Motion 3 must be paired with DJI Goggles 3 or Goggles N3. Its product page presents compatible goggles and motion control as an immersive flight option.
  • Bundle decision: Compare what a bundle includes with the compatible equipment you already own. The product information cited here does not establish compatibility with other controller or goggles generations, so verify a specific model pairing before buying.

The drone-only box contents shown by DJI include one battery, a gimbal protector, two pairs of spare propellers, a screwdriver, a foldable landing pad, a lens cloth, and a USB-C cable. DJI also names the DJI Avata 360 Intelligent Flight Battery as an accessory, but the cited product information does not establish its standalone price.

What are the limits of its obstacle sensing and flight claims?

DJI says omnidirectional obstacle sensing works in 360 mode, but qualifies its operation: surfaces need discernible texture and lighting must be at least 1 lux. Left, right, and rear sensing uses the fisheye cameras and is unavailable in single-lens mode; only forward sensing is supported there. Treat sensing as a mode- and environment-dependent aid, not a guarantee against collisions.

DJI Japan lists a maximum flight time of 23 minutes and maximum video transmission distance of 20 km. These are manufacturer-published maximums under the stated test or feature context, and DJI says actual results may vary. The transmission figure is also subject to local rules; neither number should be read as an expected result on every flight.

How should owners protect and repair the camera?

DJI advises storing the aircraft with the gimbal locked and the protector attached, and checking the protector for debris that could scratch the lens. If the front element is scratched, DJI names a DJI Avata 360 Replacement Lens Kit With Tools. Check the local product page for current availability and terms.

What changed in the dated firmware notes?

DJI’s release notes include entries dated 26 March and 23 April 2026. The 26 March entry lists support for FPV Remote Controller 3, panorama-stitching calibration, new cycling and skiing detection in FocusTrack, additional single-lens 2.7K options, a Sport-mode horizontal speed increase to 18 m/s, and a head-tracking update. The 23 April entry records later firmware versions and says they fixed known issues. These dated notes do not establish which firmware is latest today; check DJI’s current release notes before updating or troubleshooting.

Does the launch prove DJI has displaced other 360 FPV drones?

No. DJI’s announcement and product page establish the Avata 360’s launch timing, positioning, stated specifications, and configurations. They do not establish a market share shift, a “best” ranking, or superiority over a competitor. Buyers comparing 360-capable FPV drones should look for like-for-like evidence on capture modes, included control equipment, sensing behavior, local bundle pricing, repair options, and availability rather than infer a winner from launch claims alone.
