You can use Syncfusion Essential JS 2 Maps to draw a seating layout from custom seat shapes and let users select one or more seats. The Maps control renders the geometry and handles the selection interaction; your application must supply the seat data and implement booking, persistence, and conflict handling.
How the seating layout works
This approach treats a seating chart as a set of custom shapes rather than a geographic map. You define the seat outlines as shape data, then render them in a Maps layer configured with normal geometry. Syncfusion’s custom-path documentation demonstrates this pattern using a local seat.ts data file and the @syncfusion/ej2-maps package.
The control does not automatically create rows, aisles, seat numbers, accessibility information, or booking records. Those are data and interface decisions for your application. Syncfusion’s product page describes custom GeoJSON shapes for layouts such as flight seating: Essential JS 2 Maps.
Prepare seat geometry and render it
Start by defining each seat outline in a shape-data file. The example imports that data as seat, then assigns it to a layer’s shapeData. This makes the geometry the key modeling task: each seat needs an outline positioned where it belongs in the overall layout.

The core setup follows the official custom-path example. Import Maps and Selection from @syncfusion/ej2-maps, inject the selection module, and configure a layer with normal geometry and the seat data:

Enable and style seat selection
Selection depends on injecting Selection with Maps.Inject(Selection). The layer’s selectionSettings turns selection on; setting enableMultiSelect to true allows users to select multiple shapes. Set it to false if the interaction should permit only one selected seat at a time.
The official “Bus seat selection” demo uses different colors to represent available, booked, and selected seats, and identifies selectionSettings as the way to customize selection appearance. Treat these as visual states, not proof of a booking system: the demo does not establish how booked seats are stored or synchronized. Connect selection to booking logic
A selected shape is an interaction state. It does not, by itself, reserve a seat or guarantee that the seat is still available. Your application should own the authoritative booking state and validate a selection before confirming it.
- Use your application’s seat records to determine which seats are available before a user makes a selection.
- Let the Maps layer provide the visual selection interaction, with single- or multi-select behavior chosen for your use case.
- When the user attempts to book, validate the chosen seats against the authoritative booking system.
- Only after successful validation should your application persist the booking and update the visual state; define how it handles seats that another user has booked in the meantime.
The final validation and update steps are application architecture, not behavior supplied by the documented Maps example.
