No: the latest report says rumors that Microsoft canceled a planned Xbox Cloud Gaming controller are false. Windows Central’s October 2, 2026 update attributes that information to its sources, not to an official Microsoft product announcement. The report does not establish the controller’s design, price, release date, or final availability.
The confirmed practical concern is narrower: Xbox app support on 2020 Samsung smart TVs is reported to end November 3, 2026. Other supported devices and ordinary compatible controllers remain options.
What is known about the rumored Xbox Cloud Gaming controller?
Windows Central’s October 2, 2026 update says its sources deny plans to slow Xbox Cloud Gaming and say rumors that Microsoft canceled an upcoming cloud-gaming controller are false. That is reporting about what the sources understand, not a Microsoft announcement confirming a product. No reliable details are established here about specifications, price, release timing, or whether the device will ultimately ship. Read Windows Central’s report.
For now, treat a dedicated controller as unannounced rather than canceled or available to buy. You do not need to wait for it to play: Xbox supports existing controllers on compatible devices.

What is changing on 2020 Samsung TVs?
Windows Central reports that Microsoft emailed users that the Xbox app will stop being supported on 2020 Samsung smart TVs starting November 3, 2026. The email wording reproduced in the report says newer Xbox Cloud Gaming technology is no longer compatible with the operating-system version available on those models. The report also says Samsung is not updating the affected sets and that future features require newer Chromium APIs.
This is a reported cutoff for 2020 Samsung smart TVs, not evidence that Xbox Cloud Gaming is ending across all TVs or devices. Xbox’s general device list includes select Samsung 2020-and-newer devices, so check the exact model and current notice rather than assuming every Samsung TV has the same status. Xbox’s device and cloud-gaming page lists supported categories, but a live list may not yet reflect a separately reported retirement for a specific model year.

Which TVs and streaming devices are listed for Xbox Cloud Gaming?
Xbox lists select Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K and 4K Max models, Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen), LG TVs with webOS 24 or newer (including specified updated 2022 and 2023 models), select Samsung 2020-and-newer smart TVs and 2022-and-newer monitors, and select VIDAA devices running OS 9.6 or higher. Device, region, Game Pass plan, and game availability affect what works; verify your exact model on Xbox’s current compatibility page.
VIDAA TVs
Xbox said on July 30, 2026 that rollout of the Xbox app to compatible VIDAA OS-powered TVs from 2024–2026 had begun and would expand gradually. Xbox specifies a TV running VIDAA OS 9.6 or later, an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, or Essential subscription, a supported Bluetooth wireless controller, and a reliable high-speed internet connection. Supported games and availability can vary. Xbox’s VIDAA rollout announcement names example compatible controllers and requirements.

Subscription and connection requirements
For most cloud-playable games on TVs, Xbox says an active Game Pass subscription and a supported game are required, with some exceptions. Xbox recommends high-speed internet; performance depends on connection, location, device, and other factors. The available information does not establish a universal minimum speed or latency guarantee. Check the current Xbox Cloud Gaming support information for your region and plan.
What controller works with Xbox Cloud Gaming?
A dedicated cloud controller is not a prerequisite. Xbox says official Xbox controllers, PlayStation controllers, and other supported models can work for TV play, subject to the device and game. Its VIDAA announcement specifically lists the Xbox Wireless Controller, Xbox Adaptive Controller, Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, DualSense, and DualShock 4 as examples. Confirm compatibility for the exact TV or streaming device before buying. Xbox’s supported-device page is the place to check current compatibility.

Xbox Wireless Controller
The standard Xbox Wireless Controller is the simplest fit if you want a full-size living-room gamepad. Microsoft says it pairs with Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows, Android, and iOS, although features can depend on device and operating-system versions. Microsoft advertises battery use of up to 40 hours; actual battery life varies, and its test used standard AA batteries in preproduction units. See Microsoft’s controller details.
Before purchasing, check that your specific TV or stick supports the controller connection you intend to use, and consider accessibility or remapping needs. If you already own a controller confirmed on Xbox’s compatibility list, there may be no reason to buy another.

Optional mobile controller
For phone play, Backbone Pro Xbox Edition is an optional handheld-style alternative, not a requirement for TV gaming. Xbox’s November 2025 update described it as usable across phones, tablets, PCs, TVs, and streaming devices; Backbone lists USB-C compatibility for Android and iPhone 15 and newer, Bluetooth play, and cloud-gaming support. Verify current phone compatibility, connection method, price, and stock before choosing it. Xbox’s November 2025 update and Backbone’s product page provide details.

On supported mobile games, touch controls can eliminate the need for a separate gamepad. Xbox reported in December 2025 that touch controls were available for more than 230 cloud games at that time; the figure may have changed, and touch support applies only to supported titles on mobile, not every game or TV setup. Xbox also reported a Stream your own game collection of more than 1,000 games in that December 2025 update; this is a dated platform figure, not a guarantee that every title is streamable in every region or on every device. Xbox’s December 2025 update has the original figures.
