To use GitHub in Android Studio, enable Git for the project, sign in to GitHub, then clone a repository or publish your local project. Commit changes locally before pushing them, and use a feature branch and pull request when work needs review.

Before you start

  • Install Git and make sure Android Studio can locate it. In the IDE, check Settings > Version Control > Git and use the test option to confirm the Git executable works.
  • Have a GitHub account and the repository URL or permission to create a repository. You need write access to push directly to someone else’s repository; otherwise, use a fork.

Android Studio supports Git along with other version-control systems, as Android Developers explains.

Connect GitHub to Android Studio

  1. Open Settings (on macOS, Android Studio > Settings or Preferences, depending on version).
  2. Go to Version Control > GitHub.
  3. Choose browser-based authorization or token login, then complete the sign-in flow. JetBrains documents these options, including GitHub Enterprise, in its GitHub account setup guide.

Some Android Studio releases may label or arrange menus differently. If you do not see a GitHub account setting, use the IDE’s Settings search for “GitHub.”

Clone a repository from GitHub

  1. Choose Git > Clone or VCS > Get from Version Control.
  2. Select GitHub and sign in if prompted. Select a repository from the list, or provide its URL.
  3. Choose a local directory and click Clone. Open the project when Android Studio offers to do so.

For a repository URL, open its GitHub page, select Code, and copy the HTTPS or SSH URL. Android Studio’s clone flow is also described in the JetBrains GitHub project guide.

Publish a local Android Studio project

  1. Open the project, then enable Git with VCS > Enable Version Control Integration. Select Git and associate it with the project root. The exact menu wording can vary by Android Studio version. See Android Studio’s version-control documentation.
  2. Choose Git > GitHub > Share Project on GitHub. If Git has not yet been enabled, the option may instead appear under VCS > Share Project on GitHub.
  3. Enter a repository name and optional description, select visibility, and share. Use a private repository if the project should not be publicly visible. The IDE generally sets the remote name to origin.

Before sharing, inspect the files Android Studio is about to commit. Exclude secrets such as signing credentials, access tokens, and local configuration containing private values. A public repository makes committed content visible to others.

Commit changes and push them

  1. Review changed files in the Commit tool window. Uncheck files that should not be included.
  2. Enter a concise commit message describing the change and commit locally.
  3. Choose Git > Push, check the destination branch and remote, then confirm the push.

A commit records a snapshot in your local repository; pushing sends committed changes to GitHub. If you have made no commit, there is nothing new to push. Android Studio’s Git workflow and commit controls are covered in the JetBrains commit and push guide.

Choose the right collaboration workflow

Situation Recommended workflow What happens
You own the repository or have write access Create a feature branch, commit, push, then open a pull request when review is needed. Your branch can be reviewed and merged without making unfinished work the default branch.
You do not have write access Fork the repository, clone your fork, make a branch, and push to the fork. Open a pull request from your fork to the original repository. Keep your fork current by syncing it with upstream.

GitHub describes branches as a way to isolate development work and pull requests as a place to propose, discuss, review, and merge changes in its branch and pull-request guidance. For the fork workflow in Android Studio, see JetBrains’ guide to forking GitHub projects.

  • HTTPS: A practical choice when network rules or firewalls block SSH. Sign in through the IDE or use a personal access token when prompted; GitHub no longer accepts account passwords for Git operations.
  • SSH: Uses an SSH key associated with your GitHub account. Confirm the key is loaded and registered with GitHub. Some networks block SSH connections, so HTTPS may work when SSH does not.

If the IDE rejects your sign-in or push

  • Confirm you authenticated to the GitHub account that has access to the repository.
  • Check the remote URL and its protocol. A repository cloned with SSH will not authenticate through an HTTPS credential, or vice versa.
  • For HTTPS, use browser authorization or a token rather than your GitHub password. If credentials appear stale, remove the saved credential using your operating system’s credential manager or IDE account settings, then sign in again.
  • For SSH, verify that the public key is added to GitHub and that the private key is available to your SSH agent. If the network blocks SSH, switch the remote to HTTPS.
  • If pushing is rejected because the remote contains commits you do not have, fetch or pull the remote changes, resolve any conflicts, commit the resolution if needed, and push again.
  • If you receive a permission error, request write access or use a fork and pull request.

Use a token carefully

GitHub recommends fine-grained personal access tokens where possible, with permissions limited to the repository and operations required. JetBrains’ documented classic-token flow lists repo, gist, read:org, workflow, read:user, and user:email scopes; do not assume every integration needs all of them. Check current permissions and use the narrowest available access. Never commit a token into the project.

See GitHub’s authentication guidance and JetBrains’ token sign-in instructions for current details.
