There is no single name for every old projector. A machine for family photographs is usually a 35mm slide projector—more specifically a carousel slide projector if it uses a circular tray. A projector that advances reels is a film projector or movie projector. Clear sheets placed on a lit horizontal surface require an overhead projector, historically also called a viewgraph. Much earlier glass-slide equipment is a magic lantern or lantern-slide projector.
What do you call an old projector for family slides?
For mounted photographic transparencies, the accurate general term is 35mm slide projector. If the slides sit in a round, rotating tray, call it a carousel slide projector. The tray advances one still image at a time into the optical path; it does not run a continuous reel.
Kodak Carousel machines are a well-known example. The Science Museum Group catalogue includes the Kodak Carousel projector Model 550R (1961), Kodak Pocket Carousel 200 and other slide-projector models. A model number is more useful than the word “vintage” when looking for a lamp, tray, belt or replacement unit.
What do you call the projector that uses reels?
A machine that pulls perforated motion-picture film from one reel to another is a film projector or movie projector. Include the film gauge when identifying it: common historical formats include 8mm, 16mm and 35mm. Gauge determines which reels, gates, sprockets and lenses are compatible.

Film projectors advance a sequence of frames, creating motion. The Korean Film Archive describes the historical change from hand-cranked silent projection to motorized sound projection and the commercial standardization around 35mm film. A hand-cranked 35mm machine and a small 8mm home-movie projector are both film projectors, but their parts and media are not interchangeable.
What did schools use to project transparencies?
Schools commonly used an overhead projector. The operator placed a clear acetate transparency—or, on some historical equipment, a glass sheet—on a flat, illuminated stage. A lens and mirror sent the enlarged image to a wall or screen.

The historical synonym viewgraph is documented by the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, which describes an early Jules Duboscq projection instrument made after 1876 and notes that this form later became known as a viewgraph or overhead projector. Do not confuse an overhead projector with a slide projector: the former uses a flat stage for loose transparencies, while the latter uses mounted slides in a carrier or tray.
What is a very early glass-slide projector called?
Early lecture and entertainment equipment for photographic glass plates is a magic lantern, also called a lantern-slide projector. A lantern slide is a glass photographic transparency held in a slide carrier. The Australian Museum describes lantern slides as a precursor to the modern slide projector and data projector.

A typical magic lantern used a light source, condenser, slide carrier and projection lens. Its construction and illumination differ from later electric slide projectors, even though both project still images.
Identify an old projector by its media and loading method
| What you see | Correct name | Image movement | Loading method | Useful identifier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mounted photographic transparencies in small frames | 35mm slide projector | One still frame at a time | Individual carrier, straight magazine or tray | Slide size and projector model |
| Mounted slides in a circular rotating tray | Carousel slide projector | One still frame at a time | Carousel tray | Tray type and model number |
| Perforated film running between reels | Film projector or movie projector | Continuous sequence of frames | Reels and film path | Film gauge: 8mm, 16mm or 35mm |
| Clear acetate or glass sheet on a horizontal lit stage | Overhead projector or viewgraph | Still image until the sheet is changed | Flat stage | Stage size and lamp assembly |
| Early photographic glass plates | Magic lantern or lantern-slide projector | Still image until the plate is changed | Glass-plate carrier | Plate dimensions and light source |
Key historical milestones
- After 1876: The Smithsonian records a Jules Duboscq projection instrument representing an early form of the later viewgraph or overhead projector.
- 1895: The Smithsonian records the Lumière Cinématographe camera, printer and projector. It also identifies the Latham Eidoloscope as one of the first film projectors.
- 1961: The Science Museum Group catalogue identifies Kodak Carousel projector Model 550R, an example of the tray-loaded 35mm slide-projector era.
Choose the right term when repairing or digitizing one
For mounted slides
Search for the exact model followed by “35mm slide projector” or “carousel slide projector.” Check whether the machine accepts the same tray style and whether its lamp and voltage match your region. A slide projector cannot automatically display every transparency size.

- Remote forward, reverse, and focus
- 3-position lamp switch (off, fan, and lamp)
- Lens not included
- Rear leveling foot, accessory outlet
- Improved corner-to-center illumination
For movie film
Record the gauge—8mm, 16mm or 35mm—before buying parts or arranging scanning. Film transport, sprockets and gates are gauge-specific. Do not feed film into a projector simply because the reel appears to fit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor overhead transparencies
Identify the stage dimensions, lamp type and cooling system. Overhead projectors are designed for flat sheets, not mounted 35mm slides or motion-picture film.

For lantern slides
Measure the glass plate and inspect the carrier before attempting projection. Very old plates and lanterns may be fragile; viewing or digitizing them with suitable preservation handling is safer than forcing an incompatible plate into a modern tray.

“Vintage projector” describes age or style, not the media it accepts. Two machines can look similar while requiring different lamps, lenses, trays, belts or film gauges. The most useful identification record includes the projector’s brand, model number, media format, loading system and—when it uses film—the gauge.
