There is no single price to make an e-commerce website. Your budget depends on the platform, the amount of design and development required, your product catalog and integrations, and who will maintain the store. A useful estimate separates one-time setup and build work from recurring platform or hosting fees, payment costs, and day-to-day operations.

What determines the cost?

The main decision is how the store will be built and operated. A hosted builder bundles much of the infrastructure; a self-managed platform gives you more responsibility for hosting and upkeep; a custom build adds flexibility but requires more development work. Costs also depend on your country, the number and type of products, payment and shipping requirements, integrations, design expectations, and the people doing setup and maintenance.

For example, Shopify’s vendor-authored September 2026 development guide gives platform and custom-build examples, not a universal market average. Its figures should be treated as planning inputs rather than a quote for your specific store. Shopify’s 2026 ecommerce development guide

How the main approaches compare

Approach What you pay for Trade-offs
Hosted ecommerce builder Subscription; possibly paid apps, themes, payment and transaction charges, and development help. Typically less infrastructure to set up yourself; included services and payment terms vary by plan and country.
WordPress with WooCommerce Hosting, domain, themes, extensions, payment processing, and any implementation or maintenance help. The core software is free, but you choose and manage more of the store’s components.
Open-source platform Hosting, implementation, security, updates, integrations, and technical labor; some enterprise editions are paid. Can offer flexibility, but free-to-download software does not mean a free-to-operate store.
Custom build Discovery, design, development, integrations, testing, launch, and ongoing support. Can fit specialized requirements, but generally involves more work and a longer build than a hosted setup.

Hosted builders

Shopify’s September 2026 guide lists its plans at $29–$299 per month with annual billing, or $39–$399 per month when billed monthly. These are platform subscription examples, not a complete project budget; check current pricing for your country and account for payment costs, apps, and services that are not included. A hosted service can bundle hosting and commerce functions, reducing the amount you need to configure and manage yourself. Check precisely what the plan includes before comparing its price with self-managed software.

WordPress with WooCommerce

WooCommerce describes its core software as free and open source. Its pricing page, accessed October 3, 2026, lists hosting at $25–$350 per month for most stores and extensions at $29–$299 per year per extension. Those are WooCommerce’s published figures, not a guaranteed quote for every store; payment processing is charged separately by the provider you choose. WooCommerce pricing and cost breakdown

Open-source software

Free software can still require paid hosting and substantial technical work to implement, secure, update, and support. Shopify’s guide distinguishes free Magento Open Source from Adobe Commerce, which is priced by quote. Consider these the guide’s descriptions, not a complete comparison of current licensing or service costs.

Custom development

Shopify’s September 2026 guide says most custom projects cost less than $10,000 and that complex, high-traffic builds can cost more. This is a vendor-published estimate, not a verified market-wide benchmark or a quote; project scope and labor assumptions determine the actual price. The guide also cites developer and agency hourly rates as inputs, but an hourly rate alone cannot tell you the final project cost. Shopify’s development guide

Separate the build budget from the cost to run the store

A quote should show which expenses happen once and which continue. Depending on your setup, ask for an itemized estimate covering:

  • One-time work: discovery and scoping, design, platform setup or implementation, product and content entry, custom development, migration, integrations, testing, and launch.
  • Recurring services: platform subscription or hosting, domain renewal, paid themes, apps or extensions, maintenance, updates, security work, and support.
  • Order and business operations: payment processing and any platform transaction fees, marketing, fulfillment, and returns processing.

Not every store needs every item, and a provider may bundle some services. Ask what the estimate includes, what is billed separately, and whether prices include taxes. BigCommerce’s cost guide identifies broad categories such as hosting and maintenance, but its price details are dated and are not a basis for current price recommendations. Compare total cost, not just the software price

A low subscription or free download does not, by itself, make one option the least expensive. Compare each viable route across the same factors:

  • Upfront setup and development outlay.
  • Recurring subscription or hosting, extensions, and maintenance.
  • Payment-processing charges and any platform transaction fees.
  • Responsibility for security, updates, uptime, and technical support.
  • Customization, integrations, catalog size, traffic expectations, and growth needs.
  • Time to launch and the technical skills available to you.
  • Country-specific availability, prices, and payment options.

For Shopify, third-party transaction fees may apply, and Shopify Payments is available only in certain countries. Check the terms for your intended location and plan before estimating payment costs. Shopify’s pricing page

What to prepare before requesting a quote

  1. Define the store: list the number and types of products, required design, and any accessibility or security requirements.
  2. Map transactions: identify the countries you will sell to, required payment methods, shipping regions, and fulfillment needs.
  3. List connections and transitions: note integrations with other systems and whether products, customers, or orders must be migrated from an existing store.
  4. Set delivery and ownership expectations: give the desired launch date and say who will handle updates, support, and ongoing maintenance.
  5. Request an itemized proposal: ask the provider to separate one-time work from recurring fees, explain exclusions, and describe how costs may change as traffic, orders, or feature needs grow.

Without your country, requirements, platform, catalog, payment setup, and labor assumptions, a responsible project total cannot be calculated. A useful quote makes those assumptions visible rather than presenting a subscription price as the cost of the entire store.
