For Jenkins, the OpenTelemetry plugin can export pipeline logs alongside traces and Jenkins health metrics, making it possible to search log messages with the context of the job and its execution. The key design decisions are which workers can reach the endpoint, where logs are retained, and how operators will access them.
How do I centralize CI/CD logs?
Use a collection path that captures logs where jobs run and delivers them to a common destination:
- Identify the sources. Decide whether you need pipeline console output, job and step context, controller health, agent infrastructure logs, or a combination. A pipeline log integration does not automatically mean every server log or job type is included.
- Choose the receiving system. Select a compatible observability backend and decide whether a collector will receive and forward telemetry. A collector is a common endpoint between CI workers and storage.
- Make the endpoint reachable. Jobs can emit logs from the Jenkins controller or from agents. Remote agents must be able to connect to the configured OTLP endpoint; a collector listening only on the controller’s localhost is not reachable from those agents without an appropriate network path or a collector deployed nearer to them.
- Forward the required signals. If a collector handles logs as well as traces and metrics, configure a logs pipeline. A collector configured only for traces and metrics will not forward logs.
- Set retention and access rules. Decide whether logs remain in the CI console, are mirrored to external storage, or are available only in the observability interface. Align retention and permissions with how teams investigate failures.
- Validate the path. Run representative builds, including noisy steps, then confirm that expected lines arrive and that users can move from a failed pipeline to its logs. Check endpoint access, collector and backend capacity, permissions, retention, and rejection or queue-overflow indicators.
Logs answer what a step printed. Traces and metrics add execution structure and health context, so forwarding all three can make a centralized view more useful than text search alone.
How can I monitor Jenkins pipeline logs in one place?
Install and configure the Jenkins OpenTelemetry plugin, then direct its telemetry to a reachable OTLP endpoint. That endpoint may be an OpenTelemetry Collector or a compatible observability backend; configure authentication if the receiving service requires it. The plugin is designed to send pipeline logs alongside traces and Jenkins health metrics.

The Jenkins pipeline log guide documents Elastic Observability and Loki storage procedures. The plugin documentation also names Jaeger, Zipkin, Prometheus, and other compatible backends for observability. Compatibility does not mean every backend offers the same log-storage and viewing workflow: check the instructions for the selected destination.
Choose where Jenkins logs are viewed
The access path depends on the storage option. The Jenkins guide describes Kibana visualization for Elastic, with choices that keep logs accessible in Jenkins or direct console users to Kibana. For Loki, it describes mirroring logs in Jenkins or viewing them exclusively in Grafana. Choose deliberately: an external-only setup changes where operators must go when investigating a failed build.

- Designed with console, 2 x usb, 4 x lan, vga, power switch, size at 290 x 180 x 44mm
- There are 2 inside reserved fans on chassis, which could be removed freely or be turned on in a high temperature environment to ensure the best function of the product
Account for controller and agent execution
Pipeline code may run on the controller or on agents. Confirm that every relevant execution environment can reach the endpoint and that its network and authentication settings work there. The plugin documentation recommends deploying OpenTelemetry Collectors next to Jenkins for improved scalability and reliability. A collector near the deployment can also provide a practical receiving point, but it still needs suitable connectivity and capacity to forward data onward.
Check what the integration covers
The Jenkins guide does not establish that every job type or Jenkins server log is covered by pipeline log export. Verify that the specific job types and log sources your team depends on are included before treating the plugin as a complete logging solution.

How do I send build logs to OpenTelemetry reliably?
Reliability depends on more than enabling an exporter. The route from the worker to the endpoint, the collector’s logs pipeline, queue capacity, and backend limits all affect whether records arrive.
Plan for bursts and queue limits
For the documented Elastic setup, the Jenkins plugin troubleshooting guide reports a default in-memory batch processor queue of 2,048 log records. A high-volume burst can fill that queue, after which records may be dropped. The guide suggests adjusting otel.blrp.max.queue.size as appropriate and ensuring that the collector and backend can handle the resulting throughput. Increasing a queue is not a substitute for sufficient downstream capacity.

- Portable 100M/1G Network TAP Appliance for remote capture of data traffic
- Integrated with a Raspberry Pi 4 module (8GB RAM and 64GB Micro SD Card)
- Can be used as a standalone 100M/1G network TAP with the external monitor port
- Dual DC power inputs for enhancing overall system availability
Watch event-size limits
The same troubleshooting guide cites a default maximum event size of 300 KiB for the Elastic APM Server configuration it discusses; an oversized individual record can be rejected. This is an Elastic-specific documented limit, not a universal OpenTelemetry or backend limit. Check the selected receiver’s current limits if build output can contain unusually large records.
Test the failure path
Use noisy and representative builds to check for missing lines, queue overflow, event-size rejections, endpoint reachability, and the time needed to find logs from a failed pipeline. Confirm that the collector has a logs pipeline and that the intended users can access the chosen view. These checks help expose gaps before operators depend on the centralized view during an incident.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsShould I use OpenTelemetry or managed CI visibility?
These options solve related but different operational problems. A self-managed OpenTelemetry route gives teams control over collection, storage, and access policy. A managed CI visibility feature may reduce the need to assemble that route, but its provider coverage and behavior must be checked for the CI system in use.
| Consideration | OpenTelemetry with Jenkins | Managed CI visibility |
|---|---|---|
| Operational ownership | Your team configures the plugin, endpoint or collector, backend, capacity, retention, and access. | The service documents a pipeline or job-log view; confirm what configuration and operational work remains for your provider. |
| Log access and retention | Choose Jenkins-local access, external-only viewing, or mirrored logs; set backend permissions and retention. | Confirm the service’s current log access, retention, and billing details for the relevant feature. |
| Pipeline context | The Jenkins plugin is designed to send pipeline logs alongside traces and Jenkins health metrics. | Datadog documents retrieving provider pipeline or job logs into a pipeline execution view; exact feature availability can vary by provider. |
| Provider coverage | Check that the plugin covers the Jenkins job types and log sources you need. | Check the provider categories and specific integration support in the Datadog CI Pipeline Visibility documentation. |
| Throughput and event size | Account for exporter queues, collector throughput, and backend limits; documented Elastic-specific limits are described above. | Verify the service’s current limits and feature details for your provider. |
Datadog is one documented managed example, not evidence that every CI provider or observability service retrieves logs in the same way. The appropriate choice depends on provider support, desired pipeline context, ownership preferences, and the access and retention policy your team needs.
