To remove the gradient quickly, turn off Nova: open about:config, find browser.nova.enabled, and set it to false. This disables the whole Nova redesign, not just the gradient. If you want to keep Nova, Firefox allows interface restyling with userChrome.css, but Mozilla does not guarantee that custom selectors will keep working across updates.
Turn off Nova to remove the gradient
- Enter
about:configin Firefox’s address bar and press Enter. - Accept the warning to continue to advanced preferences.
- Search for
browser.nova.enabled. - Change the preference to
false. If Firefox prompts you to restart, do so.
Mozilla Support documents this preference as a way to disable Nova. It removes the redesign as a whole, so it is the simplest choice if you do not want the new interface. Mozilla cautions that changing advanced preferences can cause unexpected behavior or breakage. Mozilla Support

Keep Nova and try a custom style
Firefox supports interface customization through a profile file named userChrome.css. You can use it to target interface elements, but Mozilla’s documentation does not provide a guaranteed, stable selector specifically for the titlebar gradient. A rule found online may not apply to your Firefox version or may stop working after an update.
- Open
about:config, search fortoolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets, and set it totrue. - Open your Firefox profile folder. Create a folder named
chromeinside it if one does not already exist. - Create or edit
userChrome.cssin that folder and add a CSS rule for the interface element you want to restyle. - Restart Firefox to load the stylesheet.
Mozilla notes: “Firefox is a work in progress and to allow for continuous innovation, Mozilla cannot guarantee that the styled elements will not change.” Mozilla’s userChrome.css guide explains the setup and its limitations.

Compare the available workarounds
| Approach | What changes | Maintenance and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
Set browser.nova.enabled to false |
Disables Nova, including the broader redesign. | Quickest documented option; advanced preference changes can cause unexpected behavior. |
Use userChrome.css |
Can restyle selected interface surfaces while keeping Nova. | Requires setup and CSS; selectors are not guaranteed to remain stable after updates. |
| Install a Proton-style theme | Changes the broader appearance toward Firefox’s previous look. | Easier than maintaining CSS, but not a selective fix for only the titlebar gradient. |
Use a theme for a broader visual fallback
Mozilla’s Add-ons Community Blog features a Firefox Proton theme for people who want the previous overall look. A theme changes more than the gradient, so it may not make only the titlebar or tab strip a solid color. Mozilla Add-ons Community Blog

Mozilla Bugzilla report 2076618 describes Firefox 157 on Windows as showing a horizontal gradient across the tab strip/titlebar, from grey on the left to a reddish tint on the right. The report also records that the default theme had no simple flat-color option when the issue was filed. Mozilla Bugzilla report 2076618
Rank #2
Mozilla’s Add-ons Community Blog dates Nova’s Firefox 157 release to September 29, 2026. The documented preference disables Nova; Mozilla’s official materials cited here do not establish a permanent, supported CSS selector that removes only the gradient.
