You can use AI with WordPress to draft and revise content in the block editor, test editorial tools, or connect an external AI agent to your site. For everyday writing, Jetpack AI offers the most direct editor-based workflow. Whichever route you choose, treat generated material as a draft: check its facts, links, tone, accessibility, and privacy implications before publishing.

Choose the right way to use AI with WordPress

There are three distinct approaches: an editor assistant for routine writing, the official WordPress AI plugin for evolving tools and experiments, or an agent connection for tasks that involve interacting with site data. Their access models and maturity differ, so choose based on the work you want to do rather than assuming they are interchangeable.

Option Best suited to Interface and tasks Important consideration
Jetpack AI Day-to-day writing and content transformations Works in the block editor and AI Hub; supports drafting, rewriting, translation, images, titles, summaries, lists, tables, and feedback. Check current request limits and plan pricing.
Official WordPress AI plugin Experiments, editorial notes, and developer workflows Offers content assistance and tools such as accessibility, readability, grammar, and SEO notes, along with abilities and classification controls. Features evolve and can vary by version; test on a staging site before relying on them in production.
WordPress.com MCP Connecting an external AI agent to WordPress for multi-step work An agent can read or act on site data according to the connection and plan. Review plan requirements and permissions; limit access and require confirmation before writes.

For a typical site owner who wants help composing and improving posts, start with Jetpack AI. Consider the official plugin when you specifically want to explore its editorial or developer-oriented tools, and MCP only when you have a defined agent task that justifies granting site access.

Use Jetpack AI in the WordPress editor

Jetpack AI brings assistance into the block-editor workflow. Jetpack says it can “draft, transform, translate, and alter your content.” Its product page currently advertises 20 free requests and a paid plan; limits and prices can change, so check the current Jetpack AI product page before choosing a plan.

  1. Install and connect Jetpack on your WordPress site.
  2. Open a post or page in the block editor.
  3. Invoke the AI Assistant from a block or the AI sidebar.
  4. Enter a specific instruction that identifies the audience, purpose, tone, length, factual constraints, and output format.
  5. Review the response in context, edit it, and verify it before publishing.

Jetpack documents help with drafting and transforming text, translation, lists, tables, titles, summaries, images, alt text, captions, and feedback. For a first attempt, use it to change material you already understand—for example, shorten a paragraph, make it more accessible to a general reader, propose headings, translate it, or turn your notes into a list. Comparing a transformation with the original makes it easier to spot changes in meaning.

Write prompts with useful constraints

A prompt such as “Write a blog post about backups” leaves the audience, scope, and factual basis unclear. A more useful instruction might be: “Turn these notes into a 150-word introduction for small-business WordPress site owners. Use a calm, plain-language tone. Do not add product recommendations or claims that are not in the notes. Return one paragraph.” Give the assistant source material when accuracy matters, and specify what it must not invent.

Use AI for SEO suggestions, not automatic answers

Jetpack’s settings documentation describes AI suggestions for titles, meta descriptions, and content. Treat each suggestion as a candidate, not a ranking guarantee or a verified description of the page. Check that the wording matches the searcher’s intent and the page itself; confirm names, claims, and links; and make sure the result remains clear and accessible. See Jetpack’s AI settings documentation for the available settings.

Test the official WordPress AI plugin carefully

The official WordPress AI plugin is an evolving project rather than a fixed set of features available identically on every site. The WordPress.org directory lists version 1.3.0, dated August 18, 2026, with slug generation, custom abilities, content-classification controls, site-health integration, and accessibility improvements. The WordPress.org plugin listing and the official WordPress/ai repository describe the project and its current development.

The repository describes Content Assistant and Editorial Notes for accessibility, readability, grammar, and SEO. Because project capabilities can change by release and workflow, install and evaluate the tools on a staging site first. Confirm that each feature behaves as your editorial process requires before using it on a live site.

Connect an AI agent only for a defined task

WordPress.com MCP provides a way to connect AI agents to WordPress. The documentation says self-hosted sites can use the same server through Jetpack, subject to the documented Jetpack AI or Jetpack Complete plan requirements. Check the current WordPress.com MCP documentation for setup and eligibility details.

An agent connection is different from asking for a paragraph in the editor: it can interact with site data according to the access granted. Decide exactly what the agent needs to do, grant the narrowest available permissions, and require confirmation before it makes changes. Do not grant broad publishing access simply to generate a draft.

Review AI-assisted content before publishing

AI can produce fluent text that still contains errors or changes the meaning of your source material. Make review a required step rather than relying on the output to be publishable as-is.

  • Verify facts: Check every specific claim against trustworthy source material, especially names, figures, dates, and instructions.
  • Check meaning and voice: Compare transformed text with the original, remove unsupported additions, and edit for your site’s tone and audience.
  • Inspect links and structure: Open links, confirm they support the claims they accompany, and review headings, lists, tables, and any structured data.
  • Review accessibility: Check heading order, descriptive link text, image alt text, and whether the content is understandable to its intended readers. An AI-generated alt description still needs human review.
  • Confirm image rights: Verify that you have permission to use generated or suggested images and that captions and credits are appropriate.
  • Consider privacy: Before sending text or site data to a third-party service, determine what information it receives and record which external service handled the content.

WordPress privacy guidance says plugin and service privacy standards should be visible, transparent, open, documented, and independently verifiable. It also calls for explaining data shared with third parties and the use of scripts, pixels, cookies, and iframes. Review the WordPress Plugin Handbook privacy guidance alongside the privacy terms of any service you connect.

How to compare WordPress AI options

Before installing a plugin or connecting an agent, compare the practical details that affect your workflow and risk:

  • Editor integration: Does the tool work where you write, or require a separate agent or interface?
  • Tasks supported: Does it handle the specific work you need, such as rewriting, translation, editorial feedback, or site actions?
  • Approval controls: Can you review suggestions before they change published content?
  • Privacy and data handling: What content or site data is sent to an external service, and where are its policies documented?
  • Limits and plans: What request quotas, subscription requirements, or eligibility conditions apply now?
  • Permissions: For an agent connection, can access be restricted to only the task and data required?
