Design the application to recover from interrupted work, use probes for the right purpose, spread workloads across the failure domains your cluster actually has, protect planned maintenance with an appropriately sized PodDisruptionBudget, and connect application telemetry to cluster signals.
Start with the failures the system must survive
Fault tolerance is a system property: Kubernetes can detect some unhealthy containers, change which Pods receive Service traffic, and help preserve capacity during certain maintenance operations, but it cannot make every dependency, data operation, network path, or control-plane component resilient by itself.
Begin by identifying the failures that matter to the service: a process crash or hang, a dependency outage, node or zone loss, a voluntary node drain, or a problematic release. For each, decide whether the right response is to restart an instance, stop sending it new traffic, recover application state, or fail the request safely. A passing health check is not proof that a complete user transaction will succeed.
Kubernetes distinguishes involuntary disruptions, such as hardware failure or a network partition, from voluntary actions such as draining a node or changing a workload. Resource requests, replicated workloads, and placement across racks or zones can reduce the impact of some failures; none removes the need to design the application’s own recovery behavior. See the Kubernetes disruption guide.

Give each probe one job
Kubernetes supports HTTP, TCP, command, and gRPC probe mechanisms. Choose a check that reflects the question being asked, and keep liveness checks especially narrow: an overloaded process that is still making progress may recover if given time, while restarting it can shift more work onto already strained replicas.
| Probe | What it answers | What happens on failure | Design use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Startup | Has initialization finished? | Until startup succeeds, Kubernetes does not run the configured liveness and readiness probes. | Use for applications whose startup takes longer than ordinary health checks allow. |
| Readiness | Can this instance accept traffic now? | A failed check removes the Pod IP from the EndpointSlices for matching Services, so it stops receiving their normal traffic. | Reflect whether routing a request to this instance is appropriate under the application’s health contract. |
| Liveness | Is restarting this container a reasonable recovery action? | Repeated failures can cause Kubernetes to restart the container. | Use for conditions where restart can help, not as a broad test of every dependency. |
A dependency failure that affects every replica is usually not repaired by restarting every container. If liveness treats that outage as local process failure, a restart wave can add load and worsen the incident. Readiness may account for a required dependency when an instance unable to use it would return errors, but the right contract depends on the service. Kubernetes explains probe behavior and configuration in its probe documentation.
Replicate across real failure domains
Multiple replicas help only to the extent that they do not share the failure being addressed. Replicas placed on one node remain exposed to node loss; replicas placed in one zone remain exposed to a zone-level event. Use available node labels and topology spread constraints to guide placement across nodes or zones, and verify that the cluster’s actual topology and capacity make the intended spread possible.

For higher-level availability, account for control-plane topology as well as application Pods. Kubernetes’ multi-zone guidance discusses distributing control-plane components across zones and notes that infrastructure setup matters. API server endpoints are not made cross-zone resilient automatically. Networking and storage behavior also depend on provider and configuration; confirm those properties rather than assuming that application replica placement covers them.

Select them based on the service’s required capacity, failure boundaries, storage behavior, and environment. A Deployment with three replicas, for example, is not by itself evidence of any particular availability target.
Use a PodDisruptionBudget for the maintenance it covers
A PodDisruptionBudget (PDB) expresses how many replicas may be unavailable simultaneously during voluntary disruptions that respect the eviction mechanism. Kubernetes summarizes its purpose as: “A PDB limits the number of Pods of a replicated application that are down simultaneously from voluntary disruptions.” See the official disruption documentation.

Choose a budget from the application’s serving-capacity or quorum requirement. A quorum-based service needs enough members to retain quorum; a front end needs enough serving instances for its required capacity. Check that the cluster administrator or hosting provider uses eviction operations that honor PDBs.
- A PDB cannot prevent involuntary failures such as a node or hardware outage.
- Direct deletion of Pods or Deployments can bypass the eviction mechanism and therefore the PDB.
- Rolling-update behavior is configured on the workload controller; a PDB does not constrain it in the same way it constrains eviction.
- An overly strict budget can block maintenance, while a permissive one can allow more voluntary disruption than the application can tolerate.
Make termination and restart safe for the application
When an instance terminates, it should stop accepting new work and handle in-flight work according to the application protocol: finish it, or abandon it safely so it can be recovered. Persist state that must survive a restart. This matters for stateful services and background workers as well as request-serving processes.

A lifecycle hook such as PreStop can support orderly shutdown, but a hook is not a substitute for application components that can recover from restarts. The Cloud Native Computing Foundation’s design guidance puts the requirement plainly: “The components in your application have to be able to handle restarts.”

Work out what a restart means for the service contract: whether unfinished work can be retried safely, whether state has been persisted, and whether a partially completed operation needs recovery or compensation. Those choices depend on the application; Kubernetes does not supply universal retry, timeout, idempotency, or consistency settings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Connect application signals to cluster signals
Collect metrics, logs, and traces so an operator can relate a user-visible failure to service behavior and infrastructure conditions. Use structured logs for searchability and preserve request correlation identifiers across service boundaries. Kubernetes describes these core signals and common collection patterns in its observability documentation; the CNCF also discusses structured logging and correlation IDs in its application design guidance.
The Kubernetes Metrics API is intended for resource usage and basic inspection, not as a replacement for a full monitoring pipeline. Plan application and cluster telemetry together, including how long signals are retained and how operators will trace an incident across service boundaries.

Review the architecture against the failure it claims to tolerate
Before treating a design as fault tolerant, evaluate each deployment choice against these questions:
- Failure-domain coverage: Does it address process, node, zone, region, or control-plane failures—and which remain outside its scope?
- Traffic behavior: How does the system stop routing to an unhealthy instance and return a recovered instance to service?
- Maintenance behavior: Do drains and upgrades preserve the serving capacity or quorum the application needs?
- State and recovery: Can interrupted work be retried safely, persisted, or compensated?
- Operational complexity: What additional replicas, zones, telemetry retention, and managed-service responsibilities are required?
- Provider dependence: Which assumptions rely on the provider’s load balancing, storage topology, networking, control-plane availability, or eviction behavior?
These checks keep a Kubernetes mechanism from being mistaken for an end-to-end guarantee. The final design must match the service contract and the failure domains the chosen cluster and infrastructure can actually withstand.
