Yes—but ASIC and SoC describe different things, and a chip can be both. ASIC refers to a circuit customized for a specific function; SoC refers to a system’s important components integrated onto one chip. One label is about purpose, the other about integration.

What does ASIC mean?

ASIC stands for application-specific integrated circuit. It describes a circuit designed or manufactured to perform a particular function, rather than a general-purpose chip intended for many unrelated uses. The NIST glossary, attributing its definition to CNSSI 4009-2022 and adapting it from Encyclopedia Britannica, defines an ASIC as “a digital or analog circuit, custom-designed and/or custom-manufactured to perform a specific function.”

ASICs can be digital or analog and are used across different fields and products. The term alone does not specify the circuit’s size, performance, price, or exact internal components.

What does SoC mean?

SoC stands for system on a chip. It describes integration: many of the important elements of a system that might otherwise be spread across multiple chips are combined into one integrated circuit. Analog Devices defines an SoC in terms of integrating most of a system’s elements on one IC.

A typical embedded SoC may combine processing, peripherals and interfaces, and other system functions. Depending on the chip, it may also include memory or memory interfaces, clock and reset control, communications, and security features. The exact combination varies; no single component list is required for every SoC. Microchip’s overview describes the embedded-system context.

How ASICs and SoCs overlap

The labels are not opposites. An SoC built for a specific application can also qualify as an ASIC: it integrates a system and is customized for a defined purpose. Conversely, “SoC” does not by itself tell you whether every part of the chip is custom, or how much can be reconfigured after manufacture. A Pearson-hosted technical chapter discusses the ambiguity between SoCs and traditional ASICs.

Term What it emphasizes Practical interpretation
ASIC Purpose and customization A circuit designed or manufactured for a specific function; NIST describes ASICs as non-reconfigurable.
SoC Integration Many system elements are combined on one integrated circuit.
SoC FPGA System integration plus programmable logic A device combines a processor or system component with FPGA fabric that can be configured as hardware logic.

These descriptions can apply to the same chip. An SoC may be application-specific, while an ASIC may integrate enough components to function as a system on a chip.

What is an SoC FPGA?

An SoC FPGA is a more specific category, not a synonym for every SoC. It combines an embedded processor or system component with FPGA fabric. Software runs on the processor, while the fabric provides configurable hardware logic. Microchip’s SoC FPGA description covers this combination. Intel’s versioned SoC FPGA documentation also explains the processor-and-programmable-logic approach.

That configurable fabric differs from a conventional fixed ASIC implementation: FPGA logic can be reconfigured, while a fixed ASIC’s implemented circuit is not reconfigured in the same way. The distinction is about programmability, not whether a device can be called an SoC.

How to compare two actual chips

The labels are useful for orientation, but not enough to choose between products. Compare the implementations themselves:

  1. Integrated functions: Identify the processors, interfaces, peripherals, memory arrangements, and other blocks each chip actually includes.
  2. Application-specific design: Determine which functions are customized for the intended product or workload.
  3. Reconfiguration: Check which parts, if any, can be changed after manufacture, and whether that means software changes, programmable logic, or neither.
  4. External requirements: Establish what companion chips, external memory, or interfaces the design still needs.
  5. Documented tradeoffs: Compare the specific chips’ power, performance, area, cost, and development requirements using product-level specifications or measurements.

ASIC and SoC are category labels, not performance rankings. The definitions establish neither that ASICs are always faster or cheaper nor that SoCs always use less power or require fewer components. Those outcomes depend on the particular designs and their implementation.

Which term should you use?

  • Use ASIC when the point is that a circuit is customized for a defined function.
  • Use SoC when the point is that important system elements are integrated on one chip.
  • Use SoC FPGA when the device specifically combines system or processor functions with FPGA fabric.

If a chip fits more than one description, use both terms and explain the relevant feature—for example, an application-specific SoC or an SoC FPGA. That is more informative than treating ASIC and SoC as mutually exclusive choices.
